“There were four of us altogether: The indefatigable and brave Raccoon and his shadow Hoppy attended to the legwork of the practice. The Management—a strict but unfair ruler—counted the money and always found it lacking. My job, as the only one with the law license, was to attend to the nebulous demands of the Law. I was pretty sure that the other three on my crew thought they could do better … without me, if only the capricious state laws of South Duck stopped making practicing law without a license illegal, an actual crime.” Alienation of Affections
Slighted by the infidelity of Mr Grimm, Mrs. Grimm wants to have her day in court.
But she does not want to sue her husband. Or to involve the lawyers and judges in airing her family’s laundry. Impossible, you say? Maybe not for Portia Porter and her faithful legal team. The Raccoon explains high fashion.

Mr. and Mrs. Grimm were a power couple that is until Mr. Grimm has an affair. Mrs. Grimm shows up at the law office of Portia Porter and wants the situation solved but she also wants no court case, no divorce, her husband back and the floozy sent off. This leaves the law off in a quandary until they come up with suing the girlfriend under alienation of affection.
This is a witty, funny and delightful court case that is full of exceptionally defined characters with quirky personalities. The narrative is wonderful giving in sight into otherwise small or insignificant things and shines the light on them. The appeal of this story comes from the interplay between the characters and numerous way things are presented. I enjoyed the comedy surrounding the court case and how the pieces of the puzzle had to fall into place in order for the outcome to be achieved. I tell you, I will never look at a price of clothing quite the same way. Great read.

Mrs. Martha Grimm, the wealthy client, had an unusual request for her attorney. Everything she asked for seemed unusual but possible to carry out — “No court. No hearings. No dividing property up.” — until she got to the part where there were to be “no lawyers”! Mrs. Grimm said she wanted her day in court to tell her story to her cheating husband so that he can see what he had done. But her “no court” rule made it difficult to consider how she would have a day in court and still stay within the bounds she herself enumerated. The Raccoon assistant taking explicit notes had to stop a few times in the hope that the obscure would become clear enough to capture in words. The final request was that she wanted her husband back, having put far too much time in him to let him go. With her life comfortable, pleasant and safe, why should Martha have to give it up because of an opportunistic tart?
Office protocol dictated that clients could only be accepted by vote of the entire firm, which consisted of four members. As they gathered to review the case, The Management was able to sum it up for everyone quite well. “The lady wants to have her day in court, but she does not want to sue her husband? Does a lady [allow herself to] sue the floozy who stole her husband? What does it say in the notes about that?” Ahhh, an alienation of affections suit! There was the answer they needed!
Funny, or at least tongue-in-cheek, the author allows us to share in the goings on of a law office trying to meet a client’s sometimes impossible expectations. But there are ways. Break it down step by step, and then find a way to meet each requirement. The reader can begin to see why the lawyers are “paid the big bucks”. Nothing is straightforward and it takes flexibility and a strong basis in the law to be brilliant. I found it difficult at times to spot the “fiction” in the story line since I kept nodding in the affirmative that it was all so true. Very clever and a fun read!
A probably closer to real life than we would like to think parody of marital dispute courtroom drama.
Alienation of affections as a plea was an interesting approach.
Humorous but likely accurate descriptions of desires and expectations of clients versus realities.
Expectation – that client can finally tell the world their story. What happens? Opposition tells their story as well, and we already know he is a convincing charmer.
In this case, the wife did not want to win the case per se, she just wants to maintain status quo.
A great and insightful humorous treatment.
