From the beloved #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Sookie Stackhouse series, the inspiration for HBO’s True Blood, comes “a gripping, twisty-turny, thrill ride of a read” (Karin Slaughter, New York Times bestselling author) following a young gunslinging mercenary on deadly mission through the American Southwest. In a fractured United States, a new world where magic is acknowledged but … States, a new world where magic is acknowledged but mistrusted, a young gunslinger named Lizbeth Rose takes a job offer from a pair of Russian wizards. Lizbeth Rose has a wildly fearsome reputation but these wizards are desperate. Searching the small border towns near Mexico, they’re trying to locate a low-level magic practitioner believed to be a direct descendant of Grigori Rasputin.
As the trio journey through an altered America–shattered into several countries after the assassination of Franklin Roosevelt and the Great Depression–they’re set on by enemies. It’s clear that a powerful force does not want them to succeed in their mission. Lizbeth Rose has never failed a client, but this job may stretch her to her deadly limits.
“Immersive, involving, suspenseful and intriguing, with a main character you’ll love” (Lee Child, #1 New York Times bestselling author), An Easy Death is a fast-paced thriller of the highest order.

I am in awe of Charlaine Harris’s talent; she has imagined an alternate U.S., different from any other I know of and populated it with her usual unusual variety of unexpected people. “Gunnie” Lizbeth Rose, a gun-toting person hired to protect travelers, is a fully realized character who quickly won my sympathies. She is vulnerable and determined, strong and honorable in a dangerous profession. We get to know her well over the course of the story but I am very much looking forward to seeing new aspects uncovered in the next book(s)!
I hope she’ll write more about Gunnie Rose.
This book was just okay. I found it difficult to become vested in the protagonist, and I found the plot line stereotypical for this genre. I had hoped for more.
I am a BIG Charlaine Harris fan! I was so excited when I saw she had a new character series coming out, I ordered in advance!! My only regret: it was such a page turner that the experience was over too quickly! I really like the alternate reality she has created and I am looking forward to the continuation of the series.
Charlaine’s done it again. It took me a chapter or so to get with the parlance and initial change of pacing – but then… I can’t wait for the next book.
Why is a teenage killer someone to encourage?
Charlaine Harris does a great job of world building again! At first I was wondering where she was going because some of the dialogue was odd, but soon I was immersed in Lizbeth’s world and never looked back..I’m looking forward to more!
As far as I know Charlaine Harris hasn’t ever written a bad book, and this one is right up there with her best. New world, new main heroine. It is an alternate America where FDR was assassinated right at the beginning of his term (but the depression still happens without him to bail us out) and the US has split up into several nations. Lizbeth, our main character, is a gunny and hires out mostly as a guard. Can’t tell much else without going into spoilers, but the majority of the book is about her shepherding two wizards from the Holy Russian Empire (the Romanovs escaped the Bolsheviks and settled in San Diego) through Texoma, down to Juarez in Mexico. Every page is full of great things, and it is hard to put down. If you like Ms Harris, you need to read this book.
I enjoyed this latest endeavor by Charlaine Harris. A few gun/weapon discrepancies and a little too much killing for me. Would have liked a bit more discription/details regarding her “world”, but overall a good read.
This book was amazing and the most original story I’ve seen in years. It’s part alternate history, part fantasy, part gunslinger, and has a wonderfully strong and realistic female lead. Lisbeth Rose, who tells her own story in the first person, is a “gunnie.” In this version of the 1940’s, a “gunnie” is a bodyguard who protects groups who are traveling through the dangerous country. She has an arsenal of guns and rifles, and she’s very, very good at what she does. Charlaine Harris tells the story in Lisbeth’s voice, and we learn a lot about her and her world pretty quickly. I love the magic that is also seamlessly woven into it. I won’t spend time here summarizing the story, but will say there’s never a dull moment. I love Lisbeth Rose, and I hope this first outing is the beginning of many adventures for her. I’m happy to tell you that this is a whole story, with a real ending where everything is wrapped up satisfactorily. No cliffhanger here; Charlaine Harris is too good and too much of a professional for that . She respects her readers enough to give us an honest and very real heroine with flaws and skills, and she doesn’t need a cliffhanger or any tricks to keep her readers coming back for more. And so I say, “More, please!” Easily all the stars there are!
C Harris is just a great writer who knows how to build worlds and characters that just grab you. I can only wish you all- “An Easy Death”
