Interview with the Author
Q – So, what makes The Chronicles of Hawthorn series special?
A – It’s actually a mix of things. When I chose to write these books, I wanted to create a diverse story that reminded me of the kind of fantasy, magic, and advenure books I like to read. My top picks are usually epic fantasy novels, any of the witch and wizard best sellers, and, of course, books featuring magic, spells, and potions with a dash of humor. Basically, anything with a fantasy genre flavor and a fast-paced style gets my click.
The Chronicles of Hawthorn books are a great mix of these genres. You’ll find the series focuses on the magic and adventure / young adult fantasy genre overall, with a pinch of historical fiction thrown in for good measure, and an adventurous take on magic and friendships to keep things interesting!
Overall, The Chronicles of Hawthorn series is designed with short, punchy chapters to keep you turning the pages – and I’ve made sure you’ll want to know what happens next.
Q – What order should I read the books in?
A – If you want to read them in order and follow the Flynn’s story as it builds, I’d suggest the following sequence:
– The Courage of Kahu (Series Prequel, novella)
– An Average Curse (Book 1)
– Key to the Journey (Book 2)
– The Shadow Calls (Book 3)
– Taken by the Shadow (Book 4)
– The Prisoner of Light (Book 5)
– Secrets of Kabara (Book 6, February 2018)
– Daughter of Shadow (Book 7, May 2018)
Q – So, why should readers give these books a try?
A – Because The Chronicles of Hawthorn series is a historical fantasy series that features adventure, female characters and nature based magic! Book one hit the top 100 bestsellers list on Kindle for Teen & Young Adult > Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Wizards & Witches, and Taken by the Shadow was nominated for Cover of the Month on All Authors.
At the end of the day, readers who enjoy historical fantasy with a plot that features two best friends and a rich cast of supporting characters will get a fantastic adventure out of this series.
Q – Can readers get the whole series in one bundle?
A – Of course. I put together a bundle for readers who would like to read the entire series and save a little cash, too. Check out my author page here at Amazon for more details, and a full list of my available titles.

I felt this book was so interesting and had such a special place for anyone who has a ride or die friend. I loved that this was a fantasy novel that had very relatable relationships and brought about real emotion. My heart broke for Flynn’s feeling of inadequacy and disappointment to her mother. I think everyone can relate to the feeling of not being good enough and it is even more disheartening when you feel you have let your parents down, the people who are supposed to love you no matter what. Even though there were feelings of sadness, the bond between Flynn and her best friend Hazel, was something magical. It made the story come together and brought about hope. I look forward to seeing how these kids grow into themselves and find their meaning in life.
Flynn Hawthorn is the ninth daughter of the ninth daughter. This means she should have special powers that will allow her to beome the High Priestess, as her mother currently is. Her destiny is to reunite the separated portions of The Book of Shadow and Light. However, while most around her have magical powers, Flynn, thus far, has displayed none.
The characters are delightful – Hazel, her best friend and protector; sweet Po, the charming carver; spiteful Tamsin; fairy-like Zip; hateful Lania, and more.
Take a trip with Flynn and Hazel through the Magical Dreamwood Forest, into the House of Magikal Items, toil in the Herb Hut. Flynn feels like such a disappointment to her mother and her people. But there are others who have faith in her. Can she live up to their belief in her? Not all is as it seems. There are those who want her dead.
A magical, suspenseful story. Perfect for middle-school ages. A light read for adults.
I really liked this book ! I would suggest those who read this review start with its prequel The Courage of Kahu to set the tone of this book and those that follow it.
Flynn is Kahu’s daughter and hasn’t shown any
magical abilities in 14 years. Everyone looks upon her as a failure but her best friend Hazel and together they get ready to take their initiate tests to see if they can climb up 9 levels to become full witches. The girls have some interesting adventures along the way and become friends with a boy (Po) who aids them along the way and together the three “young lings” battle the evil Shadow Witch toward the end of the book.
It’s a great story of the power of love and friendship that binds these three and makes me look forward to the next book and so forth through the series to see how much they mature. Flynn starts to see some hidden latent powers begin to assert themselves which really surprises her because she had always thought she was a “watcher” (one with no magically powers).
If you like routing for the underdog this is a great book to read. It shows we need to go within ourselves and believe in ourselves to bring about the things we desperately want.
I think if you start this adventure with me you’ll be captivated by the spell Rue casts and will follow the stories to the final book and shed a tear or two that the story of your friends has come to an end.
