Ruined through her vile brother’s schemes, Eleanor Chivenham is offered rescue by marriage to a rake with an infamous French mistress. Eleanor accepts, determined to treat the arranged marriage with cool dignity.
Then she meets Nicholas Delaney. Not only does he stir her senses, but the trouble and pain beneath his smooth exterior reaches her heart.
Nicholas is indeed troubled. While serving … While serving his country by seducing secrets out of a French spy, he is persuaded to marry Eleanor to protect his family’s honor. But such chivalry runs counter to his carefully wrought rogue image, and extends the life-threatening plots shadowing him to Eleanor.
To assist, Nicholas reassembles the Company of Rogues, a schoolboy group he started years before. But not even they can dampen Eleanor’s fighting wit that is quickly unmasking their enemy and testing Nicholas’ formidable will.

O what a tangled web we weave. The story tells an awesome tale of love, lies and deceptions. Nicolas is a spy for the government. Eleanor is the new wife he has acquired. There life becomes a game of charades as they hide secrets from each other. Danger abounds that threatens their marriage. The story has wonderful characters and a great plot. …
Interesting but disturbing.
Nicolas Delaney is not who he seems and even when Lionel acts his most vile self and forces Eleanor to do something she has no taste for good old Lionel or maybe Kit will not win out. The question is will Eleanor be hurt or saved? This is not a bad book but there are parts that are disturbing. That said I was intrigued …
Although I found this to be an engaging read although they were some events that I found difficult to come to terms with. Eleanor had suffered quite an ordeal thanks to her despicable brother and his friends. However, more heartache was destined for her. How she remained as strong as she did, really showed her strength of character. Nicholas …
I must confess this is my second time reading the book and I am still amazed by the storytelling! JoBev does such an amazing job conveying the depth of feeling and tension in every situation and her characters wind up in incredibly unbelievable situations. From the start where we shockingly find that Eleanor is drugged and raped by the planning …
This dark story was over all a good read that kept me turning the pages until the end! The characters were detailed enough to keep my attention throughout the entire book!
Wonderfully full characters and a very different kind of story! Loved it.
I not only recommend this book but the whole series It is nice to hear about the main characters of the previous books in the next book.
Enjoyed it
I like all of her books have read most. The stories are usually character driven and her characters are interesting and you like them even as they attempt to find each other
Good “Bodice Ripper”.
I have it 4 stars because I thought the premise a little far-fetched. But then, I didn’t live back then & don’t know if family tradition and such would make it realistic. Great characters and story. Good enough to have me getting next book in series
Jo Beverly always writes an interesting romance.
First in a series. Intrigue, villainy, and conspiracy. Misguided service to the crown.
Fairly well edited.
Eleanor is caught in an untenable situation by the times. Dependent on her wastrel brother, at least until she turns 25, she is forced to live under his roof while he lives a completely reprobate life. Circumstances cause her to flee and she …
I read this a few years ago but to this day as far as a series goes this is one of my top 5 best. All books in the Company of Rogues series where 4 stars and up. I read up to the 12th book I believe. Fantastic, hot men with witty feisty women as their mate’s
I didn’t like Eleanor too much as the heroine in this book. She seems like a simpering fool, though in later Rogue series, she isn’t so bad. I wasn’t thrilled with the plot either. Nicholas is forced into marrying the girl his brother raped by said brother who holds the purse strings. At same time, though, he’s been asked to reconnect with an …
This was one of the first Jo Beverley books that I read. I have now read all of her books and short stories. It will get you hooked on her worlds.
I love a strong heroine. This is sexy and fun and brave and a thorough pleasure to read.
Good story.
