Alice may be the president’s daughter, but she’s nobody’s darling. As bold as her signature color Alice Blue, the gum-chewing, cigarette-smoking, poker-playing First Daughter discovers that the only way for a woman to stand out in Washington is to make waves—oceans of them. With the canny sophistication of the savviest politician on the Hill, Alice uses her celebrity to her advantage, testing the limits of her power and the seductive thrill of political entanglements.
But Washington, DC is rife with heartaches and betrayals, and when Alice falls hard for a smooth-talking congressman it will take everything this rebel has to emerge triumphant and claim her place as an American icon. As Alice soldiers through the devastation of two world wars and brazens out a cutting feud with her famous Roosevelt cousins, it’s no wonder everyone in the capital refers to her as the Other Washington Monument—and Alice intends to outlast them all.

Entertaining account of family relationships, love and loss.
Alice Roosevelt was a hoot! A really enjoyable read.
I love to read historical fiction and this is a great book to demonstrate why I love this genre so much. I knew very little about Alice Roosevelt Longworth. This book appeared to be well researched and gave the reader a great insight to one of America’s first families especially the oldest daughter of T. Roosevelt. It revealed the life of a privilege daughter and how she was a challenge to society’s norm at that time. It depicted a child and a young woman seeking the love of a distant father and how this affected her future relationships. It demonstrated a long life filled with happiness and great tragedy. A well written novel.
This story is great in picturing the times and feel like you walk with the characters. Well done. Alice was ahead of her time. Too bad women did not vote at that time.
A fabulous historical novel. I was wonderfully educated and entertained about a part of our history I knew nothing about.
The author’s descriptive prose pulled me right into the life and times of Alice Roosevelt Longworth–a remarkable, resilient woman who witnessed most of the major events of the 20th Century and personally knew (and outlived) many of the major players. Above all, it’s an inspiring story of perseverance despite pain, of triumph over tragedy. It brought me to laughter and tears, along with a deep admiration for Theodore Roosevelt’s eldest child. Highly recommended!
American Princess by Stephanie Thornton is a fabulous read. I love historical fiction, especially that pertaining to the founding mothers and daughters. Thornton portrays Alice Roosevelt’s story in an eloquent and entertaining manner, making her a new favorite (both the author and Alice!). This is a must read!
I am not sue if I disliked the book or simply disliked Alice who had everything but whined her way through life.
I learned so much about American history. The best part is I felt like I got to know Alice Roosevelt. I only wish I did!
Very interesting material. I learned a lot. Quick, easy read!
Great look at that time period.
Historical context fascinating. Alice was a free spirit like her Dad Theodore.
I knew very little of Alice Roosevelt so I learned a lot about her and the times in which she lived, Very well researched and we’ll worth your time!
I enjoyed reading this; full of interesting history and well-known people. Lots of ‘behind the scene’ observations.
Interesting story about Teddy Roosevelt ‘s oldest daughter.
Interesting, felt bad for Alice at times. She was her own person though and strong.
History told with a personal touch. Liked it much more than I thought I would.
Loved it! Bought the book for my sister to read.
The author liked Alice a whole lot more than I did!
I give this book 5 stars +++. If you love to read historical fiction, this book is for you. I found this book compelling, informative, entertaining, heart breaking and so much more.
