Take one food writer named Cranky Agnes, add a hitman named Shane, mix them together with a Southern mob wedding, a missing necklace, two annoyed flamingos, and a dog named Rhett and you’ve got a recipe for a sexy, hilarious novel about the disastrous side of true love… Agnes Crandall’s life goes awry when a dognapper invades her kitchen one night, seriously hampering her attempts to put on a … a wedding that she’s staked her entire net worth on. Then a hero climbs through her bedroom window. His name is Shane, no last name, just Shane, and he has his own problems: he’s got a big hit scheduled, a rival trying to take him out, and an ex-mobster uncle asking him to protect some little kid named Agnes. When he finds out that Agnes isn’t so little, his uncle has forgotten to mention a missing five million bucks he might have lost in Agnes’s house, and his last hit was a miss, Shane’s life isn’t looking so good, either. Then a bunch of lowlifes come looking for the money, a string of hit men show up for Agnes, and some wedding guests gather with intent to throw more than rice. Agnes and Shane have their hands full with greed, florists, treachery, flamingos, mayhem, mothers of the bride, and–most dangerous of all–each other. “Agnes and the Hitman” is the perfect combination of sugar and spice, sweet and salty–a novel of delicious proportions.

Jennifer Crusie never disappoints. I love how well she writes dialogue and her characters make me want to stay in her world forever.
This was such a funny book and a romp through the daily tribulations of family crises. I loved how she dealt with it all by sailing into her kitchen and feeding her characters, which always seemed to diffuse potentially disastrous and hilarious situations.
Jennifer Cruise never fails to delight.
This is my favorite of the Crusie/Mayer partnership books. It might be because I love the book SHANE and the hero (who’s named Shane and is a hitman–kind of like an Old West gunfighter) references the classic movie lines or it might be because I love Agnes because she’s probably Jennifer Crusie’s most engaging and assertive heroine. Or it could …
I want to BE Agnes! I reread this when I need a pick me up. I have it in hardback, paper and now on my kindle app! Yeah Anges!
Any book by Jennifer Crusie is worth the read.
This is what you get when you pair up a romance writer with a guy who writes men’s adventure and thrillers: a story with equal helpings of fiery sex and firefights, secret missions and secret longings. It helps that Cruisie and Mayer seem to have tempered each other: the titular Agnes is a feisty grownup who’s handy with an iron skillet (to cook …
I kept thinking, “What else could go wrong?” And the author delivered.
Love this author…
I own this in hard cover, it’s one of my go-to favorites and I read it at least once a year. This is a funny, action packed book that I could totally picture as a block buster movie! The characters are fun and really draw you into the story. I can’t recommend it highly enough!
Please give us more of Agnes. This was the funniest, craziest book I have read in a long time. All the characters are ‘characters’ and you never know from one paragraph to the next what might happen.
Funny, laugh out loud story. I thoroughly enjoyed and will read anything these two write!
I absolutely LOVE this book&upon finishing I immediately searched for another one like it from author,as it made me look mad as I laughed out loud so many times.Twisty, turny &creative with characters so well written I felt like I was in their story with themI would love to find any other very similarly written &with so much laugh out loud …
Jennifer Crusie has always been one of my favorite authors, but this was not a good book! Too many unexplained characters, no real plot and very difficult to read through to the end!
Can’t get enough of Jennifer Crusie. And combining her writing with Bob Mayer was inspired and gives a different flavor to her books.
Jennifer Cruise’s biofuels are always witty and funny but this one is one of her best! Alice and her cohorts will keep you amused
There are unrealistic, over-the-top books that are still good, this wasn’t one of them.
This author never disappoints for a fun read.
Very unrealistic. Read half the book and gave up. Did not hold my interest. Gave 3 stars because I did hold out a little while before quitting.
I really wish there were more book by this pair of authors! I’ve read this book several times now, and enjoy it every time.
