A woman’s heart dares to defy the rules of Victorian society in USA Today bestselling author Caroline Fyffe’s novel of romance, royalty, and a little revenge. In Kent, England, the arrival of Beranger Northcott, Duke of Brightshire, causes a stir. Because with the duke comes his new American bride, who isn’t quite what anyone expects. By accepting the hand of her beloved, Emma Brinkman went from … beloved, Emma Brinkman went from hardworking Colorado rancher to duchess. Now she’s expected to comport herself as nobility. Overnight. For Emma—stifled, homesick, and unable to shake the feeling she’s being watched—the metamorphosis is a challenge. And if Emma’s suspicions are correct, perhaps even a dangerous one.
Fortunately, Emma has found a trusted friend in the orphaned Charlotte, Brightshire’s scullery maid. Charlotte longs to experience—if only for a moment—the luxuries and gentry romance that come with a titled life. When one of the duke’s handsome cousins takes notice of Charlotte, the castle kitchen is set abuzz with speculation.
In navigating their two different stations, both servant and duchess alike will discover all they have in common—from secret fantasies to daring hearts to upending the rules of society. And that finding their places in the world—and love—is a dream that can come true—no matter the risks.

When you read a book by Caroline Fyffe, you know some things to expect. Always romance but mixed with problems getting there. Mayhem or something like that is always present to make for an interesting story, and characters old and new that fascinate you. Then sometimes some sort of mystery that may or may not happen. This is now my most favorite novel of Ms. Fyffe’s. I would give it twenty starts if I could. That is how good this one is and how it made me feel.
An American Duchess exceeds all that you have known about her stories. If you have read Colorado Hearts series, the first three stories, this is an extension of sorts as Emma and Beranger go to England since he has recently become the Duke of Brightshire. A train trip across America to New York to get on a ship headed to England. Emma is excited but misses her sister’s already since they have never been apart before. This is the beginning of a new adventure or not.
Mystery, murder, poisoning, kidnapping, trying to learn the etiquette of the high born of England and not making mistakes as a new Duchess in a castle that is so huge.
Then the evil step mother and step sister. My oh my, how will they both get known as good Duke and Duchess who will take over and fix whatever Beranger’s dead brother, the last Duke being short lived, what he has done to ruin the finances of the Dukedom.
There is so much that goes on in this story it makes my head spin but also kept me reading from the first page with very little sleep right until an all-nighter to finish because I had to get to the end to see who did what to who and all the surprises that come out.
Don’t miss reading this novel. Ms. Fyffe has weaved a story of unbelievable proportions that my head is still spinning and writing this review which I really wanted to do but I am having a hard time pulling it together without telling too much. There is more in this novel than I have ever read in any other of her novels.
This is highly a recommended one to grab and plan a few long days of reading.
You will not regret on moment of time spent reading this one. I am still trying to figure out how I missed this or that as I usually figure out what is going to happen.
I received an advance copy by the publisher and I am so happy I did. Without any push to write a review at all, I sincerely wanted to wanted to. It is that good.
Another great book from Caroline. I love reading about the Brinkman sisters and I can’t wait to see which sister is next. A definite must read.
While this might be considered part of the Colorado Hearts series, I think of it as the start of, what I am hoping, is a new offshoot series. Emma Brinkman’s story of romance is told in Heart of Mine. (And I do recommend reading it first). This is a continuation of her story, and what a continuation it is.
Emma travels to England with her new husband Beranger Northcott who now holds a title…….of Duke of Brightshire. This story has romance, suspense, who-done-it, and friendships that are a bit frowned upon for the time period.
I love all of Caroline Fyffe’s books, but this one is I think my favorite. So, no spoilers here, just a recommendation to read this book. It’s a trip thought Victorian England as seen through the eyes of a women from the Colorado frontier.
This book is a fabulous read! There are heart-stopping moments as well as romantic adventures in this story. I absolutely love the Colorado Hearts series and was astounded when Emma, the middle sister, met the love of her life, married and moved with him back to England. Beranger Northcott, now a Duke, was called back to his homeland.
This is a new adventure for Emma, now a Duchess with duties in Brightshire; a mother-in-law now looking at this commoner; and, will she find friends in this village or within the castle itself. Everything you would ever want in a story-line is in this book. Ms. Fyffe did an amazing job of writing this adventure.
If you’ve read Caroline Fyffe’s Colorado Hearts Series, you will love the continuation of Emma and Bertranger’s story in An American Duchess. If you haven’t, this is a stand-alone story where you will love getting to know them! It’s a romance, a mystery and historical fiction all set in Victorian English society. Fyffe is one of those authors you will come back to again and again. I just purchased the Prairie Hearts series to read next (while I’m waiting to learn more about Emma and her sisters — or maybe Charlotte!!)
I LOVED THIS BOOK!! Emma Brinkman an American bride marries Beranger Northcutt, Duke of Brightshire. If you are a fan of Downton Abbey you will love this book. Even if you know nothing about Downton Abbey, you will love this book. This is a beautifully written novel that puts you into the life of royalty and the beautiful relationship of Emma and Berlinger and their staff. There is a bit of mystery and drama throughout the book as well. I cannot recommend this book enough. I could not put it down. The author does a beautiful job with character development and describing the scenery. I loved this book and look forward to reading more Caroline Fyffe.
Emma and Beranger marry and soon find out he is the Duke of Brightshire. The move from Colorado to England and from farm girl to Duchess makes for a exciting and entertaining story. With death, possible murder and a mystery illness this story has it all. I highly recommend you read this book and all titles by Caroline
England watch out. Just like in Eden Colorado one of the Brinkman sisters is about to take Kent England’s society by the horns, after all being a successful rancher should help her conquer just about anything. While Emma battles with England’s society Charlotte a beautiful scullery maids dreams of being part of such society, struggles and all. Both woman embark in a great adventure of mystery and love, both are challenged but succeed in their new found roles. Mayhem and mystery surround Emma and Beranger in this new adventure, after all the the the cursed child of the Duke of Kent has returned.
With her vivid style of writing Caroline Fyffe brings to life a new story with old characters and new. She captured the eccentricity of England society will keeping Emma’s American heritage an important part of the book.
Caroline Fyffe is an author who will keep you coming back. Her stories draw you into the characters lives and make you feel like you are right there! An American Duchess does not disappoint! I am not into books about England and “royalty”, but this book held me spellbound from beginning to end. A must read!
Caroline Fyffe has done it again!
This book is about Emma, who grew up in America and marries a man, Beranger, who is originally from England and must return there after learning he is next in line to be the Duke of Brightshire. Can you imagine you’re a newlywed and suddenly thrust into living in a new country and know nothing about the aristocracy and traditions? The book flows nicely and has well developed characters. It’s about love, friendships and jealousy. It has humor, suspicions and, of course, traditions throughout the book. There are a few secondary stories/issues that it’s hard to put down wanting to know what is happening next. I received a copy of this book to read and give an honest review of the book, which I have done.
Caroline Fyffe is one of my favorite authors. This book is one from her Colorado Hearts series. I loved reading about Emma and Beranger and the start of their new life in England. Exciting and unpredictable to the end! New characters in this book were interesting and I am excited to continue reading about in the future!
I can’t offer enough praise about this book. The historical aspects of the characters and places will take you right inside this story. How do you create such intricate, historical, realistic images with words, dearheart Caroline? I am always in awe of a Caroline Fyffe book because it has sincere, true depth, brilliant characters and so much honest to goodness storytelling…You will not be able to put this book down..You will not lend it to anyone..You will read it again and again!!! A must read!!!…xo
