A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond…
The Solaris Empire is one conquest away from uniting the continent, and the rare elemental magic sleeping in seventeen-year-old library apprentice Vhalla Yarl could shift the tides of war.
Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books. … world of books. But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all—the Crown Prince Aldrik—she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.

I loved the magic system in this book, along with the world building. It was fast-paced and exciting too. Easy to turn those pages! Caveats: I didn’t love the main character (although she grew on me by the end of the book), and the love interest being a jerk with a heart of gold is pretty much the opposite of what I like in my book boyfriends. That said, I enjoyed this book in spite of those caveats.
I’ve never read a series this fast before! I’m currently on book 4 and this series is just… everything!
This was a “stay up late” book. I DON’T NEED SLEEP, I NEED ANSWERS! I was obsessed and read the whole series in a matter of days. I have a new favorite author!
I truly loved every second of this!!! What a unique and heart tugging book!! So much was happening throughout that my whole attention was concentrated upon every detailed and every character. Vhalla is one character that you won’t soon be forgetting!! I wanted to wrap her up and keep her safe. The Crown Prince Aldrik was very intriguing!! I so wanted to see how the relationship between the two could possibly play out. Vhalla is just a commoner and the prince is one high and mighty dude. But he has had to be ruthless and he is absolutely so when he first meets Vhalla. I loved seeing glimpses of who he could be when he spent time with her. I cannot wait to begin the second book I have fallen so hard for these two. Ms. Kova is brilliant!! I love how she flows the dialogue along and draws out these characters who are just content to remain in the shadows. I am so excited to see where these next books take them and just what Vhalla’s powers can do. I hope the prince can keep her safe but only time will tell
***REREAD REVIEW 01/19/2019***
There are hardly words for the amount of joy that this book and this series has brought me. Rereading this book for a second time was glorious. While I certainly never forgot this world for a moment, my reread has only solidified my outright love for this series.
There are so many things to love about this series, but my favorite was always the romance. This is one of the absolute best slow-burn romances (with a mild bit of enemies to lovers trope in the beginning) that I have ever read. Elise Kova has this down to an art. Truly. The chemistry between the two main characters in this series will blow you away. The dialogues that these two characters have is perfect in every way and will keep you reading page after page for more of their banter. The way that the two main characters come together is both beautiful and stimulating. I could ship Vhalla and Aldrik until the end of time. I will be going down with this ship.
The characters in this series are ones that will stay with you indefinitely. I have never forgotten this cast of characters. They have been dear to my heart since I first read this series. It is books like this one that make a person truly realize what good writing is. Kova makes each character interesting and purposeful. The relationships that are formed and the natural chemistry between characters is so impressive in this series. It definitely makes is hard to put these books down. The reader feels a part of the story and doesn’t want to leave these characters behind.
The plot of this series is really composed beautifully. The foreshadowing is excellent. During my reread I was able to spot so many things that will be important in later books of the series. I love how seamless the plot is. Everything flows wonderfully and you can truly tell how cleverly crafted the story is.
The world within these pages is easy to latch onto because Kova’s descriptions are evocative and powerful. The reader truly feels immersed in this world from the start of the story. It is easy to fall into this world because of the careful construction of the magic system, the government, and the religious beliefs of this world.
If you love young adult fantasy then I can’t recommend this series enough! It will thoroughly capture your heart with its creative world, enthralling plot, and unforgettable characters. Do yourself a favor and pick up this book! After rereading this book, I can hardly contain my excitement for Kova’s newest series set in this world, Air Awakens: Vortex Chronicles. Vortex Visions is the first book in this new series and it will be released February 4, 2019. Be still my beating heart.
**ORIGINAL Review**
I have been hearing so many great things about this series. I have been wanting to read it since last fall, and I finally got my chance! I am just kicking myself for not reading it sooner. I was entranced by this book from the very first page. There is so much to love about this book. And look at the cover? Does it not give you goosebumps?
The characters were my favorite thing about this book. Vhalla is such a great character. She seems so vulnerable at first, just coming into her own. It is a great journey watching her figure things out. I like how she seems so ordinary at the beginning of the book. Not ugly by any means, but also not drop dead gorgeous. At least, not in a supermodel kind of way. I adored Aldrick! He was so frustrating at times, but I couldn’t get enough of him. You can tell that he has some hidden torment that he is dealing with. He is strong and very sure of himself. Most of all I loved the way that Vhalla and Aldrick come together in the book. I liked that the romance was slow and steady, and not hot and heavy. The timing was just right.
I really loved the plot. There are so many great fantasy themes in this- magic, princes, politics, a kingdom at war…it’s such a fascinating world. I enjoyed the world building. This world has so many elements to it. It was easy to picture the kingdom and the way of life. The flow of the story was perfect. The world was introduced to the reader without dragging on.
There are many tropes in this book that are typical of many other young adult books. This doesn’t take anything away from the story though. The author spins such a fantastic tale.
I can’t recommend this book enough! It is one of my favorite books this year. If you loved the Grisha trilogy then I think you would be thrilled by this series! Give it a try. I promise that you will not be disappointed that you did!
Fantastic series. I fell in love with the characters. Great fantasy read.
Elemental magic and what seems like it will be a sprawling world! If you enjoyed my Threats of Sky and Sea series, I think you’ll eat this one up as well. I’m looking forward to reading the next book–Fire Falling–from what I hear, it only gets better from here!
THIS SERIES WILL KILL YOU IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY.
A very enjoyable story. I have read a lot of romance books and supernatural books in my life and have recently gotten into fantasy, and this book isn’t the best I’ve read (best ever: the black Mage series by Rachel E. Carter) but it is certainly a must read. The book shows an author with great talent and a lot of potential. The way she writes captures the reader and gets them invested in the story, by unanswered questions and mysteries that makes one have to keep reading to find out. Even after finishing the first book, there are still a lot of unanswered mysteries to make you as a reader interested in the next book of the series.
The book is filled with suspense, romance, drama and excitement; exactly what I look for in a book. The absolute best part in these kind of books for me is the chemistry between the characters and for the most part Elise Kova has succeeded with a great romance between Vhalla and Aldrik. Many book couples has disappointed me in the past, mainly because their relationship is obvious, boring and very “mutual” for lack of better word. Not this book though. Vhalla and Aldrik’s relations is all but mutual, and with mutual I mean that they don’t agree with each other all the time and there are twists and turns in their so called “friendship”. The reader gets to see how their different upbringings take part, arguments and different points of opinion, we get to discover their flaws that effect their relationship. It makes it seem more real and gives the book that flare that makes me feel with the characters and want to continue reading. To summarize it; it gives the book a lot of drama.
The only problem I had (and these are pretty small flaws of the book, mind you) is that the beginning is a bit slow paced. I mean sure, Vhalla gets kidnapped and finds out what she is which happens pretty much right away, but for me it takes too much time before she meets Aldrik. Before that we follow her life as a library apprentice for too long without much happening, which makes the book (for me at least) a bit boring in the first chapters. But, as soon as it picks up the pace the first chapters are pretty much forgotten and it becomes a page turner.
I was in the beginning somewhat doubtful about this book, mainly because several low reviews here on Amazon, but let me inform you who have not read it yet; I’m glad I gave it a shot and you should too, because you won’t regret it. I believe many can, and should, see what a promising author Elise Kova is and no matter what any other thinks I myself will continue reading her books.
Vhalla Yarl is just a library apprentice whose dreams are haunted by a dark man and magic. And then her world is turned upside down.
Air Awakens is set in a vivid world of magic and hatred where everyone wants something for themselves. Some think Vhalla will deliver that power to them and there appears to be nothing she can do, but what she is told.
A fantastic start to a great series.
I read the the whole series and its pretty good. check it out
Amazing. Just Amazing. Well written with great characters. The story so much fun to read. If you like magic and fantasy books this one is for you.
Vhalla is such a great character. She is the kind of person who you can connect with. The plot was new and exciting. It pulled me in and I could not get out. I cannot wait for the next one.
“A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond…”
I first picked up this series because I fell in love with the anime feel the cover gave. When I learned it was the first published book by the author I was a little hesitant to read it. What finally made me begin was the first book being .99¢ for the e-book on Black Friday. I fell in love with it. Also, I love reading about characters who also love to read. It is something I relate to.
Elise Kova released four books in the span of a year. The final book in this fantastic series is being released July 12th, 2016. I have never wanted a book so bad. She is an amazing author. All her characters are deep and developed. The world was perfectly crafted. I connected to almost all her characters.
*There may be slight spoilers*
Vhalla is just a normal girl. She loves to read and works in the palace library. The story is about her growing into the person she is forced to be. It follows her as she learns of love and loss. There are four different types of elemental magic. The sorcerers who wield them are called Airwalkers, Waterrunners, Groundbreakers, and Firebearers. Commons are taught to fear the Sorcerers. Most of all they fear their crowned prince Aldrik, or better known as the Fire Lord. When Vhalla was thrown into a new world and told to survive, she decided to thrive.
In every book, we got to learn more about the characters, the world, and its history. Everything was well thought out and planned. I just loved everything about this book.
Vhalla Yarl may only be an apprentice, ‘common-folk’ if you will, but she is every bit as normal as you and I. She experiences feelings of enjoyment in the library, reading and learning her trade. She knows she is not one a prince should dare look at, but that does not stop her from simple day-dreams. Sorcery (magic if you will) is not something taken lightly, many who possess such ability are not entirely open about it. Such knowledge is locked away; however, it is still an ability that some possess and Vhalla Yarl is only just beginning to awaken with such. Vhalla does not see herself as any extraordinary; however, there are those who beg to differ and they do try to show her and make her believe.
In this book, not only do we meet amazing characters, but have amazing adventures in amazing places. The Air Awakens world is unique; there is none other like it. In my case, it took me a while to get into the book. I don’t know why, but I did. But once I got into it, I was moving along and enjoying every second of it. There is intrigue and budding sentiments; a dashing young prince who goes by the title “The Heartbreaker Prince” and then there is the crown prince. But let’s not go to deeply, because you might not come back out of it. Believe me, I am still trying to get out of it, without much luck.
I have to say that it took me long enough! I’m in love with this book (series)! I can honestly say that I finally understand, and I wish I had jumped on th band-wagon sooner. I mean, I’ve been part of the Tower Guard for a while, but somehow couldn’t get into the series, things kept coming up. But I’ve finally read it, I love it; I want to keep reading the series and I know I will, like last week. Elise, you are an amazing author. I love the way everything unfolded. Vhalla’s Bond with Prince Aldrik was thoroughly thought out. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, the covers! Merilliza Chan, the cover artist, did an AMAZING job.
At first this was slow for me. I wasn’t interested in it but I was buddy reading with a friend so I put in the effort. By midway did it start to pick up for me.
Vhalla is a normal library apprentice who loves to read. One night she is called along with the other apprentices to the library in search of remedies for clerics to help heal the Crowned Prince from poison.
What Vhalla didn’t realize is that she produced little forms of magic when writing. Helping save the prince, the Tower notices her as an unawakened sorcerer.
Vhalla is torn between going to the tower or eradicating her powers and staying the simple life she has been living since she was eleven.
I found Vhalla to be a wonderful character. Prince Aldrik, I’m on the fence about. I don’t know how I feel for him. He’s moods change to much for my liking. He starts to open up little by little to Vhalla then something happens and he’s closed off again. So confusing.
I tend to stay way from most YA fantasy because most seem to just be the same thing but this was quite refreshing. Really original. Can’t wait to start the second book.
