This was my first Dan Petrosini book. The story is intriguing, filled with twists and turns, letting you guessing throughout the story. Francis G. Kearney did a great job with the narration. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This review is for the audio book.
I enjoyed this book. I found with in just a few minutes that I cared about the characters and hoped that he would turn out to be innocent of the crime he was accused of. The story starts with how the suspect was injured and what he and his brother went through while In hospital and is told through there eyes. Then after the murder the book is told by several characters but mainly by the lead detective Luca and the two brother, which I think works really well and keeps the story interesting. The mystery was good and it did keep you guessing whether he was guilty or innocent all the way through. The main character is stubborn and goes with his gut, a lot which makes the top brass unhappy but makes for a great character and I look forward to see how he develops with each book and I hope the author has plans for the rest of the series to be released as audio books.
Pete Hill is on his way home from fighting in Afghanistan when he is injured. The head injury turns his and his brothers world upside down, as he has to relearn how to do everyday tasks. The biggest problem is the effect the trauma has on his memory, so when a man is killed Pete has no idea if he is guilty or not. Billy was a bully and one of his victims at school was Pete but his biggest crime was stealing Pete’s girlfriend while he was away. Could that be the motive? He just can’t remember. The detective in charge of the investigation thinks that Pete makes an easy target and with his bosses pushing for homicide cases to be sollved more quickly he refuses to be rushed into making a quick arrest. With the evidence stacking up against Pete, the more Luca believes someone else is responsible. Can he find who really killed Billy before he send another innocent man to jail?
I liked the narrator and thought he did a good job, there was a lot of characters from suspects to doctor’s but he tried to give them all there own voices.
4.5 Stars. My favorite genre is romantic suspense/mystery. This books falls under a criminal drama, which is new for me. A mystery is solved, but there is no romance, which I missed.
Frank Luca is a seasoned police detective. He is known for his thorough criminal investigation work. The trouble is, Luca gets totally absorbed when working a case, almost obsessed. His marriage is on thin ice and yet, he still brings his work home with him.
This story really hit home for me, as my husband is TBI survivor. It was heartbreaking reading what Peter went through. One day he is a alpha male fighting for his country and the next day he is fighting for his life, and facing a lifetime of medical and psychological problems. The recovery process is exhausting and frustrating for people with severe TBIs, and most never make a full recovery. As it states in the book, it is the invisible disability. Even worst, there is a negative stigma associated with having a head injury (brain damage) that physical disabilities don’t have. I appreciate this author’s sensitivity when writing about this disability that impacts so many, especially our soldiers and young adults.
I liked the originality of the plot. I was never quite sure what direction the author would take regarding the outcome of this case.
Am I the Killer? (A Luca Mystery #1), my second read from author Dan Petrosini. After reading The Final Enemy, my first read from the author Dan Petrosini, in all truth, I picked it up thinking it was the first book in The Luca Mystery series. Seriously well-developed, in fact the author spends the first quarter of the book laying the groundwork of plot & characters. In fact, when Luca is finally brought in he blends in as just another character if I wasn’t looking for his name I wouldn’t have realized he was the primary character at that time. I look forward to reading more from this author and in this series. Next up is Vanished (Luca Mystery #2). (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
