Detective John Stone of the NYPD has the best arrest record in the 43rd precinct. But he’s a dinosaur who belongs to another age. Detective Carmen Dehan has such a bad attitude that nobody at the precinct can stomach her. Captain Jennifer Cuevas wants them both out of the way and thinks they make a perfect pair. So she gives them the Cold Cases file – the cases nobody gives a damn about. She has … about.
She has no idea just how hot a cold case can get.
Ten years back Nelson Hernandez and his four cousins were playing poker in a dive at Hunts Point. Somebody came in, blew them away and beheaded and castrated Nelson, leaving his head and his balls on the table. There was no shortage of suspects, the Jersey Mob, the Triads from Manhattan, or the 43rds own bent cop, Mick Harragan. But nobody was ever charged, and the night of the murder Mick Harragan went missing with Nelson’s wife, Maria.
Now Stone and Dehan plan to find him – whatever the consequences…

Hard to get into and too many f words
total WOW!!!! the dynamic between the main characters, story line…..
I likwd everything about this book.
Love Detectives Stone and Dedham. Hope to read more with these two.
Love the interaction between the detectives Good reading so I even read the second novel and will return for the third.
It is an okay book
Kept me up most of the night!
This is a story that was so hard for me to put down. I read while on the train to & from work. However I had to finish this at home & had book 2 loaded for the next morning. Can’t wait to get started reading.
I truly enjoyed the book. I really liked the two main characters. Hope there is another book with these two characters.
Loved this book and the characters.
This book had many twists. Just when you thought you had it figured out, it took another turn. One of those “I can’t go to sleep until I finish this” kind of book.
awesome read
I like police procedurals. I also found it interesting because it had a lot of action in my part of Texas, the Panhandle. I liked the characters.
This book has strong protagonists. That they have some oddball labels would be tedious, except that the author has given them power as capable, talented professionals, which overcomes a typical “us against them” storyline.
Made me want to meet the main characters, and the plot kept me guessing the whole way.
This was the first book by Blake Banner that caught my attention. By the end I was hooked and have since been reading them in order. I am currently reading Let Us Prey. I recommend this series.
I really enjoyed Ace & a Pair. I found the characters interesting and I liked the author’s wry sense of humor. I would have given it 5 stars but the editing needed more work. There were a lot of missing words and incorrect tenses. This did distract from the reading somewhat. But overall I would recommend it as an fun and enjoyable read.
This is one of the best books that I have read in a long time. I felt this was a book that was very hard to put down once you’ve picked it up.
I now have another favorite author to add to my list.
A very nice pairing of characters. Two detectives that are not good team players in the eyes of the department find they bring our the best in each other and are very good at solving cold cases when paired.
The first of a really good series that should be read in order.
Interesting police detective misfits with a very human side.
