Even though Chloe has done everything right, some think Chloe should have to pay for her father’s sins and a series of attacks has her taking refuge in the notorious Institute of Paranormal Studies. Chloe sees it as a second chance and she believes she has nothing to lose, but nothing could be further from the truth. Levi knows what the sassy woman who entered his domain is at first glance. She is a relic so ancient that even an elder lord descended from the first immortals has reason to fear her and he knows that he should slit her throat while he has the chance.
This vampire romance thrills readers even as it stuns them with a fascinating world full of strong, convincing characters. Chloe and Levi have some sizzling chemistry but most of the story has them trying to stay away from each other. Chloe is a survivor one that readers can’t help but admire as a heroine as she struggles for her place in a world that she doesn’t really understand and this story mostly focuses on her and the steps she takes to move forward. The romance between Levi and Chloe explodes into passion about the same time that Chloe’s life takes an unexpected turn.
The plot is steady paced and builds the suspense to thrilling and chilling proportions throughout the story with some unexpected and stunning twists that keeps readers glued to the pages. This story focuses on mostly Levi and Chloe in a fascinating university setting (think Hogwarts for supes) and a very intriguing world of vampires and supes with some refreshingly different elements but also has a conflict and an enemy that has been building up some very complex and nefarious plans for some time that is spread out throughout the series which readers won’t want to miss.

Harry Potter meets Vampire Academy for adults
As soon as I read author Hettie Ivers endorsement of this book I immediately one-clicked. What did Hettie Ivers have to say you may wonder:
“Highly recommend you #OneClick this 1st book in an epic new paranormal series by May Sage! If you’re like me and found yourself rereading the Harry Potter books wishing the students were college-aged and that Severus Snape and Remus Lupin had been written to look like dead-sexy male supermodels who snuck into castle dorm rooms at night to leave sleeping draughts for young coeds, then you’re gonna flip your wizard cloak After Darkness Falls.”
With some books it may take a chapter or a couple of chapters before I’m invested in the character and drawn into the story (some books fail to draw me in at all).
This book had me at the very first sentence:
“Just because a piece of advice was given by a serial killer didn’t necessarily mean that it was wrong.”
I am so very, very glad that I followed author Hettie Ivers recommendation and one-clicked this book.
After Darkness Falls was a captivating read.
So well written, excellently paced and the characters, the world, the scenery and story had me and have me still, completely absorbed. (I want to live in this world!)
I finished reading this story and immediately wanted to dive back into the world that May Sage has created.
The charismatic characters are unforgettable and I want to know the story of each and every character that I encountered in this book.
Are you curious to learn more about this fantastic book?
Okay.
Chloe Miller is 26 years old and after surviving a series of attacks, her mentor and boss sends her off to The Institute of Supernatural Studies aka The Academy, a very exclusive university run by supernaturals (sups). A university where every student has to be recommended/sponsored by two supernaturals in order to attend.
Even before her first day, Chloe is embroiled in mystery.
She is being targeted by unknown forces and will need the help of alluringly sexy vampire Levi DeVillier along with her newfound friends if she’s to survive.
Action, Suspense, Magical Thrills and Chills, with a dash of Sexiness and Romance thrown in.
This book is a must read.
Highly Recommended
After Darkness Falls is a fantastic book! This paranormal romance had me intrigued from the very beginning. As if Jessie along with her other Shadow Walker band mates weren’t already interesting enough, toss in Merrick, a sexy hot vampire with all the other hot characters in this book along with the amazing storyline that just blew me away! I absolutely loved this book! May Sage is a very creative author and I’m looking forward to her other books as well!
I am a fan of May Sage’s paranormal fantasy romances, which are generally lighter (if steamy by young adult standards). For me, this novel is a significant departure in style. She still has the feisty independent heroine and the mysterious hero (?). This is the first time that she ventured into the paranormal university/high school genre. I was expecting something like the usual teen/young adult romance set in a Hogwarts-style world and school. This is grittier, darker and has the potential to compete favourably with J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Legacy books. I definitely want to see how these characters and this world develops.

This is a very intriguing book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I definitely recommend it. The characters are unique but they’re also everyday folks. Friends we get close to.
This story hooked me from the beginning. It reminded me a little bit of an adult Harry Potter story in that the 25-year-old heroine is sent to the paranormal institute to get her education, and all the characters attend or are connected to the school–but that’s where the similarity ends.
I loved the world-building. The story was richly detailed without being overly detailed. I would not call this a romance, but a paranormal with romantic elements. The hero/heroine do get an HEA, but the romance is not central to the story. It’s more about the heroine discovering who/what she is.
If you love vamps, witches & the paranormal After Darkness Falls is a must read.
I’m on to book two…
Interesting story line – Loved it – characters are funny and heart warming – fast read – can’t put it down once you start.
Wonderful read by a new-to-me author! I loved it. The FMC in this book is Chloe and I loved her. She doesn’t take crap from anyone. Chloe and Levi have real chemistry. There was only one steamy scene and I would have liked more romantic scenes (not necessarily sex scenes) but it is still a very enjoyable read. The writing is great and the story is so interesting and I just could not put it down. I am hooked! I cannot wait to read the next book. 4.5 stars

When a first sentence starts like this:
“Just because a piece of advice was given by a serial killer didn’t necessarily mean it was wrong.” You know you are in for a treat.
The main protagonist is Chloe a sweet waitress who is accepted by the vampires and witches as one of their own. What she has is a dark past and murderers who are after her. The one thing that might save her is the supernatural University hidden from the rest of the world, the only way to see it is to be invited – that is where the Harry Potter theme begins and ends. Well written, great world building and well-rounded characters. Blood, mayhem and love what’s not to like? Levi needed someone like her to make his knees weak.
As Darkness Falls by May Sage is an amazing read about the beginning of vampires. This story had me enthralled with its entrancing storyline about its unique main character Chloe Miller. Chloe Miller is a young woman trying to survive in a world that is turned against her because of her family lineage. As the plot develops, Chloe will eventually figure out why this has happened and eventually who she can trust. This is a fascinating and unusually compelling book written about a very different type of paranormal world than you find in most of the average paranormal books! This is a great read for anyone who enjoys reading a paranormal book full of mystery, suspense, action adventure, and of course romance. As Darkness Falls is a compelling book of the paranormal world!
#NotYourChildsHarryPotter (In the best way! )
After Darkness Falls is so much more than the first book in another promising vampire series—it’s paranormal world-building and storytelling at its best! Packed with enough suspense and intrigue to keep you flipping pages as you try and guess how the overall storyline will play out, you’ll find yourself simultaneously wanting to savor every character introduced, and crossing your fingers they’ll get their own book within the series. Because after Darkness Falls is the birth of an epic grownup Harry-Potter-meets-Vampire-Academy saga that’s been woefully missing from our adult guilty-pleasure reading lives for far too long!!!
With this first book in the series, Sage introduces a rich cast of diverse supernatural characters interwoven into a complex contemporary paranormal alternate world that will have you trading your childhood dreams of attending Hogwarts for adult fantasies of attending the prestigious Institute of Supernatural Studies—where the staff and student body include vampires, huntsmen, werewolves, dragons, faes, gods, and other manner of devastatingly hot and powerful alpha-male superbeasts in possession of killer abs as well as quick wit and a knack for charming repartee.
If you’re like me and have found yourself rereading the Harry Potter books wishing the students were college-aged and that Severus Snape and Remus Lupin had been written to look like dead-sexy male supermodels who snuck into castle dorm rooms at night to leave sleeping draughts for young coeds, then you’re gonna flip your wizard cloak over After Darkness Falls!
I wanted to like After Darkness Falls, but it just fell a little flat for me. Despite an interesting premise, the plot didn’t show up until close to the end. The little bit of romance there was wasn’t very believable or romantic. Despite the age of the characters, it reads mostly like YA except for one scene.
The idea of supernatural creatures coexisting with humans publicly and going to an institute of higher learning for supernaturals in Scotland? Pretty cool. Unfortunately, it just didn’t click with me. The way it ended was really more of a beginning and I feel that it would make more sense to continue with Chloe and Levi’s story for a bit — as it felt quite unfinished to me.
However, the writing was still good and I would read more from this author.
Wow! Just wow! May Sage has done it again! She’s created a series that just sucks you in right away. She makes the best characters and weaves the best tales. She’s definitely a master of her craft and I will continue to devour what she creates.
I will do the series
4 out of 5 Stars
After Darkness Falls was a good read with lots of action and little romance. I enjoyed the story but was looking for a little more romance than one scene.
Good characters, action packed story a bit of a cliff hanger to see what happens to Chloe and Levi I’ll have to read Blood of a Huntsman: After Darkness Falls book #2 coming out at the end of May 2019.
