I can’t put this book down. The author is so powerful in recalling the events of her mother’s murder that you feel as if you are right there with her. I’m also touched by how she is able to make allowances for the many people who failed her during and after the crime. She tells her story beautifully. I hope she continues to write because she is obviously a very talented writer.

A compelling true story of a daughter’s life after her mother’s murder. Not a dull page in the book.

I live in Maine and remember when this happened and it was very sad and scary at the time. Very informative. Sara was very courageous and how she loved her Mother. Very tragic for her and how she had to be strong and survive.

The story of a murder, the child who lived and how the murderer was eventually found. Pulls no punches on the effects of having your mother murdered nor how stupid people can be. Very well written and fascinating. Loved it.

This is a sad story, of course, but it’s also about rising above circumstances. And the author has clearly done that. (But I have to say that her grandparents seemed to be the poster-children of why some people should not have children. And why birth-control is the best invention of the 20th century!)
Still this story shows so much how our childhoods shape us. Both Crystal’s childhood as well as Sara’s.

This writer lived this story. And she relates it back to us through beautifully built but painful to read sentences. The truth is faced and we face it with her. This is my truth the little girl says. This is my truth the adult says. I felt the tension all the way through the book. The book that I never could put down until I knew that truth and the story that never ends for her ended with an answer for me. There is no sloppy sentiment here. No feeling sorry for self. Just the horrendous theft of a childhood and loss of a mother that was faced up to and skillfully presented to the reader. Worth it.

I had watched the Forensic Files account of Crystal Perry’s murder, but I found her daughter’s book an honest, raw and enlightened account from her viewpoint. Sarah Perry is a brillant writer who made me feel as if I had an insider’s view of this terrible crime, and the struggles she faced as a 12 year old who had to make some very mature decisions after her young mother was taken from her.Through this well written story, I came to see Crystal as a young, single mother who worked hard to provide for her daughter and herself. Sarah should continue to write as she is a very gifted writer.

This was a tragic story about the traumatic effects a mother’s murder had on the life of her daughter. Although I felt at times it was too long, it was necessary for the daughter to work out these details as a healing process to be able to live out the rest of her life. It was painful to read as she describes the confusion and helplessness she experiences as she grew up with no closure, always wanting to be accepted and loved with varying results. It was extremely thought provoking and makes one fully realize how many lives are effected by such a loss.

Well written. I felt for the author’s dilemma. How does anyone find a way to recover from a tragedy? I admired her perseverance and determination to not let this decide the direction of her life.
