This book was different then things that I normally read, but I love it. It kept me going back and forth trying to figure out what was going to happen next. This book also had a few different main charters, and at 1st I had trouble keeping them straight. However, once I got about halfway through it got easier. I would definitely recommend everyone to read this book.
First things first! Cliff hangers should be illegal! The cliffhanger at the end of this book spartan kicked me off the cliff with no warning and no parachute to slow my fall. This story has amazing storytelling! I was drawn into the book from page one. From Gigi’s mental disability, to Ellen’s weight loss problem to Lilly’s divorce, each person has something that’s real world relatable and something that at least one person has experience with. The different perspectives were done seamlessly and wonderful. I didn’t get lost on whose perspective I was reading. I was glad you get to see inside Dr. Kite’s perspective. Most of the time you don’t get to see that.
This book did get me thinking. Are we pretty close to achieving this in real life if we keep going? It spurred so many questions about in real life and it made me question “Would I want something like that?
I enjoyed reading this book, and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
Alterations (Alterations Trilogy, Book 1) by Jane Suen – Review by Krista Vaughan
Dr. Kite can make all your dreams come true… The love of your life, getting over a divorce…and it’s all done with a little chip implanted in your body. Sounds easy, and too good to be true. Mind control chips to give you what you want. Sounds scary to me. An intriguing story about an alternative “medical” treatment to give you your dreams. Or are they nightmares?
Alterations was a very interesting read, while Sci/fi isn’t usually my thing I really enjoyed this short read. While alterations was a short read Jane Suen was able to pack a lot of information into her pages and developed her characters well. Her characters are so well developed and the story so intriguing that you’ll find yourself quickly devouring this book in one sitting. Ms. Suen gives us so much mystery, and drama that she will keep you guessing until the very end. So if your looking for a Sci/fi filled with great characters, mystery, drama and more then you should read Ms. Suen’s Alterations.
This is a very interesting book. It’s very fasted paced. I like how each invidial women is portrayed. I like how each of these women become strong I hope their is more enegament in the next book to deepen the characters.
Gigi, Ellen and Lilly each have a problem which they want to fix so they visit Dr. Kite.
Alterations is the first book in the alterations trilogy by Jane Suen. This is the story of three women desperate to change their lives and Dr. Kite who has an implant for the job. I loved this book and it also terrified me. It’s so frightening to think of the things technology can do or will be able to do in the future, and this book takes you to a world where technology can change everything. I got lost in the words of this book and into this world and before I knew it the book was over. Thankfully though there are two more books.
WOW! This quick read had my mind reeling from the story of the three women Ms. Suen based her first novel in this series on. I don’t know what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn’t to sit down and finish this book in one sitting, however, there was no way that I was putting it down before I did. There was definitely a dystopian sort of feel to the book, though I wish they sort of built up the world in which the characters live more. I found myself most drawn to Ellen, rather than Gigi and Lilly, being that she had struggled her whole life with self-confidence, her weight, and not feeling ‘right’ in her own skin. The author does a phenomenal job of building the characters up, in a short period of time, so you connect with all four, and really want to know more, and more, and MORE. I am very excited to read ‘Game Changer,’ and see what Dr. Kite has in store for us next time. Would recommend reading this series, for sure!
This is a medical game of Russian Roulette with chip implants. Who got the defective ones? Gigi, Ellen and Lily all think Dr. Kite can solve their problems with a magical cure but it seems that everything comes with a price…and maybe not all is as it seems. A quick read but a nice intense read. The characters remind me of a medical drama (which I love) so I personally can’t wait to read more. Dr. Kite is just the right kind of psycho creepy. Don’t mind me ladies, I have an office in most secluded area downtown. I have goosebumps thinking about it. Highly recommend! Must read!
I really enjoyed this story. It is an interesting concept about a microchip being able to change our lives for the better or the worst.
Gigi, Lilly and Ellen all went to Dr Kite for help. Gigi needed help with a medical condition, Ellen wanted help losing weight and Lilly needed help staying young and overcoming her divorce.
Dr Kite helped all 3 women, however Dr Kite isn’t a real doctor and what none of them realise is the consequences of the chips. Sometimes getting what you want in life isn’t worth consequences.
Alterations by Jane Suen is the first book in the Alterations Trilogy. This is a brilliant book that focuses on the old adage of be careful what you wish for. What I loved most about this book is that fact that it isn’t too far removed from reality. You can so easily imagine this type of scenarios being exactly where society is headed. Because of that I thought it was so easy to connect with the story. Although it was a pretty quick read you become invested in the characters and everything that happens to them. As the start of a series this is a strong opening. It has definitely piqued my interest and I cannot wait to read the next books.
I picked up this book as the story interested me with different characters and I was curious how it would come about as the story progressed.
No questions asked, right from the start, I was more than intrigued. I related to the women of the novel called Ellen, Lilly, and Gigi. All of them had truly different desires and wanted a change and a chance to be happy. This basically from the moment head first intrigued me. The desires were so common as I feel a lot of us feel this every day. One lady wanted to be thinner and her personal body appearance bothered her. Another went through a time in her life where she got divorced and she was unhappy in life and desired to feel joys of living her life again. And last, but the least, the 3rd woman is suffering from a medical illness and she strongly desired to beat it.
All 3 women I found to be very likeable characters and defiantly very relatable. I found myself rooting for them right when I learning about the aspects of their characters.
Dr. Kite, the is the doctor who says he can help them reach their dreams and desires. To be right from is introduction, I was getting the strong vibes he is a doctor mad with power…but how far does that power go? The ladies of this novel wanted their happiness and didn’t care the cost, as they truly thought was there to help them reach their inner motives to be happy.
Sadly, as I would expect, these desires and happiness the ladies wanted come with a price. And it turned out to have dire consequences…probably more than and me as well would expect truly! The book was a very fast read, and the author kept the suspense raised up high. I honestly didn’t want to put it down. I found there was no pages of filling in with info to carry the story alone. I found every page connected to the one before and the page after it, I hung on to the pages to see what would happen.
Its gripping and will suck you in to say the least. When I got to ending, it was indeed a suspenseful cliff hanger. Now I desperately need to read and get my hands on the rest of the series
I’m so glad I came across this novel and read this this book, and plus now I have a new author I can adore and await more novels from 🙂
Honestly pick this book up and read it. Its different and original. The story progresses in ways I did not expect or was prepared for. Its visionary it unfolds is strikingly suspenseful, you will only regret not reading this sooner.
Well done to this gifted author 🙂
To paraphrase the book description, “Gigi, Ellen, Lilly… three women so desperate to change their lives that they turn to the mysterious Dr. Kite, who offers them an implant that can control their mind.”
Three women’s lives come together with Dr. Kite, who has a quick-fix for each of these three women’s short comings. Gigi, Ellen, and Lilly are determined to change and better themselves as human beings. Each women has a different short-coming; a different end-goal. Gigi has a mysterious disease. Ellen has issues with her weight. And Lilly, who is unhappy after a terrible divorce, is looking for eternal youth. And Dr. Kite has one simple solution for all of their problems! A microchip that will help? What could go wrong?
I love how the author, Jane Suen, leads you into the three women’s characters lives and problems separately. There are three different story lines that somehow tie into one plot. I love the perspective of each individual character and how their lives develop throughout.
I cannot wait to read the second book!
This is a very engaging and thought provoking read. What risks would you take to be able to instantly perfect any issues you have with your physical or mental health? That’s what Dr. Kite has offered these three women. We follow the main characters, each with their own personal demons, as what they hoped was a quick fix backfires on them.
The best part of this book is that I connected with each of the characters. Dr. Kite, although a mite evil, is a man driven by passion. Gigi has been suffering from a debilitating disease, Ellen has weight problems, and Lilly is miserable after her divorce. Who could blame them for choosing to accept Dr. Kites solution? Would you? That’s the question that stays in the back of your mind while reading this.
Although it’s a deep subject, the tone is light and easy to follow. This is part of a trilogy, leaving you on a bit of a cliffhanger and ready to pick up the next book. Alterations is definitely worth your time.
The book follows the lives of three women, Ellen, Gigi and Lilly whom all turn to Dr. Kite who can solve their problems. But how will things turn out to be? That’s the mystery that keeps you reading until the end. This is a fast-paced and exciting book and it felt like watching a TV show. There’s no excess baggage in this story, every word, every connection is crucial, precise and to the point. The author has a unique writing style that will keep you reading, not a boring moment in here.
Alterations is a short yet exciting psychological story. It’s a reminder that a quick fix is usually not the best course of action. What’s the old saying? If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. The author gives us a very interesting concept. It is well written with well developed characters. I look forward to reading more from this author.
Careful what you wish for
A science fiction story where the lives of three different women are altered by Dr. Kite, ajusting not only their health, but their personalities.
Helping and hurting is on a very fine line. I was really interested in the concept and despite how short the story was it has the potential to expand into a series. A break from my usual reads and a good one.
Alterations by Jane Suen is an interesting short sci fi tale and is readable in one go. The story line is full of suspense and mystery. The story is told in multiple POV’s which gives us the readers a better understanding of what the characters think, why they do what they do. Like our good doctor, Dr Kite. Is he a genius or is he Dr Frankenstein? Is he clever or is he crazy? And just what is he doing to people?
Alterations (Alterations trilogy book 1) by Jane Suen 4 Stars
This was a really interesting book. This is my first book by Jane Suen and I’m looking forward to reading the next two books in the trilogy. This book is short and read more like a novella. I would put this book into the category of science fiction. This book is about Dr. Kite wanting to change the practice of medicine. He never really got his medical degree but wanted to change how people sought after medical treatment. He created a series of three types of microchips to be inserted into the patient. Red, blue , and purple label mind controlling chips. One is for healing illness or injury, one to lose weight, and one to reverse aging. He found three subjects to test them on. Gigi who had tinnitus, Lilly who wasted her best years on a guy who divorced her after using her, and Ellen who was tired of being overweight her whole life. They got their wishes, but what price were they willing to pay? They all kept this secret from their loved ones. Was the complications worth their wisecracking true?
This book was nothing that I expected. It was a little hard to follow at times due to the lack of details. I hope the second book in the series fills in all the blanks and answers the long list of questions I have after reading this story. I’m not a huge reader of science fiction, but I don’t regret taking the chance by reading this book. I am excited to see what the next two books have in store!
Alterations by Jane Suen
Four Stars
We have three people lives being altered by one man. Through his experiments Dr. Kite has made a chip to keep you healthy and tracked. He has ultimately adjusted their personalities as well. You don’t get much background on the characters or how they came to have their chips. The story starts with a bang though. I liked the idea of this story I just wish there was more details. The thought that you could just disappear and no one knows where you are is so scary. Being able to track someone important to you would be awesome. I felt bad for Dr. Kite but also felt he needed to be in some institute. His need to control and chip people at random was out of control and he is helping but also hurting many.
The story starts with a bang. A car driving at full speed towards a concrete wall, mysterious operatives cleaning up after the crash. As the mystery unfolds, we follow the life of three women irreparably altered by reckless experimentation. Be prepared for a short and fast-paced page turner you’ll probably be able to read in a single setting.
