All Scot and Bothered is the second book in the stunning Devil You Know series by USA Today bestselling author Kerrigan Byrne! They are a dangerous duke, a fierce lord, and an infamous earl–dark, bold, brave men who know exactly what they want. And there is only one woman who can bring them to their knees… He is first and foremost–at everything. A man who’s made his own way through ruthless … everything. A man who’s made his own way through ruthless cunning and sheer force of will. A strong and imposing Scot who can turn on the charm but does not suffer fools. His title: Lord Chief Justice of the High Court. His name: Cassius Gerard Ramsay. His mission: To investigate the goings-on at London’s most notorious gaming hell, owned and operated by one of the most intriguing and desirable women he’s ever met.
IN THIS GAME OF LOVE, THE RULES DO NOT APPLY
Cecelia Teague was an orphan facing a rather dire future–until a secret benefactor from her mother’s scandalous past swept into her life. Sent to a prestigious boarding school and later to university, Cecelia believed high society was at her fingertips…Then, from out of nowhere, she became the inheritor of a gambling establishment. Now Cecelia must live two lives: one as a proper lady who finds herself undeniably drawn to Lord Ramsay and the other as a savvy gaming hell owner trying to save her business from the very same man. He has no idea she is both women…and Cecelia would like to keep it that way. But what happens when consuming passion and escalating danger threaten to reveal the truth?
“With the Devil You Know series, Byrne once again delivers the beautifully nuanced characters and seductive storytelling her readers have come to expect.”–Booklist
more
This is the second of the three Devil You Know books, about the Red Rogues and the men they love.
Cecelia Teague has a soft and generous heart, despite her cold, cruel childhood. Lord Chief Justice Cassius Gerard Ramsay had a similar upbringing, but has a cold, unforgiving heart. But Cecelia has managed to melt a little corner of it, until he discovers she is the owner of a gaming hell he is trying to close, and he accuses her of many foul deeds. He realizes the error of his ways, but they still have some hurdles to get over before they can have a HEA.
I felt some echoes of Chief Inspector Carlton Morley (Victorian Rebels) in Ramsay. Hard, cold life turns a boy into a man that viciously enforces the law, protecting the vulnerable, like nobody did for them.
Cecelia is full of numbers and cyphers and could talk about them for days. But that knowledge eventually helps them unravel the mystery of who is behind the missing girls in London.
I’m looking forward to Francesca’s book next!
Rated 4.5 Stars
All Scot and Bothered was pretty good. It’s a historical romance with mystery, suspense and a bit of action. I adored it. I love repressed, prim and proper heroes and if they’re grumpy too I’m in heaven. Cassius hit all these buttons and so much more. I loved that Cecelia was shy yet also bold when she needed to be. I loved their courtship and can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

“Jesus kilt-lifting Christ.
It’s ye.” – Cassius Gerard Ramsay
1891 Devonshire England
Cecelia Teague started out in life with a deceased mother, who supposedly had an sordid past. Now her young daughter was paying for her dead mother’s so called past sins. Her innocent daughter was being horribly abused by this religious-zealot! Cecelia was paying for her mother’s so-called past sins by this corrupt pastor. He feels he needs to save her soul in the most invasive and abusive ways possible. This abusive pastor is claiming falsely to be Cecelia’s father too which is a huge lie. He punishes her, even when the boy bullies at school were abusing and tormenting Cecelia. This was no fault of her own, just more discrimination against women by this twisted Pastor claiming she was using her female feminine wiles when it was not even her fault. He wouldn’t buy her new garments as she outgrew them, degrading Cecelia by calling her fat and would continue to starve her. She was not allowed to ever eat any kind of dessert like cake. He was both mentally and physically abusing her, locking her in a dark and dirty room, starving her, not bathing, forcing her to wear garments
that no longer fit. People treated animals better then he treat this child!
She ended up being rescued by a wealthy and mysterious benefactor. This benefactor sent her to the best boarding schools and universities. This is where she eventually meets Alexandra and Francesca her two best girl friends. All three of them have ginger hair this is why the red rogues was created. Cecelia becomes a beauty that is a true bluestocking with a head for numbers. She does not discover who her benefactor is until a tragedy happens and she inherits her benefactor’s gambling establishment and Henrietta’s School for Cultured Young Ladies. It is a school for immigrant women of all ages to learn a trade so they do not end up in the workhouse or on their back. No men from the gambling establishment are permitted on the same floor as Henrietta’s School for girls. She also inherited young child who is like a little sister in everything but blood. On top of that she needs to be protected by an abusive father. Those were the only words Cecelia had to hear to seal the deal!
Cassius Gerard Ramsay, Chief Justice of the High Court. Has a very low opinion of women due to his abusive mother who ruined men as hobbie. He also felt it was because weak people gave in to their base desires. He has not slept with a woman, drank wine or eaten a piece of chocolate in seven years. He was fine with his lot in life until he met Cecelia Teague, a woman who was making him break all his vows to himself and arouse’s him like no other.
Unfortunately it is Ramsay, as the Lord Chief Justice of the High Court, who is assigned to check out this gaming hell operated by a new owner known as the Scarlet Lady. In reality it’s Cecelia, the woman he desires most in this world. She is in a disguise where he does not recognize her, wearing, wig, spectacles removed, heavy make up and a veil over her face . He believes through this gambling hell and the new owner, the scarlet lady, is responsible for missing girls and running a human trafficking operation that prey on young, teenage, immigrant, girls and are being abducted off the streets. They are are being sold and forced as sex slaves doing sexual favors for men. It is like Cecelia is two completely different people, one a shy, poor, introverted spinster and the other the sexy, wealthy, owner of this gaming hell that he wants to proving is dirty and corrupt an wants to close down! *
Now he has not figured out that it is the same woman. What will he do when he does? Will he believe he has been betrayed and Cecelia is just another unworthy woman like his mother? Is it the final betrayal? Read and find out!
Kerrigan Byrne again weaves her magic in her in new riveting, awe/inspiring page turning, masterpiece “Devil You Know” series. This is following Alexandra and Pier’s story from ( How to Love a Duke in Ten Days). Again I was holding onto every word Ms. Byrnes wrote with my heart exploding! Sometimes with laughter, shouting, cussing saying the F word, shedding a tear or two, with many sighs and gasps. It is just why I always read her books which is always exhilarating and total fun. She is one author that I know I will love without even reading the excerpt or back cover description. She has a talent for always sweeping me away in these exquisite stories that are absolutely addicting! Plus in this story this couple has a past with so much abuse and how does one rebuild again and trust. It really does a number on my readers heart! Her books will never disappoint that’s for sure. Definitely join Cecelia and Ramsay on this emotional heartstring pulling journey. Yes Ramsay is a swoon worthy hero at times you want to slap but at the same time kiss him passionately too. The smart sassy heroine you can’t help but love. Pretty perfect in my estimation but that’s me! The TV main characters and secondary characters like Phoebe you can’t help but love.
i just loved this book from start to finish and everything in between. You can of course read as a stand alone book. However if two Kerrigan Byrne books are available to read-then you are crazy not to read them in my estimation! Well that’s just me.
I received an advance readers copy from the publisher. I voluntarily agreed to do a fair review and blog through netgalley. All thoughts, ideas and words are my own.

Cecelia Teague is part of the Red Rogues. She is always the most hopeful, kind and positive. She was always bullied about how smart she was and her weight. She has come into her own. With the help of her benefactor, she had her education paid for. From the school she met Alexandria and Francesca. Mess with one and you mess with them all. Ramsey, half brother to Redmayne, was beginning to learn that. He was also known as Lord Chief Justice or the Vicar of Vice. He was on a mission to bring down the Crimson Council, who traffics in young girls. When their two worlds collide, fire works are ignited. Underneath all that is a virgin and a man who has locked down his sexuality. The spark has been lit and the explosion is amazing. But evil is trying to do them in. Ramsey’s is a Scotsman who has no problem protecting what is his. Cecelia is his and now he just has to make her see that he loves her.
Every time I read a book by Kerrigan Byrne I just think “this! THIS is why she is one of if not my favourite author”. Captivating characters, enthralling storyline and an unparalleled ability to create flawless literary worlds. Honestly, no one writes historical romances like Kerrigan Byrne.
Cecelia Teague’s life has not been easy, bullied at school for her weight and intelligence, enduring a terrible childhood at the hands of an abusive father who took his anger out on her, she’s endured much. But in spite all of that, she’s warm, gracious and filled with an abundance of love and kindness.
When her mysterious benefactor passes away, Cecelia finds herself the owner of a gaming hell/secret school for girls, a guardian to a little girl and the subject of investigation by Lord Chief Justice Ramsay aka the Vicar of Vice.
Cassius Ramsay is a man who does not indulge… in anything. After making the mistake of giving into temptation once before, Cassius has spent the past 7 years abstaining from any and all excesses and pleasures, only focusing on his work. When young girls start disappearing in London and evidence of a trafficking arises, Cassius suspects that the school is being used as a front and is hellbent on finding the missing girls and catching the culprit. Little does he know that the new owner of the establishment is Cecelia, the beguiling woman who has awakened his long dormant desires; his brother’s wife’s best friend.
I loved the connection between Cassius and Cecelia and how their romance develops. Even the hate part of their enemies to lovers story was so enjoyable, the witty repartee and the tension. They were really perfect for each other; she was the sunshine to his dark, the soft to his ruthless. But I liked that she wasn’t a push over, she was strong and passionate and stood up for herself. I adorreeeddd Jean Yves and Phoebe, their relationships with both characters enriched the story even more and gave it another dimension.
A whirlwind of angst, danger and explosive romance, this story was a masterpiece. Hands down top 5 of my favourite reads of 2020.
Francesca is up next in our Red Rogues trio and her book is out in March *fist pump*, cannot wait to see what our firecracker gets up to.
This was the first book I read by Kerrigan Byrne and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Although All Scot and Bothered is the second book in the Devil You Know series, I did not feel lost having not read the first book. Alex and Piers even show up in this story.
This book has everything you want in a great story – well-crafted characters (created lovingly with their flaws), intrigue, mathematical codes, a gaming hell, angst, a swoon-worthy hero, a heroine who doesn’t fit society’s definition of stylish, steamy romance, humor, adventure, and a lot of passion.
The three main characters of the Devil You Know series, known as the Red Rogues, formed a strong friendship while at university. They are bound by their secrets, their strength, and unwavering loyalty. After reading this book, I can’t wait to go back and read the first book. And the third book can’t come out soon enough!!
I gladly leave my unbiased opinion.
I loved this book! Cecilia is one of my favorite HR heroines I’ve read in awhile. She is curvy, something we don’t see often in HR, brilliant and I love her positive attitude. She didn’t have the best childhood and she has people around her telling her she isn’t proper enough or skinny enough but Cecilia likes herself.. which makes me love her. She is very comfortable with who she is. Ramsey is Cecilia’s best friends brother in law. He is very rigid and proper but like in a good way. He uses is rigidness for good!
I am completely obsessed with this story. I loved the plot line… but I loved the characters more. I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us.
Thank you netgalley for my early copy!
This book is what you want from a historical romance. A hero undone. A super strong heroine. A bit of adventure. I loved it. All Scot and Bothered features Cecelia and Ramsay. Cecelia has a rough start to life until an unknown benefactor comes along and changes her life. When this mysterious benefactor dies, Cecelia inherits a gaming hell and school for girls among other things. Almost immediately, Ramsay shows up at her door as he is the Chief Justice and is investigating a series of kidnappings and suspect that Cecilia has something to do with it. The two are instantly at odds..
I really enjoyed how this story played out. I love a strong heroine and Cecilia and her friends are exactly that. I have not read their stories but they are immediately going on my TBR. Then the fact that Ramsay is a stubborn Scot. Totally swoon worthy. The bit of mystery adds much to the story and really puts into play that initial conflict between the two. Plus, Byrne’s writing is just so good. It’s almost like every word is chosen so carefully and they are the exact right ones. I could not put this book down. It’s truly fantastic and one that has put Byrne on my must-read authors list in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s for an ARC of this book. The opinions here are my own.
Perfectly charming and heartwarming characters. Witty and romantic! Interesting plot that kept me thoroughly engaged throughout. Enjoyed every minute of it!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
I got an ARC on Netgalley, thank you Ms Byrne and St. Martin’s Paperbacks
I loved this book and it’s so hard to review books that I loved, but I will give it a try! This is the 2nd in the Devil you know series and it takes place a few months after book 1.
The hero and the heroine met before and they kind of like/dislike each other from afar. They are kind of pushed together when Cecelia inherits her aunt’s business. She and Ramsey are on different parts of the law… It was fun to see them but heads, but also heart breaking…
This is one of Ms Byrne’s lightest books, but don’t think it’s light. We have murders, tragic pasts, and lots of emotional characters and moments. I can’t wait to read the last friend’s book, Francesca, and read about her past.
Fun, steamy, full of danger and intrigue, the female main character hiding her identity, and the male main character trying to figure things out…and has a smexy Scottish brogue… Wowzers! This book has it all and more. I truly enjoyed it and highly recommend.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor.
This one is a read-all-night-and-fall-asleep-at-work story — just wonderful. I could not put it down, and am waiting anxiously for the third installment of this series, the tale of three young ladies who met at school and became bound ever after by friendship but also secrets. This isn’t just a romance — although that is sizzling — it’s also a mystery and adventure, and Kerrigan Byrne manages to do justice to all the many parts of the tale. This chapter of the story has some amazing twists and turns (along with explosions), and despite having an idea of where she was going, the twist at the ending was superb. This book is well-plotted AND has amazing characters.
The tale is basic — Lord Chief Justice of the High Court Cassius Gerard Ramsay is determined to stamp out crime and vice. Orphan Cecelia Teague is dealing with an unexpected inheritance, a gaming house that is not quite the thing for a proper lady, and one that puts her in direct conflict with Cassius. The conflict is delicious, as is the mystery of Cecelia’s origins and the deeper mystery that binds the Red Rogues — the name the girls gave themselves at school. It all gets wound up in Francesca’s story. I can’t wait. (NetGalley provided an ARC; opinions mine.)
All Scot and Bothered
The Devil You Know #2

The cover is eye-catching at least, in fact, it almost hurts the eyes with that color combination of bright blue and orange-red. The couple looks as if they might go up in flames at any minute. Which I’m sure is the intention. Oh well, they get their point across blatantly if not tastefully.
The story is all about passion, good and bad. There are hate groups in it, well, one group. They are willing to kill without provocation to get their way or to clear their way to get what they want, to sacrifice children or adults to have what they want, what they feel they are entitled to. They feel they must answer to no one.
On the other side of things is the Lord Chief Justice of the High Court, Cassius Gerard Ramsey. He’s a Scotsman by birth and looked down on by many for that reason alone. He’s also almost larger than life being very tall, muscular and having a very stern visage with cold blue eyes. He’s passionately determined to stop the disappearance of children in London and he’s convinced that it’s the Scarlet Lady who’s responsible for it.
Into the center of all of this comes the highly educated but innocent Cecelia Teague, secret benefactor of her aunt’s fortune and properties, which include a school for women and the gaming hell to support the school. Cecelia has never met her aunt, nor has she ever heard of the Scarlet Lady, but she and her aunt shared letters once a year and they both have a passion for codes and puzzles. The first thing she is given is a diary full of codes and has to discover what the secrets are of all of London. And both sides want it!
Cecelia has never been so wanted in her entire life. Not by anyone but her two best friends from school, Frank and Alex AKA Francesca Cavendish Countess of Mont Claire and Lady Alexandra Duchess of Redmayne. Never before by a man. Cecelia is tall and plump with lots of curves, copper ringlets, and big blue eyes. As a child, she was considered fat, and growing up young men were probably intimidated by her. She didn’t fit the stylish form. But the Lord Chief Justice is a very large man and is not taken by the stylish form. He is totally tempted by Cecelia’s form, though. In fact, he can’t stop getting an erection in her presence! And it’s making him angry!
Through drawing rooms and back alleys, Ramsey and Cecelia battle it out to arrive at their HEA after both have had their horrible backgrounds revealed and their hearts laid bare. Recommended.
What a wonderful story! What a wonderful series! I’ve been eagerly awaiting the second book in the Devil You Know series by author Kerrigan Byrne, and my reward for waiting was another exciting, romantic, sexy tale about the Red Rogues – Alexandra, Cecelia, and Francesca or Alex, Cecil and Frank as they like to be called. In book #1, Alex captured the heart, soul – and body – of her dangerous duke Piers. Now we turn to Cecil and the fierce lord.
We first meet Cecelia Teague as a child: chubby, embarrassingly brilliant at maths, achingly lonely, harassed, humiliated, harangued – and locked in a cellar by her father, a bitter, fanatically pious vicar who punishes her for merely being female, as if that is justification for making her feel unwanted, unloved, and unable to ever succeed. And this time it seems he is just going to let her starve to death and die down there.
Fast forward 15 years to the late 1800s and meet a hard, harsh, bitter, unhappy, achingly lonely lord, Cassius Gerard Ramsay, Lord Chief Justice of the High Court. And, oh yes, huge and handsome. We don’t learn so much about his background, but we learn enough to know he doesn’t remember it fondly. He’s unyielding, unwavering in his desire to see justice done, unloving and unlovable. He’s not called the Vicar of Vice for nothing. If he can be close to anyone, it’s his half-brother Piers. And Piers is married to Alexandra, best friend to Cecelia and one of the Red Rogues. There’s your connection!
Cecelia and Ramsay have met before, of course. But their encounter at the start of All Scot and Bothered sets things off and heats things up. If this were a cartoon, when Ramsay looks up and sees Cecelia he would be smacked in the side of the head with something, the word, “Wham!!!” would appear and hearts and birds would revolve around him. He is so instantly attracted to Cecelia that it’s as if he’s on a string being pulled toward her. And as for Cecelia, that string is firmly attached to her, too.
This is a delightful, rollicking, steamy, suspenseful adventure with characters that you love the moment you meet them, and continue to love through their bad behaviour, sullen moods and subterfuge. You know where the story is going, or at least you fervently hope so, but you want to read each and every word to extract the most enjoyment possible out of it, and read the sexy bits very slowly and possibly twice.
Cecelia is not a bluestocking so is on the fringe of society but that suits her just fine. She was rescued from that cellar by an unknown benefactor. She’s independent and that’s just how she likes it. She doesn’t expect to attract a man and doesn’t need to (well, we know better, don’t we?). Ramsay is devoted to his work, to cleaning things up, doesn’t trust, need or want women. His is a lonely life but it’s deliberate. Don’t expose yourself, don’t get hurt. But what is that attraction to Cecelia going to mean?
The writing in All Scot and Bothered is masterful. The glimpses into both Ramsay’s and Cecelia‘s thoughts as one talks and the other imagines something entirely different were so much fun to read, the smile on my face just wouldn’t go away. The story is more than just double meanings and hints at romance, however. When Cecelia learns who her benefactor is she is thrust into immediate and serious danger, and unwittingly forced to assume the persona of The Scarlet Lady and deceive Lord Ramsay. Who by the way is rather attracted to this Scarlet Lady, against his will and better judgment. Hmm. More smiles and romantic undertones, but also some serious topics highlight the danger of just being a girl or woman in this place and time. Young girls are being kidnapped and sold, people have been blackmailed, betrayed and murdered. Just how high this goes up into society and politics is frightening. What is The Crimson Council and who is on it? The attraction between Cecelia and Ramsay is obvious, and is so is the intrigue and secrecy. Can it be resolved or will these two achingly lonely people remain that way?
I could go on and on. When you see Cecelia through Ramsay’s (unwitting, unwilling?) eyes and hear her talk and just be herself, you forget she is usually been considered too fat, too smart, too boring. In Ramsay’s eyes she is immediately beautiful and desirable and stays that way. She brings out a tender side in him, and is rewarded with some rare smiles and some downright poetic declarations. But enough – just read this book. It’s a perfect standalone but treat yourself and read the series. It’s well-written, superbly plotted, keeps you on the edge with suspense and worry or fanning yourself from the passion, and leaves you more than satisfied with the conclusion while wanting more time with these characters.
Thanks to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for providing an advance copy in exchange for my honest review. I loved it, highly recommend it, and can’t wait for this entertaining story to continue.
I loved How to Love a Duke in Ten Days and this second book didn’t disappoint!
I loved the balance between Ramsey and Cecelia’s characters, both in their childhood and adulthood.
All this attraction, the plots behind the main love story…
Seeing all the Rogues, Jean-Yves, getting some hints of what’s next with Francesca and… (you’ll have to read this book to find out!!!)
The best part was how Cecelia kept her kind heart through all those years of loneliness and hurt, and how “Cassius” finds out life is also healing and trusting again.
A beautiful love story, I can’t wait for Frank’s book!!!

This is a story of Cecilia and Ramsey who have been cruelly raised and must learn to trust again. I liked that a crime brings them together. I received an ARC from NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for my honest review.
Wonderful! Characters had a genuineness that made the story so relatable. Both the hero and the heroine had felt rejection in their lives, and this made them appreciate each other even more. I loved that the misconceptions and misrepresentations were quickly resolved and didn’t bog down the story. Great writing. I experienced heart pangs and tears.
ARC provided through Netgalley.
This book was absolutely amazing. Kerrigan Byrne creates magic with every story, and this one is absolutely no exception.
I absolutely love Cecelia. She is everything: a genius, a kind and lovely woman, a stalwart companion, and a champion of the downtrodden. She is a complex and deeply interesting character. If you are already a devotee of Kerrigan Byrne, this will come as no surprise. Ramsay is also a complex character full of paradoxical stoicism. I did not love him half so much as I loved Cecelia. It KILLS me to say that because I am usually so much in favor of his sort of hero. He was arrogant and judgy until Cecelia (sweetly) kicks his a$$. This is a Sunshine heroine and storm cloud hero. The best combination.
This story is flawless. The shocking plot twist is at least a bit shocking. I saw it coming, but it will absolutely steal your breath! The plot was darling. The world is amazing. Vivid and alive. When KB creates a world, you LIVE in that world. Total immersion. The characters are complicated. Even the side characters. That’s another thing I adore about Kerrigan Byrne books, even the side characters have these fascinating back stories and personalities. There are no flat people. Not even children. Many times authors use children as props. Kerrigan’s children are children. There is no other way to say it.
Wholeheartedly recommend this book.
All Scot and Bothered (Devil You Know Book 2 by Kerrigan Byrne is a stand alone Historical Romance and an awe-inspiring tale.
This is Cecelia and Ramsay’s story. Well written and beautifully written. The storyline has everything a reader could possibly wish for in a great story. The characters are flawed, brave, brawn and lovable. With mystery, intrigue, tears, laughs, mayhem and steamy lovemaking, which was very well written. I enjoyed
Cecelia and Ramsay’s story, it was a bit like watching a movie unfold, you holding your breathe to see what was coming next. Exciting, awe-inspiring, breathtaking and beautifully written. A must read!! You will not be disappointed in this awesome read.

All Scot and Bothered is the second book in the Devil You Know Series and it follows the story of Cecilia and Ramsay. Ramsay is known for his ruthless cunning. He can turn on the charm at a moment’s notice and likes to be number one in all things. As the Chief Justice of the High Court, he never expected that his next mission would turn his world upside down….Cecilia’s life has been anything but easy. Her future looked dire until a secret benefactor came into the picture. Suddenly Cecilia finds herself in a life she never expected. She’s is forced to live two lives: one as a proper, respectable lady, and the other as the owner of a gaming establishment. She’s intrigued by Lord Ramsay but doesn’t know how long she keeps up with her two lives. Only time will tell what will happen when truths and secrets are revealed…
Overall, I thought this was an enjoyable read. I will be the first to admit that it did take me some time to get into the plot, but once I did, I was hooked. The plot of this story is complex and has a lot of moving pieces. I really enjoyed Cecilia and Ramsay together. They were total opposites and rocked the perfect enemies to lovers’ vibe. They kept me intrigued and coming back for more. I wasn’t sure if I was going to love Ramsay, but what can I say, I have a thing for the “anti” hero of the story.
All Scot and Bothered thrilled me and intrigued me. This story was everything I was looking for and had just the right amount of danger and romance with some delicious angst and twists that I didn’t see coming. The only complaint I have about this story is that I found the ending somewhat lacking. It felt a bit abrupt and wishing that we were given just a little more.
When it’s all said and done, All Scot and Bothered was a terrific read to spend my evening getting swept up in. I easily finished this book in a single sitting and I look forward to seeing what adventure lies ahead for us readers in the next book!
