This was a great story if I could have gotten around the choppy telling of it. The author switched points of view that left the story feeling disjointed. Still the characters were relatable and the story was intense.
I enjoyed this book. The story was amazing and I loved the characters. Definitely will read more from
this author.
Emily DeKanter did an amazing job bringing these characters to life.
This book had it’s ups and downs.
Brock, my heart breaks for the man. Going through a divorce and just trying to make sure he is able to spend as much time with his kids as he can, he loses his family to a house fire. Having nobody to blame, and with reason since the fire was due to faulty wiring, and dealing with survivors guilt, Brock is headed for a mental break.
Where the author really lost me with this was the involvement of the PI’s. I guess I had assumed that Shirley and Janie would have a more prominent role in the story rather than just having the author describe the two women and their relationships or lack of relationships. When the Goldwyn twins are kidnaped it’s not until like the 80% mark that the PI’s are being brought in and by then they police honestly already had a decent starting point with suspects.
In the future when it comes to more of these stories I hope that the PI’s have a more engaging role with the mysteries. I mean the books are named after them…
This mystery was very disjointed and hard to follow at times. I loved Brock’s part of the story. His anguish and psyche was well written and my heart broke for him. The story focuses on the kidnapping of Ruby and Landon Goldwyn’s twins and this where the author excels. The pain of the parents jumps off the pages. In desperation, Ruby finally reaches out to Shirley and Janie. I was expecting to read a more Holmes-type mystery with Shirley and Jamie having a larger role. This has potential for a great series.
If you know nothing about the first Sherlock and Holmes, here’s the version for this generation. To me the beginning was a little slow, sometimes a little confusing when reading several people’s opinions at the same time. But I thoroughly enjoyed the characters , the story wasn’t boring. In my opinion beta readers would be a great help on this book. ( K.R. Hall’s others books are amazing)
I love good mysteries and feel that Watson/Holmes have the potential to be good leads for a series. That said, the writing was very uneven. A few paragraphs would be devoted to descriptions of houses, etc, while major pieces of action would often be relegated to a sentence or two. As another reviewer noted, there were also some typos. It was a little distracting. I hope this author continues to hone her craft so we can see more of Shirley and Janie in the future.
