Can be read alone as it contains a good recap but is best if read in sequence.
This is the first book I’ve read so far and seems to be an introduction to the family. It was typical of some of the other books I’ve read about the Amish lifestyle. This one was settled around an apple orchard that provided their income and the details were interesting.
The characters were engaging but I grew tired of the constant bickering between the younger siblings. Also, it didn’t seem like the mother took much of a role in parenting due to her husband’s death. Florence sacrificed her chance to marry in order to run the orchard and house.
It was a story of deceit, selfishness, and taking a chance on love. The spiritual aspect came in mostly from Florence who seemed to be frustrated with her life.
