Exciting action thriller. Great characters. Excellent aviation novel.
Action packed. Well written. Read it in one sit sitting.
This was an exciting read and kept me turning pages every chance I got! Some main characters were so special that I worried they might die. The plane ride was bumpy for the passengers and I felt like I was right there with them. The most scary part was realizing that this could happen in real life any day!
There’s something especially captivating about the damaged jet—filled with passengers—trying to make it safely to land again. It’s been the subject of several movies and of a number of excellent books and John Etzel has added a worthy story to that proud company. To make his novel even more exciting, roughly the first half of the book is told in a “countdown” mode working its way up to the “event” with the tension building all the way. In those pages, we meet the main characters, jump into Afghanistan where we learn that the entire motivation for the bombing (the murder of a village supposedly by Americans) is based on a lie, and watch events lead right up to the explosion of the bomb on the plane. Then we spend the rest of the novel watching the surviving passengers try and figure out how to land the aircraft.
This novel is brimming with tension helped along by two of the stupidest air marshals to ever be given a badge, a really crafty bomber, and a number of personal problems which greatly complicate the rescue of the airplane. We also get to see the people on the ground come to the realization that the bomb is on the plane and being unable to do anything because the jet is far out over the Pacific on its way to Hawaii. The technical aspects of the novel were also very credible (at least to a non-expert like myself) and helped build the excitement.
In the first few pages, however, I almost gave up on the book. The introduction of the hero as a guy having an affair with a married woman made me instantly dislike him, but Etzel coaxed me back onto the hero’s side and had me cheering for him through a flashback that greatly clarified what kind of man he was.
The ultimate solution to the crippled aircraft and its fuel problem also surprised and delighted me. It felt incredibly creative and also totally believable. There were also a number of touching scenes that just pushed this novel over the top for me.
If you enjoy cultivating your fear of flying, give Airliner Down a try.
Not what you expected. Entertaining and on the edge of your seat. I enjoyed the book .
Great story. Interesting how people reacted and dealt with the situation. I might not ever fly again.
A very exciting thriller that keeps the reader on the edge of his seat. It seems like an impossible situation with a suicide bomber on board, and several airline personnel going to Honolulu for holidays.
This book was read by a retired airline captain. With a few exceptions, most details were accurately described. I believe a non-airline pilot would enjoy it more but, it wasn’t a bad story line.
Should be a movie soon
One of the best books I have read in a long time. Well worth the read. Kept me on the edge of my seat
Great prequel for all of John Etzil Justice Series. His writing was confusing at times as he jumped back and forth from past to present in Airliner Down. Once I got into the story I finally got the hang of it (past vs present and large cast of characters) and then realized it did not hurt the books story line. Would highly recommend. Have most of the Justice Series by John Etzil and that’s going to be my next read.
This book was hard to put down. It was filled with twists and turns that kept you guessing!
Fast moving, well rounded characters & realistic
An excellent book that kept me reading. A novel and subtle approach to the vulnerabilities of airline travel. Well developed plot. I will read more of his writings!
Exciting, couldn’t put it down.
This book ticked a lot of boxes as an extremely suspenseful page turner. Kept me holding my breath wondering how the main character, Kevin, a passenger and also a pilot would be able to obtain control of the doomed airplane in flight. Fighting the time line to avoid crashing while attempting to enter the locked cockpit door and all the obstacles in play made this a story full of tragic events taking place while in flight. While some of the supporting characters involved were rushing to his aid others proved to be detrimental to the cause. Felt as though one could visualize being a passenger on the flight and hoping there would be a possibility of a safe landing rather than facing one’s death. A well written scary action packed storyline by John Etzill that kept my attention to the very last page even with those unexpected gruesome details surrounding various people on the flight!!!
Great book
I could not put it down.
I started reading it cause I couldn’t sleep one night. It was so riveting I couldn’t go back to sleep even if I had tried. Very suspenseful. Also gave a lot of information about planes. Very believable story.
This book was an enjoyable read. Lots of action with twists and turns…and mostly believable. The plot kept building and as I approached the ending, I couldn’t put it down. The reader does need to accept that certain events COULD happen when they probably could not…but that does not take away from the story line.
