Maureen Evans has had a crush on Smith Harrington since they were in college together. She always knew he didn’t see her as anything more than his best friend—just one of the guys—but that didn’t stop her from weaving sexy fantasies about him.
Now, after years of maintaining a long-distance friendship, Smith’s moving to Burton, Georgia, Maureen’s hometown, to become her partner at the veterinary … veterinary clinic. After all this time, she should be able to handle working with him without getting hot and bothered.
Or maybe not.
The more determined Maureen is to maintain their just-friends bond, the more Smith seems intent on testing those boundaries. And when flirting crosses the line into something more, it ends in a night neither of them can forget.
When friendship is no longer enough, there’s always love.

We briefly met Maureen in the first set of Burton books (I’m so happy to be back in Burton) and even then I was interested in her story.
Maureen really hit home with me since I had the same situation with my now husband. She is oblivious to Smith’s feelings because she thinks there is no way that incredibly hot guy could care about her even though it is obvious to everyone around her that he did.
Maureen was naive and felt she wasn’t worthy for anyone especially someone like Smith, she thought she was forever friend-zoned. Sometimes we need someone to show us that we are worthy. Don’t worry, Maureen was never whiny and she is not weak by any sense. She has a veterinary practice, strong relationships with family and friends but she was unlucky in love. I loved how the book went back to show Smith and Maureen in college too and we got to see the feeling develop.
Another awesome book by Tawdra! Especially loved the character Smith in this book and the steamy romantic scenes. This is definitely one of my favorite books in the small town series!
Maureen has secretly loved Smith practically since the day they met freshman year at college but has always felt he only wanted friendship. Smith has secretly loved Maureen practically since the day they met but has always felt she only wanted friendship. Do you see where this is going? As BF’s since they met, when Maureen offers Smith a partnership in her new Vet practice and the opportunity to share her new home, he jumps at the chance. This may just finally be the right circumstance to push their relationship out of the “friend zone.” Of course, nothing is every that simple, and when well-meaning friends and family get involved, things can become downright complicated. There’s a bit of humor in this delightful tale and a whole lot of charm. I loved the chemistry between Maureen and Smith. They are so obviously meant for each other that it will warm the cockles of your heart. It’s quite an enchanting read that will keep you entertained from beginning to end.
A lovely read about best friends who have denied their feelings for each other for ten years. Smith and Maureen join forces as the towns new vets and get the chance to ponder and explore their relationship.
The town of Burton is small and inviting with adorable friends and family.
Great
Maureen has always felt like the girl left out. But Smith was the boy she met moving into the dorms her freshman year. They stated friends through college & vet school. There has always been a spark but neither told each other. They have a chance now.
All the pieces in Maureen Evans life are falling right into place, she is moving into her own home, a friend and her are opening a Veterinarian business, and now the next thing on her “to do” list is to find love. Up and until now, she hasn’t made much time for dating because she has been too focused on getting her business started, and also still a little hung up on lingering feelings for her friend Smith. As soon as she met Smith Harrington in college, an instant friendship bloomed, and while she always wanted something more with him, he always found a way to keep her in the friend zone. And now that he is going to be her business partner, and tenant, she figures it is best time as any to let her feelings for him go, and finally move on with someone new.
Smith Harrington has been in love with Maureen Evans since the first time he laid eyes on her back in college. He always tried to make his feelings for her known, but she never seem to pick up on his hints, or his flirty advances. So he figured she just wasn’t interested in anything other than friendship, so he tried to move on and let his feelings go, but no matter how hard he tried they were always there lingering. When she called and offered him to go into business with her he jumped at the chance to be close to her again, and hopes that he might finally be able to convince her that they would be perfect together.
This was my first time reading a book by this author, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it, so much so, I plan to revisit the series and read future installments. The story line pulled me almost immediately and had me staying up well past my bedtime just to finish it! I think it is safe to say that Ms. Kandle has a hit on her hands with this one!! If you like small town romance stories with a southern twist, then this is the perfect read for you!!
This was a short, easy read. Had a couple of editing issues. The h was not a strong character, I wasn’t sure what the H saw in her – she had zero confidence and her response to a single defining incident when they were in college was bizarre and over the top. I wouldn’t read it again, but I would try another book by this author.
This book was an easy read. So if u wanna escape for a few hrs it’s a book for you.
