Radu and his brother, Pavel, are hunting in the forest when they encounter a monster. Pavel is killed and Radu returns home. But, something is very wrong and his family, community and friends soon turn against him. His mother warns him that the local priest has been asked to get rid of him because he is now a monster.
I enjoyed this short book a lot. It reminded me of the original “Dracula”, with the awakening of Radu as a vampire. I am a longtime fan of the vampire genre and it is nice to find a book that returns to the roots of the original tale (instead of sparkles!). At first, Radu descends into madness, wandering the forests hunting for life-giving blood. After many years, he decides to return to his home and see if he can become part of civilization again.
The author does a wonderful job in telling this tale from Radu’s POV. You can feel his emotions throughout his journey and her descriptions of his change are superb. The narrator was absolutely perfect for this book and his pacing and voices really made a good book even better. I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook by the author/publisher/narrator and chose to review it.
An End in Ice, my fifth read from author Rachel Ford. This short book is so well-written & enjoyable. Bram Stoker and Anne Rice would be proud that their genre is in good hands. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reading & reviewing it. Joshua Quillin’s talented narration adds greatly to the book’s enjoyment. “I received a free review copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.” (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
Rachel has done it again, she has packed a hell of a lot of life in a very short story. I totally loved this novel, even if I had to follow the storyline really close in order not to miss anything. The characters were very well written and the feelings involved get passed on to you as you read. I look forward to her next one as I have followed her work for well over two years. I hope you pick it up, you won’t regret it.
I received this novel; for free and this is my honest opinion.
An End in Ice
An interesting vampire story with a twist
I was given this audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
I enjoyed listening to this book and following the characters transition and thoughts. The story is well written and draws you in. The narrator did a wonderful job. I would recommend reading or listening to this book. (I received this audible book free and am leaving a voluntary honest review)
I am always thrilled when someone can come up with a fresh perspective on a vampire tale instead of rehashing what’s already out there. I found this character’s tale very interesting. An excellent work. I received a free review copy of this audio book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This review is for the Audible only. I did borrow the book but I was unable to get it to sync with the Audible. Audible and Narrator 4 Stars. This was an interesting book and fun to listen to late at night. I wanted to “read” this book because I loved the subject matter: Vampires! Love them since I first learned of them from “Dark Shadows” and Barnabas.
The story is about two brothers, Radu and Pavel, out hunting for deer in the forest of Romania. Radu hits a stag with his arrow but misses the mark and it doesn’t kill the stag immediately. Instead, the stag takes off and Radu starts to follow the stag. Pavel wants to go home because it is getting late and they could get injured by the stag but Radu refuses and starts tracking the stag. Pavel, being the older and more responsible brother, follows Radu in case he is needed.
After sometime, they track the injured stag to a clearing and when Radu enters the clearing to check on his stag, a strange creature appears and attacks him. Pavel tries to rescue Radu but he ends up becoming the creatures next victim. Pavel gets killed and the rest of the book deals with the guilt Radu feels and the villagers reaction to what transpired on the hunt.
It is interesting to see the different reactions from the various people in Radu’s life to the ramifications of the encounter between the brothers and the strange creature, a vampire.

I got this audible book free to review.
I don’t normally listen to audible, usually letting my Fire read to me, but I really enjoyed this.
The story is told first person, by Radu, who gets into trouble on a hunting trip. It shows how he struggles to keep his humanity through the effects of his attack.
The narrator tells the story well, and the story keeps you listening even when you should be doing something else.
Great story
TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE THE UNDEAD
A narration of the beginnings of a vampire and how he fought to not become a monster. The book was almost a rambling string of events. It wasn’t captivating and could have been a bit more interesting.
I received this book for free and am giving my honest and voluntary review.
This is a really quick read. It feels like a prequel/origin story to a series the author’s writing style is different from styles I am used to. This isn’t a bad thing, the writing feels old and fits the story well. The author has a very extensive vocabulary so be prepared to learn a few new words. I have a massive vocabulary and still found a word or two I did not know. This story takes place in the 1400s. Radu and his brother are out hunting and get attacked by a monster. Radu’s brother is killed but he survives after being injured. The people in his village become convinced he is evil and Radu flees for his life. The story does have an ending so there is no cliffhanger. I am currently reading another book by this author and the writing style is the same so be prepared to get hooked on Rachel Ford.

Not normally a book I would read, I am glad I did! I love the writing style used. in this book. Antiquated words but simple enough to understand. The story was compelling. Radu was a very likable character in spite of his circumstances. A great short read!

An easy read with some tragedy thrown in. The confusion and angst he had in the beginning was realistic and understandable. Having to learn through trial and error about his new abilities and learn to live with himself about who he had become is relatable. Time has a way of getting away from you and his did, by a long shot.
**** SPOILER ALERT ****
Ford packs an immense amount of world building and character development into a, very, small package as she tells us about Radu’s transformation into a monster. Ford allows the reader to see that although Radu has become a monster, he has not become an evil monster. What does the future hold for Radu? Ford alone knows, hopefully she will let us readers in on the story as time goes by.
In the interest of transparency: I was given a free review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review. It is my own honest opinion.
An intriguing, family-friendly (but not for the littlest ones) tale to while away a rainy October afternoon, it recounts what happened to Radu and his brother Petru in the woods near their home in Vale in 1425.
