First off, it was so great that she did a story about Lord Ancrum! After his last appearance it was good to have him return and redeem himself. I loved his character, he wanted to redeem himself but he also wanted to be of benefit to his friends. Really enjoyed how this story played out! Great Job, Ms. Alec!

I thoroughly enjoyed this heart stopping mystery within the recency time period. Plenty of romance, mystery, criminals, justice, gossip, sparks, and more. Lovable characters bring the story to life. I highly recommend this book and author! Happy reading!

Lydia Whitaker always disappears into the shadows at society functions she finds it peaceful and she gets to avoid her mother who does nothing but tells her she will never marry and treat her almost as a maid. She plans a change she has always followed all rules careful not to create a scandal, but now she is going to bolder in her appearance and her personality this is her third season she needs to marry or she will be forced to care for her uncaring parents for the rest of their lives. Joseph the Earl of Ancrum is looking to repair his reputation so that he might find a wife from a good family, he hears a lady say his name the lady is a young widow known to free with her favors, Lady Starling seems to want Joseph to be her new plaything and lets him become very aware of her offer. Joseph is flattered by this until a friend reminds him it will only confirm that he is a rake and he will not find a wife this way. He is introduced to Lydia and they have a dance Lydia is glad she has put herself forward because she has finally met a nice gentleman even though she knows of his problem she gives him a chance to prove himself. Joseph is summoned to Lady Starlings’ aid and becomes embroiled in what he believes is a blackmail attempt on the lady by Lord Paulson who also starts to hang around Lydia she is not sure if she likes him or not but is glad to meet more people when Joseph tells her to stay away from him things become a little distance between them. When he takes Lady Starling to an event at Lord Paulson’s home he is surprised to find Lydia there with her mother. As planned he leaves the room and begins searching for evidence against his host, Lydia came upon him after hearing a loud noise only to see a dead body on the floor. Joseph begs her to believe he had not done this before she can decide her mother burst upon them not seeing the body yet what will happen now is rather surprising. I love her books they always have a mystery to solve and woman who are braver than they knew.

The Earl of Ancrum was a villain when he tried to ruin Miss Ophelia Grey in The Aristocrat’s Charade to win a bet. He is trying to fix his reputation when he takes up with Lady Starling, a woman who is free with her favors. He knocks Lydia Whitaker down in his haste to do Lady Starling’s bidding. Lydia and the earl end up in a compromising position and he is forced to propose to her, which angers Lady Starling. Lydia’s parents are atrocious, putting her down and using her as a servant. There is blackmail and murder in the Regency romantic suspense.
Lord Ancrum (Joseph) made an embarrassing fool of himself the previous Season due to a drunken wager; now he wants to repair his reputation and perhaps find a wife. Lady Starling immediately sought him out at the ball. She was known for enjoying her male playtoys and, since the ton considered Lord Ancrum a rake, she expected no resistance to her flirting. Lord Irwin, Joseph’s friend, came over when she left and warned him that to clear his reputation, he would be smarter not to get involved with her and to instead look for a wife as he mentioned. What father would give his daughter to a known rake anyway?
Lady Lydia Whitaker is a quiet young wallflower who prefers keeping in the shadows where no one will see her, hiding in her sanctuary where her mother can’t find her. This is her third Season and her mother has not ever tried to introduce her to anyone, leaving her on her own. Her parents have been abysmal in their treatment of her and have beaten her spirit down. Realizing she is approaching spinsterhood if nothing changes, she decides to make this Season different, to speak to the other ladies and to the gentlemen, and to dance. She will dress in her most flirtatious gown and will have her hair styled perfectly. She will be completely transformed tonight!
When Lord Ancrum and Lady Lydia meet, being introduced by Lord Irwin’s wife, he is delighted that, although she had been present at his embarrassment last Season, she didn’t turn away from him or reject him. She accepted his offer to dance. Two days later, Lydia had been more than happy to accept Lady Irwin’s invitation to afternoon tea. But as she walked to Lady Irwin’s home, a man raced in her direction and knocked her over, continuing to run past. Another man hurried over and helped her up, introduced as Lord Paulson, then insisted he walk with her to Lady Irwin. The other man went straight to Lady Starling after receiving a note from her of an emergency he had to attend to. Lord Ancrum had not stopped to help the woman he ran into because he believed the emergency sounded severe. Yet the butler was calm and knew of no such problem? Lady Starling herself told him the vile Lord Paulson had insisted on seeing her to blackmail her and she knew Lord Ancrum would protect her! What is going on? Is Lady Starling setting him up for another scandal when he didn’t accept her invitation to become “close friends”? Will her actions pull him into another scandal before he has scarcely cleared his reputation?
The following evening, Lydia and Joseph met again at a dinner party. He seemed distracted and when he realized his rudeness, he touched her arm and she winced in pain. As she told him what happened to her and his face reflected his horror, they realized he was the one who knocked her over. In responding to what he thought was an emergency and seeing another man help her up, he ran on. He apologized and wanted to prove himself to her. So she blatantly asked him to help her be introduced to society and show her some attention in public. He agreed to call on her and they could walk in the park together. She also realized he would be very easy to love if she didn’t take care.
The two of them easily spoke the truth to each other and got to know the other’s reliability. She had overheard him defend her strongly to her father. And telling him he had no such obligation as he promised, he replied that he would see her happy, and he felt the words come straight from his heart. He hadn’t even noticed that they had been holding each other’s hands.
At another ball, Lydia pointed out Lord Paulson to Joseph. His change in attitude upset her. When he later told her to stay away from Lord Paulson, she was angry to be ordered about like that. Lady Starling is likewise still asking Lord Ancrum to help her find “dirt” on Lord Paulson which, if he were caught rummaging in his belongings, would clearly ruin Lord Ancrum’s reputation permanently! He found nothing in the study. But when he entered the dark Library, Lord Paulson was dead on the floor! And as Joseph made a choking sound and backed out of the room, Lydia was in the doorway and saw the body. She knocked into a door in her haste to get away, and her mother was there, accusing her of impropriety being alone with Lord Ancrum – so he spoke up to tell her he had just proposed to her daughter and was waiting for her answer!
This clearly was going to be a difficult path for Lydia and Joseph to get together as they will have much to overcome in the form of manipulation, misunderstanding, lies, deceit, and accusations. Was the death an accident? Is the real killer still free? If they can survive a scandal, is there still a chance for them to find happiness together? Or will they let others destroy what they have found in each other?
This was a wonderful book with a good story line and memorable characters. There is so much going on that the reader isn’t sure where the biggest danger is coming from! How will Joseph ever get out of this difficulty? Grab your copy and try to unravel the tangle of lies and deceit!
In this book we find Lord Ancrum (Joseph) trying to fix his reputation for kissing a young lady in an effort to win a bet. And then there is Lydia who realizes her mother doesn’t want her to marry because Lydia is virtually her slave. She begins to understand that the only way for things to change is for her to do it herself. Lydia is a smart girl, Joseph not so much and I don’t know what she finds so redeeming about him, but that is the story. For me, his constantly foolish behavior detracted from my enjoyment of the story. And neither one of them have any friends? None? There are some great twists in the story, I just wish I could have liked the characters more.

A book in the Brides of London series, a well written story that held my interest until the end. Lord Joseph Ancrum made a fool of himself last season and is hoping he is forgiven this new season. He meets Lydia Whitaker and they become betrothed. They will have a lot to overcome with a murder, a woman who is not very nice, lies, and romance. A story I enjoyed reading. A wonderful villain.
When reading this story the first thing you will notice is that Lord Ancrum is a fool and totally clueless. Lydia, on the other hand, needs to distance herself from her parents because they are worse than Lord Ancrum. There is a really wonderful villain in this piece truly evil loved the character. It is not a short book, but just the right length to tell this rather interesting story. I liked the book I would recommend it. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
