Amy’s Square is atmospheric, and Dominic Schunker has a wonderful attention to detail. That said, the beginning of the story is taken up by character and world-building, and it moves at a much slower pace than I care for. Once that’s taken care of, the story does take off, and that’s where the thriller kicks in. The author draws us in with well-described locations and an air of mystery. There are even a couple of twists I didn’t see coming, and that doesn’t happen often. The only real drawback for me was all the world-building in the beginning. I prefer it to take place more organically throughout the story, but I realized as the story unfolds that much of it was necessary. In the end, Amy’s Square is very well written and thoroughly entertaining.
When I read the blurb for Amy’s Square, my initial first impression was that this book was going to be a book like The DaVinci Code. Since I liked The DaVinci Code, I decided that I would read Amy’s Square.
Amy’s Square’s plotline took a while to get going. It crept, which I didn’t enjoy. I understood that the author was world and character building, but I wanted it to go faster. When the book finally did get moving, about halfway through the book, it flew along.
Another issue that I had with Amy’s Square is that it was filled with British slang. At first, it confused me (and my phone got a workout from Googling it), but I got used to it.
I pitied Abe for the first half of the book. I couldn’t imagine being dumped the way he was. No wonder he was a mess!! I would have been too. Then the second half of the book came around, and I loved him. When he got his diagnosis, he decided to live. That included spying on a company called xLight and refinding love.
The author didn’t get into xLight. What was explained as it was a huge corporation that had its hand in some bad things that were happening. On the one hand, I wished that he told it, but on the other hand, I loved the mystery.
The end of Amy’s Square had a couple of twists that I didn’t see coming. The first one left me with my mouth open, but the second one made me put my book down and say, “NO!!!!”.
This beautiful little story takes a while to get started. The first third of the book strayed back-and-forth and I wasn’t really clear where it was going. However once things started to settle in the story picked up and things got really crazy.
It had an eclectic bunch of characters; each unforgettable in their own unique way. The setting moved from England to the Amazon to Russia to North Africa to Spain and points in between. There was sex, drugs and everything was rock ‘n’ roll. And just when things were going along nicely, the ending took a strange turn and then yet another. All in all, a wonderful book.
