Colors of my Heart
I loooove seeing James, Della, Max & Annie all together! This story does a wonderful job of showcasing how James & Max begin healing their friendship, and Della & Annie discover theirs. Such a sweet & fun read! : )
If You Ever Need Anything
We get snippets of Stacy, Janie AND Tony in this one & it’s wonderfully done! I love Janie’s nerdiness & Stacy’s protectiveness & Spook’s … well, he’s a cat, so I just love him. Great addition to have Tony’s POV & I’ve been looking forward to his story for ages (it feels like) so I’m super happy to see it’s coming soon!
Ace Up My Sleeve
I haven’t read Poker Face, so I hadn’t met Brandon & Cami yet, but their story still worked for me. They’re a super sweet & steamy couple!
The Man With the Golden Soul
This is where we learn about James & Thomas Meenan’s bond and friendship & it is AMAZING!!! I cried. It’s very emotional & beautiful & I’m looking forward to reading more of Thomas’s story!!!
Overall a great collection & I recommend reading the whole Chimera series! : )
I’m truly honored to be one of the first to review it. I’ve read the other stories in the Chimera Club series written by Cybill Cain previously and have loved every one of them. And I did read them out of order, so I can honestly say that you can do that and still enjoy the series. And I will tell you that I am going to do my best to NOT make this sound like an advertisement for the book. It really isn’t. I have found, while reading her other stories, that I like this woman’s writing, and would love to share it with everyone out there in ebook-land.
If you are going to read this book as your first book of Cybil Cain’s, don’t. Read the others first. Understand that her other books have led up to this point and that this book predates some, completes others and begins others. It also serves one HUGE mystery in the end.
I am truly over the moon (and the rainbow) that Cybill decided to write this collection of short stories that center themselves around the characters we’ve grown to love from the Chimera Club. The stories revolve around Max and Annie when they are visited by Della and James; Stacy and Janie with Tony’s peace-making; Brandon and Camille take on the scourge that is taking her mother’s mind and discover things about themselves and her family in the process; and then we have the one I, personally, have been waiting for – the story of how James Draven met the mysterious Thomas Meenan. I was SO very tempted to go to the back of the stories and read Meenan’s first, but I didn’t. Because to do that would negate what the author is saying in this group of stories. Meenan’s story was fabulous and you have to read it, because I’m NOT SAYING A WORD. I refuse to have to head this review with a warning.
One of the reasons I enjoy Cybill Cain’s writing is that there is an underlying goodness about them that can’t be denied. Right vs wrong. Good vs evil. Love vs Indifference. She has created characters who love as hard as anything they do. The women are as alpha as the males, and I love strong women in stories. It makes their decisions and actions so much more important to the story when you know their brain is firing on all its cylinders. And the other reason I love strong women is that they don’t have a fear of love and the newness that comes with it. But I also love characters who are imperfect, perhaps incomplete without the mates they seek. I want my characters to have faults, just like in real life, because that makes me love them that much more. And that’s the way these characters are constructed. And her writing style lends even more clarity to those characters in whatever situation they find themselves in.
In the end, even with the preview of Tony’s story making you want even more Cybill Cain (and yes, I’m thinking of how much of a bribe I’ll have to send to Cybill Cain to get my hands on THAT story now), you’ll come away from this series of short stories feeling great about love, and about the world. You will come away with the feeling that you’ve actually lived in the world of the Chimera Club and that in that world, love will triumph.
Oh, and she got that extra half a star because that cover is out of this world, and the cat is front and center (and we all know, put a cat, kitten, or puppy in a book, and I’ll cheerfully give you extra credit!). So in reality this is a six star review! So picture all of those stars as purple with tails, and you’ll understand how much I loved this book.
