Winner of the Pulitzer Prize A New York Times Book Review Top Ten Book* A National Book Award finalist * From Anthony Doerr, the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning author of Cloud Cuckoo Land, the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World … France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II.
Marie-Laure lives in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where her father works. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.
In a mining town in Germany, Werner Pfennig, an orphan, grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find that brings them news and stories from places they have never seen or imagined. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments and is enlisted to use his talent to track down the resistance. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another.
Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Ten years in the writing, a National Book Award finalist, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).

One of my favorites in the historical fiction/ WW II genre. Read it!! Such an imaginative story!
A fairly interesting book but a little disorienting with the tiny chapters, constant shifting between the main characters, and all of the time jumps. I think the story could have been more engaging with a longer focus on each character.
This is an excellent book with two story lines that merge at the end. Its very tragic and heart wrenching but worth reading it and the compassion that I felt is long lasting-helped me understand both sides of the WW2 characters in the story.
The author’s imagery is expertly crafted throughout this exploration of love, cruelty, and fear in a time of war. The details are so vivid it’s like watching a movie in 3D.
The best book I ever read.

When I first started reading this book it took me a bit to figure out the rhythm of the back and forth between characters as well as time, but before long I was completely hooked. Marie Laure and Werner are unforgettable. Highly recommend this book.
Beautifully written. A book you will not forgot long after you have finished it.
Beautiful, unique story that kept me engrossed from beginning to end. If you’re looking for the next book on your nightstand, a story to tuck you in for a while, this is the book! Wonderful father-daughter love story.

Thought provoking. Made you question the decisions you would make
Spectacular story. Wonderfully captivating. I loved it. Could not stop thinking about it after I read it. Best book I read in 2018.
Deserved all its awards
Absolutely a wonderful book – must read
To slow not enough information to get into the story.
One of my favorites in past five years. WWII from two children’s perspectives in a whirlwind of terrifying experiences of loss, family trauma and intrigue.
Doerr deftly tells the very different and separate stories of a blind French girl and a German boy during World War ii. The two characters don’t come together until the final pages of the novel. What resonated for me was how so many wartime participants get involved for reasons other than political allegiance. Werner wants to become an engineer …
Great WWII historical fiction!
