Two girls vying for the prince’s heart.
This is the story of the American royals.
When America won the Revolutionary War, its people offered General George Washington a crown. Two and a half centuries later, the House of Washington still sits on the throne. Like most royal families, the Washingtons have an heir and a spare. A future monarch and a backup battery. Each child knows exactly what is expected of them. But these aren’t just any royals. They’re American.
As Princess Beatrice gets closer to becoming America’s first queen regnant, the duty she has embraced her entire life suddenly feels stifling. Nobody cares about the spare except when she’s breaking the rules, so Princess Samantha doesn’t care much about anything, either . . . except the one boy who is distinctly off-limits to her. And then there’s Samantha’s twin, Prince Jefferson. If he’d been born a generation earlier, he would have stood first in line for the throne, but the new laws of succession make him third. Most of America adores their devastatingly handsome prince . . . but two very different girls are vying to capture his heart.
The duty. The intrigue. The Crown. New York Times bestselling author Katharine McGee imagines an alternate version of the modern world, one where the glittering age of monarchies has not yet faded–and where love is still powerful enough to change the course of history.
“The lives of the American royal family will hook you in the very first pages and never let go. Relatable, believable, fantastical, aspirational, and completely addictive.” –Sara Shepard, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Pretty Little Liars and Perfectionists series

Inventive, fresh, and deliciously romantic — American Royals is an absolute delight!
I was captivated by this novel and delighted to find out that there will be a sequel! This is a perfect read for those who loved The Royal We. I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next.
I cannot describe in words my love for this book. It’s like Katharine McGee wrote a soap opera without all the cheesy, crazy parts. The romances were all so adorable, and I’m seriously in love with Jeff and Connor. My favorite scene was the one where Jeff and Nina went to Wawa. I found it hilarious! My favorite couple is Beatrice and Connor, though. Katharine McGee did a fabulous job with this one and gets all the stars!!!!
I need these characters to get their happily ever afters in the next book!!!
I absolutely adored this book! It has a great premise: what if George Washington had been crowned king of America, rather than elected president? What would his descendants – the current heirs to the American throne – be up to? This book was just so much fun to get lost in, and the writing was surprisingly captivating. It would not have been hard to turn this premise into a light, superficial read, but it ended up being endearing and funny and romantic and one of the books I’ve most enjoyed reading so far this year. Can’t wait for the sequel!
This is a MUST READ if you enjoy royalty-themed fiction. I was absolutely obsessed with this and started reading the sequel as soon as I finished it. So original and so well written. I adored this.
I purchased this book as soon as it was released because I was so excited by the premise (What id George Washington had become King? Meet the modern American royal family!) . . . but then left it on my bookshelf for nearly a year because I heard that there was a cliffhanger and a sequel coming (I hate cliffhangers, okay?!). Now that the sequel’s release date is on the horizon (Sept 2020!) I finally picked it up and wow. Sucked me right in! The creative and unique premise really carries this book. Even if you hate the characters, the plot, etc. you read because of curiosity, because you want to know “What WOULD a modern AMERICAN royal family be like? What our government be like? What would the White House be like? OUR FIRST QUEEN?” Curiosity really kept me hooked. Setting aside the high praise for the premise, I will say this book felt a little *young.* Despite the main characters being college-aged or older, I felt a little bit like I was reading a young adult novel, and not adult fiction. I’m not entirely sure why, maybe it was that things felt a little simple? The characters needed more depth? Unsure. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am super psyched for the sequel.
The lives of the American royal family will hook you in the very first pages and never let go. Relatable, believable, fantastical, aspirational, and completely addictive.
With elegance, saucy secrets, and forbidden love, American Royals is fast-paced and utterly charming. Katharine McGee’s prose sparkles, capturing the glamour and pressures of an American monarchy.
New twist on royal love theme
I listened to this book on Audible, so first of all I would like to say that the narrator did a fantastic job.
The story itself was immediately interesting to me. I’ll be honest, I’ve heard people recommend this book, but I wasn’t sure what it was about and assumed it would be sort of like Gossip Girl. Wherein the “Royalty” was actually just rich people who thought they were better than everyone else. I was actually pleasantly surprised when I learned that it was sort of an alternate history type story in which we see what the country might be like if George Washington had been the first King, rather than the first President of America.
I liked how the book was told in several different points of view, so you can really get a feel for all the moving parts of the story. How each situation kind of ends up affecting the other storylines and how all of these characters’ lives are interwoven. I especially enjoyed Beatrice’s POV and Nina’s. All of the characters were intriguing, and kept me interested in what was going on and what might happen next.
Little did I know when I started, that I would become so invested, because there was quite a cliffhanger at the end and now I don’t have book two to read right away. It’s been officially added to my wish list, however!
I do think fans of Gossip Girl will enjoy this book, but I also think fans of books like Princess Diaries or other royalty stories will enjoy it as well.
What if George Washington had become king rather than president? This deeply entertaining read introduces us to the modern-day American princesses of that alternate reality, and those caught up in their world of pomp and pageantry. I’m totally invested in this series. Must find out what happens next!
Boring
I loved this book! It had me feeling all emotions at different time. I was laughing, seething, and crying. I loved getting to know Beatrice, Samantha, and Jefferson. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!
I tried to read this a few months ago and it didn’t work for me at the time. So glad I gave it a second chance! American Royals reminds me of a tv mini series full of drama, love, and backstabbing just like Gossip Girl. The story starts with an American monarchy – what’s democracy?
The book is told from four POV’s: Beatrice, the heir; Sam, the spare; Nina, Sam’s best friend; and Daphne, the girl out for power. Beatrice is my favorite of the four. I couldn’t wait to see what happened with her and the mess her parents put her in. She’s responsible and full of grace and poise. It’s provoking to see her inner desires fight with her training and sense of duty.
Thankfully, Majesty has been released! I don’t know if I could have waited very patiently to continue on.
American Royals hooked me in right from the start. It was fun to imagine what life would be like if George Washington had become King instead of President and the resulting Washington monarchy we’d have today. The story centers around the heir to the American throne, Beatrice Washington, her siblings, twins Samantha and Jefferson, and a couple of friends or maybe frenemies. There is a definite Gossip Girls vibe with this group of characters. Drama, a love triangle, lies, paparazzi, forbidden love, a royal ball, and American Crown Jewels…this book has all the ingredients for an addictive read. My only complaint is that it left me wanting more. This story is not all wrapped up in a bow by the time you get to the end…you have to read American Royals II: Majesty for the continuation. I felt like the book ended with a major cliffhanger. My favorite characters are Nina & Samantha, but they really are all fun to read about.
“She had never been any good at disguising her feelings. There was something too immediate about her face, the way all her emotions played themselves out over her features like the shadows of clouds on water.”
What if America was a monarch like England? American royals shares the story of four girls. Beatrice, who is in line to be the first Queen Regnant who has learn to follow all the rules and traditions of the American monarch but has trouble when those rules and her heart doesn’t align. Sam, Bea’s younger sister, known as the rebel, falls for her sister’s boyfriend. Nina, long time best friend of Sam who finds herself falling hard for Sam’s twin, Jefferson. Daphne, Jefferson’s ex who has her sights in marrying into the royal family, willing to do anything to gain royal status. American Royals is a fun modern take of the Crown in teenage form of forbidden love, bridling traditions, and a world of luxury. Love hearing stories about William, Kate, Harry or Meghan? You will love this series!
I knew this book was going to be a ridiculous frothy teen-drama, but I didn’t realize how MUCH. I brought it with me on a three-day stay-cation to the other side of the island and it was perfect as a mind-numbing meaningless read by the pool.
All the characters are cardboard cutouts of the stereotype they’ve been assigned. Princess Beatrice is the regal and caged Heir to the American throne. There are her twin siblings Princess Sam and Prince Jeff…Sam falling into the ‘Spare” roll of irresponsible party girl and Jeff serving no other purpose than being someone’s love interest, whether it be Daphne or Nina. He never had a mind of his own in this story.
And then there’s Daphne and Nina. The former is the cunning mean-girl extraordinaire who will stop at nothing to attain her goal of becoming Prince Jeff’s wife, making her a Princess, and Nina, the ‘normal’ everyday girl whose mother works for the palace, making her the lifelong best friend of Princess Samantha who struggles with balancing her friendships and relationships among the Royal Family and that of being a regular college student who wants nothing more than to stay out of the limelight.
There was just so much ‘We shouldn’t be doing this!’, ‘I can’t allow myself to feel this way!’. ‘I’m not the girl for you, you deserve someone better!’, ‘No one cares what I do, I’m only the second child!’. ‘I must do what’s right for the country and put my own desires aside, poor me.’, that I was in danger of my eyes actually getting stuck in the back of my head from rolling them so many times.
Needless to say, I didn’t like it. I gave it two stars because I finished it and didn’t DNF it, but I will not be continuing on with the second book. However, judging by the reviews of that book, it looks like I’m dodging a bullet.
This romance fiction novel of what might have happened if there were a royal monarchy in America and how the main characters Princess Beatrice, Samantha and Prince Jefferson live there mixed up lives. I enjoyed reading this book even though it was a little long. I received this free book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
It’s interesting to contemplate what might have happened to the land of America if the founding fathers had chosen a different form of government. The book doesn’t present all the ramifications. but it it does supply a taste of it and also good for thought.
Fun and Royally Entertaining…
I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the second one in the series. There was only one character I didn’t particularly enjoy reading about, but the rest of the cast was fantastic.
