EvaThe world dulled when you decided the fate of my future. Our son speaks of you as a superhero, and I grapple with the idea I wasn’t good enough to keep you here, safe—with us. I spend my days working to support our son, and my nights turn into one endless string of reckless decisions because reality provides no comfort. The truth of the situation buried deep down, since you’re gone, and I … gone, and I stand drowning in my own grief.
Reece
Along the shore, there’s a lady whose torment captured me the first time her aura caught my eye. Her beauty holds steady behind the mask she wears every morning. Something about her piques my interest as the days go by, and I know deep inside my mission beckons to uncover her secret and bring her back among the living. Written in her body language, speaks a familiar road I traveled. A road of sorrow nobody deserves stranded alone in its strangled web.

One of my most favorite recommendations given to me. Reece and Eva have such a beautiful tragic story to tell you. The amount of healing and loving in this story makes you feel whole again.

A new author to me and this certainly won’t be the last book I read of hers. It’s a personal reflection of a woman’s grief stricken journey, due to her husband and the father of her young son committing suicide. There isn’t a wrong or a right way for how we deal with the tragedy of losing a loved one. For some it’s an easier path, many find their way after a struggle, whilst others never find the inner peace they desperately require. It was a well written book, a realistic and believable storyline, with fascinating characters. The author gave enough depth and description to make you believe you knew these characters. She included all the emotions of grief, extreme despair and sadness, anger, guilt, self doubt, self destruction and the…if only I? It’s not pretty, it’s a truth, there’s nothing to be proud of, in fact at times it was the opposite, embarrassment and shame were present. Eva’s journey was akin to being lost in the wilderness, without any of the tools to be found. She fell and scraped her knees, she took wrong turns and she didn’t accept the help being offered until…Reece saw her and I mean the woman hidden below the layers. He has his own baggage and has an uncanny ability to see Eva’s reactions before she does. As if he was taming a wild mare who’s protective of her foal, to trust you, some days she took steps toward him and others she reared up and took backward steps.
I want to say this is a story about healing and finding love after a tragedy but it’s so much more. The book with Eva in a swirl of hurt, anger, confusion and escape mode trying to deal with her husband’s suicide what adds another element is that it’s not just her, she has a young son needing is remaining parent to be present. One night stands, drinking to forget is getting her no answers but she has too many unanswered questions to come up for air. A young buck that shows interest couldn’t understand her problems, he’s legal, right? Even with her tight circle of support Eva spins out of control until the young buck pushes back. Reece has seen more than most, dealt with a lot and probably dished out more! For him, he felt the connection at first sight, maybe drawn to the sadness he sees in this beautiful woman, knowing he wants to pull her out of the dark bleakness and back into the light. Well written story dealing with picking up the pieces, realigning them and living again after an unexpected death of a loved one, the feels, emotions and confusion is really felt through eyes of the ones going through the motions of living.
This is a must read book. The story is well written and takes you on a heartbreaking journey of the pain people suffer when a loved one dies from suicide or an accident.
I’m not sure where to begin. This book was just so well written. So many emotions and feelings. Maggie Jane Schuler does an excellent job of bringing those emotions and feelings out in her characters. Along the Shore follows Eva from In the Surf. Her spiral into self hatred and loathing after her husband’s suicide, and her battle in finding acceptance of Byron’s choice and how to move on and live her life to its fullest for not only herself but her son as well. Eventually, finding peace, contentment and a happily ever after. I love that other characters from previous books made appearances in this story as well. A quote from this book that I especially liked is, ” Life plays by different rules.” This is such a great book, one that I will read over and over.
Heart wrenching, yet beautiful!!
Maggie Jane Schuler has such a talent to describe heartbreaking, life changing events in such a powerful way that you feel you are in the heads of those experiencing the situations. The words just flow over the pages, highlighting emotions of anger, frustration, self doubt, guilt and love, along with all of the insecurities that come along with what Eva had to deal with and are brought to life in this wonderful story. I loved reading about Chase and Jenna their growing family from another of Maggie’s books, Resurrection here too.
This is an amazing book, highlighting the deepest emotions those left behind can experience when a loved one chooses to end their lives. Highly, highly recommended!
JUST WOW!!! Maggie has written another absolutely beautiful story with heartbreak and angst that pulls at your heartstrings.
After losing the love of her life to suicide, Eva spirals down into a dark depressed place where her decisions and life choices are making a negative and dangerous impact in her life.
Reece is her saving grace…. he’s wiser than his 23 years and he will do what ever he can to bring Eva back to life.
This story is very touching, dealing with how to let go and move on after being left behind.
I loved this book and highly recommend it
This is a sensitive subject as it is about the family and friends who are left behind after a suicide. It is beautifully written. Although this review is for Along the Shore, I think it’s important to point out the prequel. It doesn’t have to be read but if you do it will give you the insight into Eva’s troubles.
The prequel, In the Surf, focuses on the best friend, Liam. How he sifts through the immediate aftermath, questioning how he missed the signs leading up to his best friends suicide.
The new release, Along the Shore, is Eva’s (the widow) story. How tries she live after her husband is gone. Her own depression and anger is her worst enemy, causing her to act out and lose herself in the process.
Mental illness touches all of us whether we know it or not. It’s too wide spread to think otherwise.
Both books are about healing the hurt left behind after a loved one ends their life.
I ugly cried while reading the prequel as much as I rejoiced when Eva begins to heal.
This book hits you in the feels department from page one. A great story, and keeps you turning the pages.
