Palmer, on the other hand, would like nothing better than to make Josie his wife and to keep her in Ponder. But Josie can’t imagine abandoning her mother back in the Emerald City and sacrificing her career to stay in this isolated town—not even for a man she’s quickly coming to love.
Fate has other plans. Josie misses the last boat out of town before winter sets in, stranding her in Ponder and putting her dream job at risk. Alaskan Holiday is the latest holiday offering by prolific author Debbie Macomber. Newly trained chef Josie Avery has taken a job for the summer season at the Brewster’s lodge in the village of Ponder, Alaska. While she falls in love with the area, the back woods characters, the peace and quiet, and, especially, local master sword smith Palmer Saxon, she knows she will only be in Ponder for the summer. Come the end of the season Josie will be heading back to her home in Seattle to begin her dream job as sous chef at the new Chez Anton restaurant.
Due to many things, Josie misses the last ferry out after declining Palmer’s proposal. But Palmer puts his efforts into helping Josie realize her goals without regard to his own heartache. Palmer arranges for a bush pilot friend to collect Josie the next time he is in the area, getting her back to Seattle to take her new job.
While they had promised to call and text every day, as time went by the calls and texts became less. Josie is working 16 hour days. Palmer is diligently completing a commissioned civil war sword, and time becomes a divisive force.
But when Palmer and hunting guide Jack surprise Josie at the restaurant, the story takes a big turn. What happens next makes the story a holiday delight.
Debbie Macomber has once again spun a lovely and heartwarming story with endearing characters and delightful conclusions. I did enjoy this book and do recommend it!
Did you know that Debbie Macomber decorates more than 20 Christmas trees for her home every year? In life and on the page, Debbie is definitely the Queen of Christmas. This book, set in a secluded Alaskan village called Ponder, is a picture perfect holiday romance, just the thing to get you in the spirit of the season, with believable characters and a happy, hopeful, and very satisfying ending.
As always, Debbie Macomber brings her readers a romance with a happily ever after ending. It’s always refreshing to pick up one of her romance novels – they are quick reads with people who solve all of their problems and end up happy. What can be wrong with that?
Josie is a chef who takes a summer job working at a resort off the beaten path in Alaska. She has a job waiting for her in Seattle and despite her initial misgivings, she learns to love Alaska and the people that she comes into contact with during the summer – especially Palmer, a local craftsman. When it’s time for her to return home to Seattle, she misses the last boat out of the area for the winter which puts her dream job at risk but also keeps her close to Palmer. How this problem is solved makes for an interesting Christmas romance.
This was enjoyable read that will keep you in the Christmas spirit when life gets hectic around the holidays.

Alaskan Holiday by Debbie Macomber takes readers to Ponder, Alaska. Josie Avery has spent the last six months working as the chef at Caribou Lake Lodge. The season is over, and Josie is heading back to Seattle to start her new position as sous chef at Chef Douglas Anton’s new restaurant. Josie will miss Alaska, the freedom to create unique dishes with local game, Jack Corcoran who supplies game to the lodge and loves to eat, and will especially miss swordsmith, Palmer Saxon. Josie and Palmer spent many hours together during the season. But her mother is her only family and she lives in Seattle. Plus, working for Chef Anton is a wonderful opportunity and she has worked hard to obtain her culinary training. Palmer proposes the night before Josie departs, but she feels she cannot stay (though she is very tempted). The next morning, Josie awakens late and learns she missed the last ferry out of Ponder. Jack insists that this is Palmer’s chance to convince Josie to stay in their rustic town (and keep cooking her delicious food). When Josie finally departs for Seattle, the pair want to make their long distance relationship work. Palmer is willing to give Josie the time and space she needs. Reality gets in the way of their plans and a picture of Josie with the handsome chef awakens the green eyed monster in Palmer. Can the magic of Christmas find a way to bring these two star-crossed lovers together?
Alaskan Holiday is a charming story. I loved Debbie Macomber’s descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness and the people who live in Ponder. Jack Corcoran’s is a delightful character. He is rough around the edges, but a softy inside. He loves to eat and wants to keep his favorite chef in Alaska. Jack provides plenty of humor in Alaskan Holiday. Josie has fallen for the quiet, rugged Palmer Saxon who is a master swordsmith. But she does not want to leave her mother alone in Seattle plus she has gotten her dream job of working for a big name chef. But if two people love each other, life has a way of working things out. Compromise is the key to any relationship. I thought Alaskan Holiday was well-written, with engaging characters and a good flow. While the story does have an expected outcome, it did not hinder my reading pleasure. Debbie Macomber has a way of drawing readers into her books and keeping them entertained. I am giving Alaskan Holiday 4 out of 5 stars. Alaskan Holiday is a light, feel good story which is just what we need during the holiday season.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT
Carrie Slayton, a big-city society-page columnist, longs to write more serious news stories. So her editor hands her a challenge: She can cover any topic she wants, but only if she first scores the paper an interview with Finn Dalton, the notoriously reclusive author.
Living in the remote Alaskan wilderness, Finn has written a megabestselling memoir about surviving in the wild. But he stubbornly declines to speak to anyone in the press, and no one even knows exactly where he lives.
Digging deep into Finn’s past, Carrie develops a theory on his whereabouts. It is the holidays, but her career is at stake, so she forsakes her family celebrations and flies out to snowy Alaska. When she finally finds Finn, she discovers a man both more charismatic and more stubborn than she even expected. And soon she is torn between pursuing the story of a lifetime and following her heart.
MY TAKE
The love between Finn and Carrie is pretty intense. In spite of the initial friction, the attraction between the two is pretty fast. What keeps it from being insta-love is the long-distance relationship that follows. There are hurts to overcome and arrogance that one way is the only way to challenge. The resolution is so satisfying.
One thing I didn’t understand was why Carrie put up with her “friend” Sophie. Seriously!
I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a good job.
I love this book it’s really good
Jack is so funny and I loved Palmer’s proposal. When Josie showed up to work for six months as a chef in a remote town in Alaska, Palmer falls in love at first sight. Now her time is up, she is getting ready to get on the last ferry out of town and he hasn’t even told her how he feels. Palmer knows he is not smooth and isn’t sure how to propose. Jack is trying to give him pointers, but his advice would likely make her run the other way. After Josie misses the ferry, Palmer is sure that she wants to stay, but she just overslept. So, because Palmer wants her to be happy, he helps her find a way to get back to Seattle to take a job with a famous chef.
After Josie is in her dream job, she figures out it isn’t much of a dream and she really misses Palmer, Jack and Alaska. One night Palmer and Jack show up at her work and she realizes just how much she has missed them and Alaska. Will she go back with Palmer? What will she do in Alaska, her life is in Seattle, isn’t it?
Alaskan Holiday by Debbie Macomber
Alternating chapters of each of the main characters, book is located at Ponder, Alaska.
Josie had been hired at the lodge and her time was up-the lodge was shutting down and she was heading back to Seattle.
Love the events for no special reason why the community gets together.
Story also follows Palmer who is a worker and the lodge and he favors Josie and wants her to stay but he can’t express himself in words. He knows her suitcases are packed.
His sister Alicia and she’s asking if he’s going to propose to Josie. Love hearing how they were raised near the Arctic Circle.
Like all the food combinations and Palmer’s career, priceless being able to use her hands to make a living. Like hearing about his work.
Love hearing of the salmon ping pong game LOL lots of fun travel described. He finishes his project and wants to deliver it before Christmas. He and Jack make plans and things don’t go according to plan.
She is so innovative and creative. Great holiday read when things are so unpredictable.
Inclues an excerpt from another book by the author. About the author is listed at the end.
Received this review copy from andom House Publishing Group – Ballantine via Netgalley and this is my honest opinion.

When you love someone, you let them go. That is what Palmer did. From the moment Palmer set eyes on Josie, he fell in love. He spent the next 6 months showing her how beautiful Ponder, Alaska is. On the last day he asks Josie to marry him. She turned him down. Josie has her dream job waiting for her in Seattle along with her Mom and friends. She can’t stay even if she has fallen in love too. Being free to choose your destiny may not turn out how you plan.
I always look forward to Ms. Macomber’s Christmas books each year. They always put me in the Christmas spirit. Alaskan Holiday did not disappoint. This book was a little different than Ms. Macomber’s previous books, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Josie is a chef working at a lodge in Ponder, Alaska for six months before starting her job at an upscale restaurant in Seattle. Palmer is a craftsman who has lived in Ponder his whole life. Josie comes to love Ponder and Palmer, but she is a city girl and she has her dream job waiting in Seattle. So at the end of her six months in Alaska, she plans to leave and go back home, but she misses the last boat of the season out of the Alaskan wilderness and finds herself stranded in Ponder.
Alaskan Holiday is a light holiday romance. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary romance.
I received an ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Josie Avery decides to take a summer job in Alaska while she waits for the start of her dream job as sous chef in one of Seattle’s hottest new restaurants. While in Alaska, Josie enjoys the slowed down way of life there, but she especially loves enjoying spending time with Palmer Saxon, and his crotchety friend Jack Corcoran. Josie could really see herself married to someone like Palmer but after how hard she has worked to become a chef, she can’t just give up that dream to stay in Alaska forever since there is no way Palmer would ever leave. Plus Josie can’t leave her mom who is back in Seattle, since it has been only the two of them for a long time. When the fall season finally arrives, Josie is heartbroken to leave, but she knows that she has to. Palmer is just as heartbroken. He wants her to stay but realizes that he must let her go. Josie was planning on catching the very last ferry of the season out of Ponder, Alaska but ends up missing it. Palmer does what any guy in love would do….he helps her find a way out of Ponder, even though it breaks his heart.
When Josie gets back to Seattle, she realizes that her dream may not be what she really wants. She also starts to realize a few things about her mom, her job and mostly Palmer. When Christmas time makes a little holiday magic, Josie must take a huge leap of faith to find her happy ending.
I loved this story! These characters were so fun. Josie was determined to achieve her dreams, she just didn’t realize what those dreams really were. Palmer was such a sweet and caring man and he certainly deserved to have someone wonderful love him. Now onto Jack….he was so funny! I’d laugh out loud every time he was in the story! I was so glad he even got his happy ending too!
This was a sweet contemporary romance that took place in a small, isolated village in Alaska. I loved the descriptions of the scenery, especially the romantic atmosphere created by the Northern Lights. Josie has a plan for her life, to cook with the famous Chef Anton in Seattle. Although Palmer falls in love with her during her summer cooking adventure in Alaska, he also has a plan for his life; he wants to continue to pursue his career as a master sword smith in Ponder. Dreams clash with reality in this quick, easy read. My favorite character by far was Jack, the comic relief to all the drama. Jack is always hungry and is determined to do all he can to get Josie to marry Palmer, just so she can be in Ponder to cook for him. I also liked Palmer’s dog Hobo who seemed to understand humans a lot better than we understand ourselves sometimes. This book was entertaining and humorous at time, set at that magical time between Thanksgiving and Christmas and proving that sometimes wishes do come true.

Another well written perfectly paced story pulling you in from the start. This one is about Josie and her Alaska trip where she falls for the small town of Ponder and the residents. Palmer falls for Josie but he understands how hard it is to live in Alaska during the winter months. You cannot go wrong with this story.
I’m in love with Debbie Macomber’s novels and Christmas’s always touched my heart and I dream about the day of seeing some of them turning into a movie. With Alaskan Holiday it was just like that, a different love story since it already starts with a propose and ends with a more than perfect ending.
The trio Palmer, Jack and Josie stole my heart. With a light and funny plot, Debbie shows how true love is patient, simple and wants the best for the other person.
Great story for a very special Christmas.
This story was about reaching for your dreams & working to achieve them. Josie & her mother have worked hard to insure she received her culinary education & degree. Now, she’s graduated & received an offer to work under one of the premier chefs in his new restaurant. It’s what she’s wanted all her life. Just one catch! The job doesn’t start for 6 months until the restaurant is finished. To earn money in the meantime, Josie takes on a job cooking for a lodge in Alaska. Not only does she love the country, she finds the love of her life, Palmer. How can she leave him now that the summer is over? On the other hand, how can she give up her dream & disappoint her mother?
Palmer can’t believe it. He loves his life in Alaska & the open beauty of the country. His job enables him to live anywhere but he can’t stand crowds. He’s been waiting forever for her to walk into his life. How can he let her go? But, how can he ask her to give up her dreams? He proposes a long distance relationship but as her calls dwindle down, his jealousy grows. Is she really that busy at work or did she find someone new?
Debbie Macomber has written another excellent, moving story. Her characters are well rounded & realistic. The interactions between Palmer & Josie paint the perfect picture of their love, the turmoil of the decision & the toll that decision takes on each of them. Ms. Macomber shows that we all continually grow & our dreams change as we grow. They evolve. I loved that this story made me think about how my dreams have changed & the effect circumstances had on that change. Ms. Macomber has a talent for taking what lives in our hearts & minds & putting it into words!
Decided to check this one out because I find fiction that’s set in Alaska to be really fun.
Started out a bit dull and lacking that Alaskan feel I tend to get reading other books set here.
As the book went on, I was continually surprised by the poor writing, since Macomber is a successful author. This was also a highly predictable cookie cutter romance—one of those where you can tell exactly how everything will go before the first chapter is completed.
An extremely dull, unoriginal read.
2 stars.
Note:
LISTENERS BEWARE!!!!
I listened to the audiobook; the introduction was painful. It seemed to be Macomber herself and she does NOT have a voice that’s easy to listen to.
However, once chapter 1 started up, it didn’t improve much. The voices are pretty hard to take and there are weird, misplaced accents at times. Recommend getting this in print or digital to spare yourself. Really: SAVE YOURSELF. A 2-star performance.
My Review of Alaskan Holiday by Debbie Macomber; audio by Random House Audio
What a hoot! Debbie Macombers’ Alaskan Holiday is a fun, light-hearted read, perfect for this time of year. While listening to this story, I kept thinking of a local elderly man, who is the epitome of Jack. Picture a codger type man that you can’t help but to love. That’s Jack! He’ll make you laugh and he’ll make you shake your head. Jack is pure goodness you’ll just want to hug, figuratively that is! Debbie creates a beautiful love story about Josie, a young culinary artist finding her way in the ever demanding restaurant world and Palmer, a handsome Alaskan man with a heart of gold. (Palmer reminded me of a magazine I enjoyed perusing many moons ago called Alaska Men Magazine. Side note: the magazine still exists today!) Love abounds in this story, making for an enjoyable light romance for all to enjoy. I’ve never read a Debbie Macomber book I didn’t like! Hot chocolate, a warm fire, and this story await. Enjoy!
More of a 3.5
When I saw Alaskan Holiday I was all for this book and while I mostly enjoyed it I had a hard time getting into it in the beginning. When this one starts your dropped into the middle of Josie and Palmer’s parting which I felt was an odd place to start.
I’m still new to her books and aside from that little hiccup for me this was a cute read.
I loved this book. The Alaskan setting was perfect. Josie and Palmer were such a sweet couple. This book reminded me of those cozy Christmas movies I look forward to each year.
