The 16th novel by #1 bestselling author Louise Penny finds Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec investigating a sinister plot in the City of LightOn their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand’s godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and … knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man’s life.
When a strange key is found in Stephen’s possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d’Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art.
It sends them deep into the secrets Armand’s godfather has kept for decades.
A gruesome discovery in Stephen’s Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized.
Soon the whole family is caught up in a web of lies and deceit. In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past. His own family.
For even the City of Light casts long shadows. And in that darkness devils hide.

All the Devils Are Here by Louise Penny is the 16th Chief Inspector Armand Gamache novel. For me this was actually my first Gamache novel and it stood alone pretty well.
This story sees the Chief Inspector in Paris for the birth of his granddaughter. While visiting the Chief Inspector and his family find themselves in the middle of a hit and run and then a subsequent murder. The book follows as the Chief Inspector and his son-in-law and former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir investigate the cases.
Overall I really enjoyed the story and found myself engrossed with the plot. As someone with a limited knowledge of French, I did find it a little difficult to keep track of all of the characters because of the number of characters and the French names. I suspect that this is a case where I might have benefited from going back and forth between the audiobook and printed book.
Overall though I really enjoyed the mystery and think it would appeal to those who enjoy classic mysteries.
NARRATION: I think the narrator did a good job with the narration. While I might get some of the characters confused, that had way more to do with my brain not doing a good job distinguishing between the French names as anything else. I do think the narrator was able to capture the emotions of the moments and bring them to life.
I grab every Gamache mystery as they come out, and always expect to enjoy the read. This one didn’t disappoint, and in fact had me guessing until the very end. And what an ending. Really good stuff.
Louise Penny has done it again. Though I did miss the Three Pines character, I enjoyed the family drama and a little Paris. I do hope we go back to Quebec in the next one though!
Louise Penny has outdone herself in this latest installment of her series. In this story her team is in Paris and the focus is on family, trust and broken relationships — and one of the most complex webs of corporate greed with one man’s willingness to sacrifice everything to stop it.
It took me so much time to finish this book not because it wasn’t good but it wasn’t for me, the story really never hook me up, I was lost constantly and I tried to put all my attention to get into the story they were so many characters and I had a hard time keeping up who was who or what background they had. again the story is good but it wasn’t for me.
All the Devils Are Here is book number 16 on the series, you don’t really need to read the other books to get into this story. many different scenarios and characters that bring to life this story, mystery, and a very complex plot that will entertain you and keep you wanting more.
The Narrations by Robert Bathurst was great giving so much depth to Gamache’s character as well as other characters in the story. I feel like his voice was the one that keeps me going and interested in the story.
Overall it was a good book, characters, story, mystery, intriguing situations, drama everything was there to make this book a great read, I encourage you to read it, listen to it, and give it a try.
A new and very welcome twist on an established series. Storyline moved from rural Quebec to Paris, France, where the reader is exposed to the fascinating history and relationships between the”well-known” principal characters. The plot was full of twists and turns and kept you guessing until the end.
PENNY’S BEST BOOK YET
Stunning!
Louise Penny is at the top of her game. The latest Gamache is beautiful, thoughtful, and riveting.
One of her best!
All the Devils Are Here, #16 by Louise Penny is the best Inspector Gamache novel yet! Of course, I say that about most of the books in this series. I listened to the audio book narrated by Robert Bathurst, whose voice is perfect for this story of intrigue and suspense. These characters feel like friends and the threads of their lives are important to the story and to me. I was so delighted to see some resolution in one particular relationship. Such a great read!
I am never disappointed by Louise Penny’s books, and this one is no exception. It’s a mystery, a thriller, and a keen study of father-son relationships that culminates in a shoot-out that honestly made my jaw drop. Another excellent addition to the iconic Inspector Gamache series.
It was great to see our favorite characters in a new environment, but it will be equally great to see them back in Three Pines soon.
This book is the best story so far by Louise Penny. I lived in Montreal 14 years so I understand the history ad mystery of the province of Quebec and areas such the Eastern Townships and Quebec city. I have read every Gamache story so far. I love Louise Penny’s writing. I would highly recommend this book.
Love all of her books, this one was different not in 3 pines village but in Paris France. Kept me guessing the whole book. Surprise ending .
In Louise Penny’s latest novel, All the Devils Are Here, (Minotaur) Armand Gamache, Chief Inspector of Homicide for the Sûreté du Quebec, is in dire need of a vacation to Paris. It will be a chance to reconnect with his ex-pat children, revisit his childhood haunts and celebrate the arrival of his newest granddaughter. However, after fifteen novels, dedicated readers know that murder and intrigue are as inseparable from Armand’s life as the Eiffel Tower is from Paris. Thrilling, pacey, and action-packed!
In this latest novel by Penny, All the Devils Are Here, we head to Paris, France where Chief Inspector Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec and his extended family will find themselves uncovering long-buried family secrets, examining the inner workings of a company with suspicious intentions, and inadvertently investigating the murder of an engineer and the attempted murder of one of their own.
The prose is sharp and crisp. The characters are intuitive, loyal, and dependable. And the plot, including all the subplots, intertwine and unravel seamlessly into an engrossing tale of secrets, deception, familial drama, manipulation, corruption, greed, violence, and murder.
All the Devils Are Here is the sixteenth novel in the Chief Inspector Gamache series and whether it’s small-town mayhem, big-city crime, or newsworthy headlines it’s always an absolute indulgence and pleasure to sit back, open the cover and immerse yourself once more in an intricate mystery perfectly befitting this humanly flawed, intelligent, steadfast character who you can’t help but root for.
fits very well in the complete series — the theme keeps on developing from book to book
Another wonderful book by Louise Penny. I have read every book she has written, this may be the best one yet.
Highly recommend this Author.
Each book in this series has been amazing and this was no exception. This book is set in Paris, where Armand and Rene Marie are awaiting the birth of their grand child. Armand’s godfather, Stephen Horowitz, is there also for the birth. They have all been there many times and the descriptions of the streets and the places that they visit make you feel like you are seeing it with your own eyes and experiencing it yourself. Of course, there is a mystery that is very well plotted that takes the reader into unexpected places. Armand, and the reader, are unsure what is true and what is not, and who he can trust. This book kept me on the edge of my seat! Louise Penny’s writing is so engrossing and the narrator of this audio book was excellent. I can’t wait for the next book in this wonderful series.
I received a complimentary copy of this audio book from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I feel like Rip Van Winkle. How did I miss this author and this wonderful series for so long. Beautifully written.
