I get an invite to the mysterious Blackwell Academy two weeks after I almost die… I want to ignore it, but it promises too much. Like a scholarship. Access to Ivy League Schools. The best education. But when I get there, it’s not just a regular academy. It’s imbued with dark magic. Magic I apparently have now, thanks to that near-death experience. Brady Huntington is supposed to show me around, …
Brady Huntington is supposed to show me around, but the guy is a Grade-A douchebag. But then he winds up dead – for real this time.
Now, I need to figure out what happened to him because I’m the prime suspect – as if I wasn’t isolated enough as a scholarship student. Not just that, but I am afraid he won’t be the last.
One-click the first in this paranormal romance academy trilogy perfect for fans of Bella Forrest and Meg Xuemei X.

I read the synopsis to this book and found it intriguing since it fits my favorite types of books to read. I was really looking forward to finding out more about Blackwell Academy and the magic that can be found there. It reminded me of an Xmen type of story, but instead of mutants, it’s students with supernatural powers. I also got a little bit of a Twilight vibe as well.
Anastasia has a near death experience and wakes up with abilities that she never dreamed were possible. She gets invited to a fancy school with a very unique set of staff and students. She meets a few interesting characters, not all of them that nice to her, and then someone dies. She gets blamed and wants to find out what really happened. While trying to figure everything out, she ends up drawn to the one guy she’s told to stay away from. He can’t seem to stay away from her either. Another death occurs and of course, she seems like the possible suspect again. What is really going on? Are any of her new friends connected? Should she tell her parents everything that is going on, and will they accept her knowing that she is no longer a normal human being anymore?
A few crazy twists occur and she no longer knows exactly who she can trust. When she learns the truth about everything, including her ever developing abilities, she’ll have to make a really important decision that will affect everyone around her.
I did enjoy the story, and would like to read the next book to see where this is all going, since I feel like I’m left hanging at the end of this particular book.
However, I do feel that the characters were slightly underdeveloped. I feel like there are a few minor plot holes, but perhaps everything will be explained more in the next few books in the series. I do think that it has the potential to be a good series if this is all fixed in the next book.

Bad things happen when you don’t follow the rules.
Anastasia finds this out the hard way when she goes out with Michael. Getting an invite to a prestigious school after her accident is the best thing she could have hoped for……. until it’s not. Powers aren’t always what they seem. Hopefully Anastasia can figure things out, and fast.
The characters could have used a little bit more development, but overall a great story. I can’t wait to find out what happens to Anastasia and Desmond next.
Overall rating: 4.5
When you don’t follow the rules just one time, and your entire world gets turned upside down. Love this take on after life or rather near death…and actually even that isn’t accurate. It’s the title of the book…that is about as close to accurate as it gets. Book one did its job. Great characters led me by the nose down this unique academy book and even though I could semi predict little things, the main focus is still an unanswered mystery. Love it and already have book 2 loaded! All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
Anastasia has a near death experience that results in her gaining supernatural powers. She is invited to an elite school to help her learn to channel her powers. While there she gets caught up in murders and a secret society.
This was reaaaallly not my kind of story. Conceptually, it sounds amazing. But the execution… not so great. I honestly didn’t care about any of the characters. They were two dimensional and didn’t seem to grow at all throughout the entire novel.
Plus, the plot was not fully fleshed out. There was random information thrown in here and there that was never really explained. So much was happening and yet, nothing was happening.
All in all, I just needed this fleshed out so much more.
