It has been ten years since the Last Day, and the Juvies huddle inside the mountain, waiting for the world to thaw. But outside the storms still rage, and supplies are running low. Kane says they are the Chosen Ones, but sixteen-year-old Gabriel isn’t so sure.
Then while out scavenging Gabriel finds a bloodstained map. The blood’s not a problem, nor are the frozen remains of the person it once … person it once belonged to; there’s far worse to be found in any Walmart or Piggly Wiggly you care to wander into. Except this one he recognizes. It shouldn’t be here. Now all Gabriel can think of is how he’s going to get back to Eden and let Kane know what he’s found.
But Gabriel’s troubles are only just beginning. For things are not as they seem in Eden, and soon he will face a much larger problem: how to get Mags and the other Juvies out.

A virus is unleashed. The president gathers up a group of school children and rushes them off to a underground bunker, as nuclear warheads are unleashed. Years later a boy and a soldier are sent out into the frozen wasteland to forage for supplies and look for life. This begins the Children of the Mountain series. I could not put it down, and I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series.
It was a gripping read that was well told. I almost couldn’t put it down and read
it all in one sitting!
Very slow and confusing start (in fact I came close to quitting) but when it finally kicks into gear you’d better hold on tight! Twists, turns and a couple of ‘did NOT see that coming’ moments made the final two thirds of this book a real page-turner. Will be reading the next installment…
After the “last day” thirty children are in a bunker with the president of the United States. But something isn’t right. Even for the end of the world this isn’t normal.
A little distracting due to the second story line of the person who actually brought about the end. Takes awhile to figure out who Lisa is talking about when she only refers to his as “Preacher”.
Liked it enough to buy the next two in the series.
Dystopian story in post-apocolyptic America. Riveting storyline with twists and turns because of the unreliable narrator who is slow to put the pieces together. Excellent detail. Highly recommend.
I got this book for free on Bookbub, but enjoyed it so much that I bought the next two in the series. It’s an apocalyptic novel set in a dark and desperate future. While it contains echoes of popular dystopian, zombie, and vampire literature, including the novel version of I Am Legend, the story is still original. The main characters, primarily teens, are appealing and relatable. The book is an entertaining read and I thoroughly recommend it (and the two subsequent books).
Really enjoyed this one!! Great writing and memorable quotes worth highlighting. I’ve read several of these dystopian dramas and this one doesn’t lose hope.
This book featured an interesting plot, non stop action. This is not destined to be a classic anything but for a fun, quick, unexpectedly good read, you can’t go wrong.
Great, surprising story!
Post-apocalyptic (my favorite genre). Survivors of both a horrible disease and a nuclear winter live in a buried shelter somewhere not too far from Washington, DC. The main character, Gabriel, is 16; he is part of a group of children whose first-grade class was on a trip to visit the White House when it was evacuated and all occupants were brought to this shelter. They assume they are the only survivors in the devastated world. Gabriel is a scavenger – he goes out into the frozen world to look for medications, food, and anything else useful that might have survived. What makes this interesting is that what has become normal to the children is no education (most of them can’t read), a limited diet, and the fact that a mate will be picked for them when they are all 16. It’s hard to tell at first who the good guys are. No one is quite what they seem. I’m looking forward to the next book.
I loved this book and have just bought the second book in this series!
Great voice and decent writing, but a bit of a twist (pc) ending that kind of spoiled the whole thing for me. First 2/3 of book I really liked.
Among Wolves is an apocalyptic book that was such a pg turner I finished it in a day.. Hakok’s style of writing will keep you engaged throughout the journey Gabriel, the main character, has to go through. It had me guessing all the way till the end.
Great book, great series, I can’t wait for the author to publish #5!
I liked this book, it was original and scary to think “what if” something like this happened in the real world. I am curious to see where the next two books in the series take the plot. It was well written and the charachters were well developed and realistic given their situation and what they were going through. As with all action fiction, there is a little “luck” and stretching of what might be capable of a human, but overall I liked it.
did not get past 1-2 chapters
