I couldn’t put it down! This is a wonderful story full of great characters, love, duty, honor and strife! Phoebe and her brother Roger grew up with Evan and Owen, as their fathers are business partners and best friends. Although she was always closer to Owen, she has been betrothed to the older brother Evan since she was a child. Evan is a captain and merchant, and is often away. In this time, Phoebe and Owen grow to love one another more, as they are more alike and share more interests. But duty and honor goes before love, at least for Phoebe. Tragedy strikes, hearts are broken, but can true love survive?
This is the story of Owen & Phoebe. The side character is Evan. What a love triangle this story is. They all grew up together. Both of them are in love with Phoebe. Who will get the girl? This is a very intriguing story. Phoebe is always so ready to please people, especially her father, even to sacrifice her life and not be with the love of her life. She goes back and forth from one to the other, due to circumstances beyond her control. The way this story is told is very frustrating at times, in a good way for the reader. This is a page-turner for sure. So well written and easy-to-follow with everything going on. Looking forward to Olivia Bennet’s next book.
I was disappointed that Phoebe accepted her fate so easily without a fight for love. Her brother Roger acted like he had a stick up his butt and he knew nothing about love- ugh! My heart ached for Owen! Owen’s mother was a total beast to everyone especially family! What a horrid creature. She needed to be put down like a sick animal. I can’t! It felt like those that mattered constantly lied to themselves and their hearts! Martyr much? I couldn’t believe Phoebe’s own father turned on her at a crucial time! Major surprise that looks like the last nail in the coffin turns out to be a secret blessing in disguise. I loved the philanthropic aspect.
“An Immoral Dilemma for the Scandalous Lady” earns 5/5 Scandalous Loves…Engaging and Endearing Page-Turner!
Although I am more a fan of a little cozy murder mystery, I have recently become interested in the historical romance genre. I am a fan of Olivia Bennet’s books that whisk me away to a long ago age of the British aristocracy with ladies in full-length gowns and lords in waistcoats, where arranged marriages are common place and people live in a severely defined class and gender structure. Phoebe, the only daughter of the widower Earl of Wycliff, knows and accepted at an early age that her father pledged her in marriage to the eldest son of the Duke of Bentley. Evan, himself the Marquess of Huxley, is handsome with an active role in his father’s shipping business, but he, too, knows what’s expected of him. However, even at an early age Phoebe felt more of a connection with Evan’s younger brother Owen, and with Evan’s absent the past few years transporting goods across the ocean, the relationship between Phoebe and Owen blossoms, deepens, and threatens their happy existence. But, choosing love and happiness over duty and obligation is unheard of in the nineteenth century…will destiny intervene? An epic delight with a scandal that would barely bat a contemporary eye and depicted well with Olivia’s writing style, descriptive language, and dialogue that illustrates well the era along with the various personalities. The story is listed as a steamy historical regency romance, but I hardly blushed…well, hardly. Heads up…when you get to Chapter 31, savor the heartwarming words Evan recites to Phoebe. Thank you, Olivia, I almost cried. The novel truly concludes with an Extended Epilogue that allows readers to find a satisfying closure. My only query…if I was the author and planned to name a character after me, why the governess and not…the queen?
They will overcome heartache, tragedy, and seemingly insurmountable odds to find a love that lasts a lifetime. This story has twists and turns you don’t seeming until the end. Well worth your time!!
The lives and loves of four young children, two families, three boys and one girl. Their fathers decide at their young age to betroth the daughter of one to the eldest of the other. But as time went on the young girl grew to be a beautiful young lady and fell in love with her betroth’s younger brother. Complications, duty, loyalty, love plagued the young lady. I liked the characters because they were real and down-to-earth. The overall story of torn between two brothers is overwhelming emotional journey. I just had one reservation. The young lady’s devotion to three people trying to love them all with equal respect was an impossible expectation and some were put through deep pain. Could she have been so perfect to always choose loyalty and duty over love? It seemed that way in the book and felt unrealistic. Other than that, I enjoyed reading this book. It was entertaining and never boring.
