Detective John Stone of the NYPD has the best arrest record in the 43rd precinct. But he’s a dinosaur who belongs to another age. Detective Carmen Dehan has such a bad attitude that nobody at the precinct can stomach her. Captain Jennifer Cuevas wants them both out of the way and thinks they make a perfect pair. So she gives them the Cold Cases file – the cases nobody gives a damn about. She has … about.
She has no idea just how hot a cold case can get.
Ten years back Nelson Hernandez and his four cousins were playing poker in a dive at Hunts Point. Somebody came in, blew them away and beheaded and castrated Nelson, leaving his head and his balls on the table. There was no shortage of suspects, the Jersey Mob, the Triads from Manhattan, or the 43rds own bent cop, Mick Harragan. But nobody was ever charged, and the night of the murder Mick Harragan went missing with Nelson’s wife, Maria.
Now Stone and Dehan plan to find him – whatever the consequences…

Interesting who done it to pass a quiet day reading
Good investigative detective story. I enjoyed the different approaches to solving the mystery
Be prepared for a LOT of bad language. To really enjoy a book I have to feel attached to the main characters. I have not felt that way with this book. They just don’t seem very interesting.
Not the most well written (or maybe it’s the poor editing) but this series of books keep you engaged with the main characters throughout the entire read.
Entertainment mixed with semi factual real life law enforcement
Good, but took a bit to get into the story.
Good story told in a compelling way.
Great story line and I esp. liked the interaction of the characters! Had to get the rest of the series that has been published and looking forward to getting the latest!
Great read !
I couldn read more than a few pages of this because I couldn’t get past the author’s sexism–the female characters were described in terms of their physical attractiveness to the point that it made me wonder if the author has ever met an actual woman in real life. Female characters should not be decoration for a story–a good author will give depth to female characters and not merely focus on them being “pretty.”
I really found it interesting because I am fascinated in cold cases. i have been reading rest of the series.
Looking for more of this author’s work. Great read!
Plenty of plot twists
This was a very enjoyable book to read with excellent characters.
Enjoyed the humour.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were not like every other book. … in a very good way!
ok I guess, but did not finish. Airport read
Not the greatest writing style– I was glad when I finished it.
A crusty veteran male detective is paired with a young, aggressive female partner. Their personalities mesh, against all odds (big surprise, right?), and they become a very effective crime-fighting team. One characteristic they both share is integrity, which is not so common in their environment.
Good out to conquer evil…regardless of source. This book takes a new stab an an old theme and does a good job at itl
