This is a long story that has many difficulties in it that the characters have to deal with & resolve. I developed in a way I was not expecting which made it more interesting for me. Ms. Weaver’s works are engaging & I have enjoyed all the ones I have read.
Reese, her best friend Kaitlyn, and Kaitlyn’s brother Jem all go to England for a Regency immersive experience–where you dress and do activities that they did in the Regency era. Reese isn’t happy that Jem is along on the trip. Unbeknownst to the other Reese and Jem had a crush on each other but neither said anything or acted upon it until two years ago when Jem kissed Reese. Then he promptly left on a Broadway tour.
While on this Regency trip Reese, Kaitlyn and Jem get thrown back to 1850 England where Reese attracts the attention of Lord Gareth Hildebrand. This makes Jem finally decide to take action and let Reese know how he feels about her.
This is a fun read and part of the Twickenham series. Reese could never remember she wasn’t supposed to say certain things and constantly blurted out words that made no sense to those in 1850. She also let information slip about going to university forgetting women weren’t well educated back then.
I kind of got exasperated with Jem for not speaking up and just telling Reese how he felt. Really, the woman’s not a mind reader. Also when Reese overhears a conversation, she assumes she knows what’s going on instead of asking. These two needed to learn to communicate and sometimes had me rooting for Reese to choose Lord Hildebrand.
I really enjoy these time travel romances and like that they’re clean.
You will not go wrong with this one.
This is the first book of this series I have read or listen to and I adored it. Go to a party in England a pop you and your whole group get sent to the 1850s. Not only that but you have to spend one month there while a painting is done before you can go back to your time. The main characters Reese and Jem had been close but Jem had been stupid but now he has a chance maybe because fate may have another perfect mate for her. The author has written a wonderful book with a bit of a message. Kathleen Corbin did a great job as the narrator. This was a book you will not go wrong reading, listen to, our doing both I highly recommend. I did receive a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to review it.
Jim follows Rece for a full immersion regency experience in an Estate not too far from London. Little does he know that this estate offers more than meets the eye.
Clairese is only going on this regency experience because her best friend wants to go. However, when Jim comes along too, it leaves her grappling with emotions that she’d rather forget.
But then “the magic” chooses Rece for a great adventure? Will she fulfill her purpose? Will Jim be forced to leave her behind?
This is magical tale that has the magic spark of Pottermore, the romance of Austen, and the social awareness of Dickens.
I receive this ARC on StoryOrigin and I’m giving a voluntary review.
What an interesting tale of romance and choices. The protagonists started the story in our day, travel to regency era and came back all in between the pages of this book. This is a combination I wasn’t sure I would like but Donna K. Weaver manage beautifully. The old fashion ideals mix with today’s views were portrait in a great mix and challenges, all felt real and possible.
The story of how Reese’s crush on her best friend’s brother Jem, culminated in a kiss. This before he left her for two years to pursue his passion as actor and never contacted at all. And how after she believes she has move on, he re-enters her life as a group of friends travels to London on a trip and he comes as chaperon. Then in a re-enactment of a Regency party culminate with the friends being transported to the actual Regency era for a month. Once there the girls were introduced to the society as American heir looking for husbands. Reese is a strong woman and her position as such get her in a few problems with the era’s view. She manages to get along ok but frustrated with the era’s view of women. At the end the most unlikely widow cast his eye on her and she will have to make a decision that will not only change her but the Regency era forever.
Excellent, clean and powerful story for the whole family.
This is a great time travel, period romance. It not only gives you a feel of the Regency period but also illustrates well the difference in attitudes and expectations between then an now, all wrapped up in a enchanting romance. The narrator did a truly excellent job of drawing you into the story, her accents were authentic and she did both male and female voices well. I loved Reece’s refreshing character, she is strong willed, independent, caring and unable to mind her mouth. The relationship she formed had depth and her reactions appeared true to life. It was an excellent romance with great narration that left me wanting more stories in this world. I will look forward to more Twickenham Times audiobooks
This was a cute and adorable time travel story. It was fun to see how modern day people gave innovative ideas and made some people see they are worth more than they think. The love story between Clarice and James was entertaining, it took them being swept into the past to admit their feelings.
1. Book 1: Against the Magic: 5 stars
I received a free copy of the time traveler historical romance Against the Magic (Twickenham Full-Moon Ball Romance Book 1) by Donna K. Weaver and this review was given freely.
Jem returns home to reunite Reese only to follow her on a Regency experience to Great Britain. I just loved the Edna Mode comment and the Pride and Prejudice references! I don’t usually like time travel novels but the humor, banter and the attraction kept me enthralled. A great love story with a little history lesson, a happy ending and a hook.
Against the Magic is a brilliantly written, clever and engaging story. This paranormal, clean romance has magic, time travel and humour interwoven into a wonderful story combining Victorian England with contemporary America. I definitely recommend this book to everyone. Even if you don’t normally read historical romances I suggest you read this one, you will not be disappointed. I couldn’t put this book down and can’t wait to read the other books in this mini series.
Against the Magic is a different take on time travel. One usually associates this genre with one person taking a trip through a time warp, but in this case a whole group descended on 1850 together with interesting results. Although customs and lifestyle were different, this book does bring out that basic human nature remains the same. Time travel is not my favourite genre, but because I will read anything written by Ms Weaver I took a chance on this book and to my surprise I found my interest engaged. I enjoyed all the characters, even though some of them challenged my rational brain. Reese’s adjustment to early Victorian England was perhaps the most difficult, but she too found that there were ways in which she could make a difference. Jem’s character was charming, but it did seem that he had to come to a place where he made choices for the right reasons. I’m not sure whether Against the Magic has changed my view on fantasy, but it was a fun read with a happy ending. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this was my honest and voluntary review.

Against the Magic (Twickenham Full-Moon Ball Romance Book 1), my second read from author Donna K. Weaver and my first in the highly enjoyable Twickenham Full-Moon Ball Romances, was a highly enjoyable romance. I wish I could get more read & review books in this series. I was given a Kindle copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it. I’ll be reading more from her as I already own 8 more of her books. A well-written story from a very good author. No spoilers from me. You need to buy and read the book then leave a review. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
Really enjoyed this story. I love the Twickenham Time Travel Romance Series. This is my first audiobook so have nothing to compare it to. I enjoyed listening and was amazed the narrator was able to use separate voices for the characters and keep them straight.
I received a free copy and this is my voluntary, honest review.
I received a copy for my honest review.
I will preface this by saying I read A LOT of historical fiction, maybe to the point of craziness. If I didn’t, I would likely rate it higher, because it is well written. Also, I listened to the audio and didn’t care for the narrator. This is when I’m wishing the content and narrator received different star counts like an Audible review. I struggled to fall in love with the characters because of their dislike of the era they time traveled too. They complained multiple times by comparing modern culture and advancements to a time period that is generally glamorized and appreciated. I agree that most of us would be inconvenienced and possibly annoyed but how cool would it be to time travel in the first place?? I am possibly (definitely!) asserting my own POV and wish Jem and Reese agreed.
I look forward to reading more from this author.
