Winner of the Pulitzer Prize A New York Times Book Review Top Ten Book* A National Book Award finalist * From Anthony Doerr, the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning author of Cloud Cuckoo Land, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World … France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.
Marie-Laure lives in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where her father works. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.
In a mining town in Germany, Werner Pfennig, an orphan, grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find that brings them news and stories from places they have never seen or imagined. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments and is enlisted to use his talent to track down the resistance. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another.
Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Ten years in the writing, a National Book Award finalist, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).

One of my favorite books. And a story that will stay with you. I would recommend and encourage any to enjoy this novel!
The writing is exquisite and the characters come to life. While I agree with the readers who thought the ending terrible, what turned me off was the author dispensing with what should have been a gratifying climactic scene – implicitly promised throughout the novel – in a few pages that fell flat. When the author develops narrative of two …
The writing is an inspiration. It’s not just words. It is written as prose,, a gift to all who care about the beauty of language.
Wonderful story and interesting.
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time……
This book ranks as good literature. Beautifully written! The action includes some unexpected twists that will keep your attention.
So beautifully written…
Loved this book – great story line!
One of the best novels of the decade
I loved the book!!!
I keep telling everyone to read this book! I learned so much about World War II but from a unique perspective. It helped me think about the lives of the every day people in Europe long after I had finished the book. Great building up to the climax. You know the characters will meet but you just don’t know how.
Beautiful story of survival and love.
Wonderful book,highly recommend
I like reading about WWII and this is a great story from that time. You will remember this book for a long time.
One of my favorite all time books that I have recommended to many.
Beautifully written book. Loved it.
Brilliant! Imagine seeing the world through the eyes of someone who can’t see. The bravery depicted in this novel is inspiring and reminds us that to complain about our own problems in today’s world is inconsequential compared to the tragedy of occupied France and the heroes of WWII. I was stunned.
I love any book that takes place during WWII. This book put an original spin on things with it’s unique characters and storyline! Loved it from beginning to end!
Everyone should read this book.
Good book but also sad
