I loved this book which is a great follow up to the first one in the series. It was well-written with well-rounded characters, some of whom you’ll like and others you won’t. I was drawn in from the beginning and didn’t want to put the book down. I’m really looking forward to more from this series and highly recommend both book and series which I suggest you read in order for the most enjoyment and benefit.
Love this new series – Many twists and turns and surprises – love it when I can think “I did not see that coming’ !!! It feels as though many of her other series’ are blending into this one!! Sheer pleasure to read about North and Sierra & what pulls them together!! If you have never read the Arcane Society books – start with the 1st and you will be hooked!!!

ALL THE COLORS OF NIGHT opens with an enticing scene, as Sierra Raines is being apologized to by her client for being about to kill her. The client is unaware that Sierra has multiple psychic abilities, including one power which allows her to render the would-be murderer unconscious as she makes her escape. Sierra’s current vocation is acting as an agent, or, go-between, delivering artifacts between buyers and sellers. Sierra’s last job had her being the scapegoat for a scandal at that firm, one of many unsuccessful career choices, as she struggles to find her true calling. She is also able to read people’s auras, or energy fields, as well as having the ability to read emotions left on objects. When Sierra is offered a side job which involves hunting down some missing valuable artifacts, she eagerly accepts the opportunity to earn the additional income.
North Chastain’s successful career as a tracker of psychic criminals is about to come to an end, as he is suffering from a malady which is slowly draining him of his own psychic talent. In addition to the devastating approaching loss of his talent, he also wonders at his own sanity, as he sees and hears visions of ghostlike figures. North’s grandfather, Griffin, a renowned scientist and magician, was accused of being a traitor decades ago, and of selling government secrets to the enemy. He has never been seen again, and it’s assumed he was either killed or chose to vanish into the enemy country. North never believed that his grandfather was a traitor, and is now living in his house in Vegas. Now North’s own father has been mysteriously injured, and this all seems to tie in somehow to his grandfather, and missing artifacts. North still trusts in his own investigative ability, even if his paranormal powers are dwindling, and he immediately begins to try to solve the mystery, hiring Sierra to help him find the missing items.
As the new partners begin to work on tracking down the objects, it’s not long before Sierra realizes that North is neither going insane nor losing his ability. Rather, someone is actually planning a sinister attack on him in a most diabolical way. Sierra uses her own ability to help stabilize North, while not revealing that he is recovering, hoping to find the person or people who wanted him rendered harmless. North’s admiration for Sierra only adds to the desire he had already been feeling for her, but Sierra mistakes his feelings for gratitude, which she wants no part of. When a dangerous encounter leaves them full of adrenaline, they turn to each other with a steamy passion that shocks them with its intensity.
North and Sierra seem to fit together, both as partners and lovers. Their investigation takes them down treacherous paths, where they face danger of the physical and psychic variety. My favorite thing about reading a novel by Jayne Ann Krentz is that I know that two things will always be true – the hero will always respect the heroine and treat her accordingly, and the heroine will always be intelligent and able to see beyond the obvious. North and Sierra share so much in common – their psychic ability, their feeling of not fitting in, their unsatisfying romantic past, their seeking of their true career niche, and even being tainted by false accusations. I love their developing love for each other, and how everything seemed to fall into place, assuring me that their future together is solid. I read ALL THE COLORS OF NIGHT in one sitting, not wanting to put it down, as the suspense aspect is as captivating as the romance. This book two of the Fogg Lake series can be read as a standalone, but I do recommend book one, THE VANISHING, as a great introduction to the history of Fogg Lake and its unique inhabitants. I’m totally enjoying this series, and believe ALL THE COLORS OF NIGHT will appeal to readers who enjoy a fast paced story with a satisfying blend of romance and suspense.
Another hit by one of my favorite authors! If you like paranormal, romance and mysteries to solve, this series is for you!
I am a huge fan of Jayne Ann Krentz books and this book does not disappoint. It is action packed and full of adventure. I lost myself in her world. In excellent read that has made me want to go back and read all of her books that I own.
I’ve been reading Krentz in all her pseudonyms for years. She is one of the best authors/storytellers I follow. I really like her writing (except for maybe a few early ones). I really like this series and all the paranormal series she does. Loved the characters and the plot of this book. I don’t do a synopsis of books I read but I will tell you if you like paranormal, mystery, suspense, romance, this is the book and author for you. The next book can’t come quick enough.
All the Colours of the Night is my favourite genre – romantic suspense with a paranormal vibe and not a werewolf or vampire in sight. Jayne Ann Krentz has created a world of psychic investigators where nothing is what it seems and a person’s aura can tell their story but only if you know how to read it.
North Chastain’s family has laboured under the cloud of his grandfather’s alleged treason. With a talent that makes him an exceptional tracker he spends his time hunting down the monsters who would use their psychic ‘gifts’ to harm the innocent. Now his father has been struck down by a mysterious ailment he has to delve into the world of obsessive artifact collectors with the help of Sierra Raines, to the locate the weapon used before it’s too late to save his father. Matters escalate when he realises events of the past may be playing a larger part in current events.
I really enjoyed this page turner of a book. It grabbed my attention from the start. The plot moved at a fast pace and each scene was described so vividly it was easy for me to picture it playing out in my head as I was reading. It did seem a little complex at times but once I got caught up in the story it flowed really well. The characters are well written and both had their strengths and weaknesses in their own right making them well balanced. I loved that North was willing to place his trust in Sierra when it came to his issues with his talent even though at that point they barely knew each other. Normally this instant trust between characters would jar with me but in this case, perhaps because their connection is so believable, it seemed natural. I also loved the throw away mention of the Arcane Society which has now made me want to go and re-read this series.
“Paranormal secrets, revenge and a mad scientist. All in a day’s work for a couple of psychics.”
Jayne Ann Krentz created the world of Fogg Lake (motto: Nothing to see here) where long ago the government conducted secret psychic experiments. As Jayne says, “What could possibly go wrong?” All the Colors of Night is entertaining, action-filled, and is a guaranteed satisfying read with smart, humorous, decent characters who we know will win in the end. Enjoy All the Colors of Night.
Have you missed the Jones family and the arcane? Then try out the Fogg Lake series.
All The Colors of Night by Jayne Ann Krentz is the 2nd book in her Fogg Lake series. Refresher: 40 years ago in the small town of Fogg Lake, an explosion caused various paranormal effects on many of the residents; such as visions, auras and other unique abilities. The community kept to itself, not revealing anything about those strange effects; leaving the town bare of updated mechanics, such as wifi, computers, cell phones, as the dense fog blocked those signals.
We meet our heroine, Sierra Raines, at the start, when she finds herself in a dangerous situation, with a client threatening to kill her; but with some of her paranormal ability to use mirrors, she was able to escape. Sierra is a psychic expert on artifacts, working for a firm that trades those artifacts, as she finds and delivers them, since she is one of the best in her field.
North Chastain, our hero, also has paranormal ability as a ‘cleaner’ for The Foundation, tracking down bad psychic criminals. North has recently begun to worry that he is losing his powers, as his specialty for seeing psi lights has suddenly gone wacky. When North’s father is attacked and in a psychic induced coma, he suspects that someone is determined to find a dangerous artifact in the secret Fogg Lake lab 40 years ago; in order to save his father, he asks and is given Sierra to help him find the artifact. At first, North isn’t sure Sierra can be trusted, but in a short time he realizes how good she is and together they make a great team. Right from the start, Sierra discovers that those glasses North wears has some bad paranormal effects and tells him this is why his powers are going away. Over time, she does come through helping him often, and North begins to find himself falling for her, as Sierra is smart, brave and a bad ass, not to mention beautiful.
They will learn that the man who attacked North’s father was part of a psychiatric institution, forcing experiments on people with little paranormal ability. As they get closer to finding the truth, the trail leads North and Sierra to Fogg Lake, where they discover the lab, where his grandfather worked leaving hidden clues and artifacts. Who is behind the attacks and threats on their lives?
What follows is an exciting, intense, action filled adventure, with many twists and turns. North and Sierra were a wonderful couple and a great team. It was nice to see their romance build; especially as they were able to save each other numerous times. To tell too much more would be spoilers. All The Colors of the Night is a fast-paced suspenseful mystery thriller, with supernatural elements that add to the storyline. Jayne Ann Krentz once again gives us another wonderful story in this series; which I look forward to reading the next book. If you enjoy suspense mysteries, great couple and a dose of supernatural, you need to read this new series.
I was really looking forward to this one. I read and enjoyed the first book in the series, The Vanishing and new this one was going to be just as good. Guess what, I was right! There is something about Jayne Ann Krentz’s writing that I just love. Her books are always easy to get into and I always seem to enjoy them. Always a plus.
Right from the beginning, you get a feel of the story. I knew right away that Sierra and North were going to be fun characters and that I’d like them. Both have things going on in their lives that seem to make things difficult for them. Sometimes you just need that special person that can help you.
This is a busy story but not confusing. You can easily keep up with what’s going on. As the story goes on layer and layer of the mysteries within are solved, all but the main one that runs throughout the series.
I like how both North and Sierra work out their personal issues while working together to help North’s father. I liked how the two families came together. I also enjoyed visiting with characters from The Vanishing.
This is a wonderful mystery with so many good twists and turns. It also has enough romance in it that both romance and mystery readers would enjoy it. I will mention that like most of her books there is a slight paranormal feel to it. I believe you’ll really enjoy this one. Make sure to read the books in order because it will read better.
ALL THE COLORS OF NIGHT by Jayne Ann Krentz is the second book in the Fogg Lake paranormal romantic suspense series and is set in contemporary times in Washington state and Las Vegas, Nevada. What a fantastic read! I was hooked with the first sentence. Sierra Raines was falsely accused of a con when working for a big auction house. Now she functions as a go-between by finding and transporting objects with a psychic provenance. North Chastain has a paranormal ability to track down dangerous psychic criminals. When North’s father ends up in a coma, North hires Sierra to help him track down an artifact that might save his father. What caused the coma? Does an artifact exist that can save him? Will North and Sierra be able to work together? What will they find when they investigate the dark side of the paranormal world?
Sierra and North are fantastic, but flawed protagonists. Both are smart and have past histories that haunt them. Krentz does a great job of making them multidimensional showing change and growth as the novel progresses. This is a case where the protagonists balance each other well. The secondary characters play a definite backseat role in this book, but they enhanced the story without overwhelming it.
The world-building was clear and intricate; smoothly adding paranormal aspects to contemporary times. The plot was complex with lots of twists and turns and the stakes were high. The tension and action kept me fully engaged and made this a true page turner for me.
This is a riveting story with protagonists that I could relate to, like, and cheer on as their escapades became ever more dangerous. Surprises along the way kept me guessing what would be uncovered in their journey together. Several themes run through the tale including family relationships and history, ethics, romance, murder, trust, mental health and much more.
Overall, it was an exciting, suspenseful, fast-paced and unique story that I did not want to put down. The combination of action, suspense, danger, intrigue, chemistry, romance and more kept me fully engaged. The subplots tied together well, the main characters were strong, intelligent and loyal, and the action had my heart racing. It does leave one subplot point unresolved which could be a thread in book three of the series. If you enjoy thrilling paranormal romantic suspense novels, then I highly recommend you check out this series. There is enough background that ALL THE COLORS OF NIGHT can be read as a standalone but I recommend reading them in order. I’m looking forward to book three.
Berkley Publishing Group provided a complimentary digital ARC of this novel via NetGalley and the opportunity to provide an honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way. Publication date is currently set for January 5, 2021. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.
I’m a big fan of Jayne Ann Krentz and have been for years. Her PNR-based books are some of the best romantic fiction I’ve ever read. Her newest book ALL THE COLORS OF NIGHT (Fogg Lake #2) takes us back to the eery town ( Fogg Lake) to continue solving the puzzle of what happened there decades ago.
When North Chastain’s father is attacked and put under some sort of psychic alter state, North begins investigating what happened and he partners with artifact go-between Sierra Raines to discover what a psychic artifact had to do with the issues with his father. This lead them down a twisted road of stolen artifacts, a psychiatric institution, and missing people with psychic talents.
Sierra and North are both loners, thinking their psychic talents make them unmatchable. Since this is a JAK book, you know the two of them are perfectly matched, they just need to realize it..
Once they do this book becomes so much more than the hunt for killers and stolen artifacts.
5 well deserved stars to another winner from JAK.. Thanks Netgalley for the sneak peek of another great book.
This really sould have been written under her Jayne Castle pseudonym since it has a strong sci fi element. I can see Krentz fans going “What the bleep is this???” I have read most, if not all her Castle books so I didn’t mind that.
It’s just there’s nothing really new, definitely nothing exciting or hot on the romance scale. You know who is going to get together, but you don’t feel any sparks or passion.
It was good enough to finish, but I found myself starting to skips lines just to get it over with.
Jayne Ann Krentz has done it again with another fabulous book in the Fogg Lake series!! This book grabbed my attention from page one & had such wonderful, likable main characters & supporting characters. North Chastain & Sierra Raines are working together to save his father who was attacked & now in a coma. North & Sierra are both a little lost & trying to find where their calling in life and neither have been lucky in their romantic lives. They so deserve their HEA. This book has it all action, suspense, romance, humor. You will not be disappointed!! I highly recommend this book, series & author!!
I have been reading JAK for decades under all her various aliases, though Amanda Quick is my favorite. I honestly prefer the older books, where the H and h depended on their wits and strengths, not paranormal talents, and read most of them several times. Most of her newer books all have moved into the paranormal world, but the writing style and intriguing characters have not faltered.
North Chastain’s night vision is failing, but he must find a weapon that was used on his father to save him. Sierra Raines has flit from one job to another, yet to find her calling, but presently working as finder and transporter of paranormal artifacts. They join forces to find the artifact that belonged to his grandfather, to cure his father and end up in Fogg Lake, the scene of the Incident decades ago, where they solve a mystery, leading them to find not only their true calling, but their true love.
I adore Krentz’s paranormal romance suspense novels as person has a soulmate compatible with their “special talent”.
With special skills, two psychics plunge into a dark world of deadly secrets. Twists and turns, protecting each other, these psychics find much more than they were looking for in the tunnel of Fogg Lake.
Such a delightful story. It’s Jayne Ann Krentz mark , the one that made me fall in love with her novels so many years ago.If you read her Arcane series, then you know what I’m talking about.
It’s full of suspense intertwined with mysteries and so many feelings that blooms between the characters. The felling that you know a person for a long time even if you just met her, the trust that you’re eager to give so easy, the butterflies of a new love and all the small paranormal suggestions, everything adds up for another must read from a long-time favourite author.
