Shapeshifter Romance. This full-length novel can be read as a stand-alone.The Whitfield Rancher1.Evan2.David3.Joshua4.Adam 5.Adrian 6.Blake (Coming 11/4/2019)Mason Jane Barnhart had nothing left to live for. She was dying and there was nothing anyone could do about it. Rather than suffer a long agonizing death, she wanted it to be on her terms. She’d let the icy water claim her, and if she was … the icy water claim her, and if she was lucky, she wouldn’t suffer.
Oliver Whitfield had been watching the girl. He couldn’t believe that anything could be so bad as to want to take her own life. But when she jumped from the bridge he had to go in after her. His tiger, bigger and stronger, would have to save her. When they got her to shore, Evan said that changing her was the only thing that would save her. Oliver didn’t want to, but he couldn’t let her die. He had a strange feeling that she was supposed to be the mate to one of his sons.
Adrian wasn’t sure he was ready for a mate. The timing wasn’t right. He still had so much left to do while running for public office, and if word got out that she tried to take her own life, he’d have that scandal to deal with too. But when he caught her scent, he knew, she was his and all thoughts of not being ready for a mate fled his mind.
When Mason opened her eyes, she was fit to be tied. She wasn’t supposed to be here, she was supposed to be dead. That’s what she wanted. What had those meddling Whitfields done now?

‘Adrian’ is book five of Kathi S. Barton’s “The Whitfield Rancher” series. I’m going to say this right off, the author completely shattered my heart at the beginning of the book and then put it back together with all the love, loyalty, laughter, comradery, and family. Oh, don’t get me wrong, there’s plenty of drama, angst, and suspense going in this storyline and yet I think this one gives so much more emotion, so much more introspection from the characters and so much growth. This is my favorite to date!
While the synopsis of this book says it can be read as a standalone, I honestly wouldn’t read it alone because many times in Kathi’s books the previous book starts the beginning of the follow-up book or at least introduces the characters a bit better, rather than feeling like you’re jumping straight in.
Mason is dying. Past trauma has left her in the position she now finds herself in; standing on a bridge ready to end her life to save her father unnecessary pain. However, she’s granted a second-chance at life when Oliver Whitfield intervenes and changes her.
Adrian is trying to work his way up the political ladder, to hopefully find himself as president. When his family informs him, of his father saving a woman and want him to go to the hospital to see if she might possibly be his mate, he isn’t the happiest of people. Every part of his life is under scrutiny, and having a mate/wife who tried to commit suicide may hurt his campaign.
What starts out as a rough start to a relationship, soon has Adrian wondering why he ever thought he couldn’t have a mate and his career. However, there is unfinished business that must be stopped and Adrian must decide if he is ready to start a presidential campaign.
One really big issue I had with this book was the group of guys who kept Mason hostage and abused her was mentioned having done the same thing to many women prior and after Mason. However, there is inconsistencies on whether they were living or all dead…Trey (I think that’s his name) says Mason is the only woman that got away from them because they had killed all the others. However, Dylan says that she had found some of the other women beside a few that had already died from the disease…so which was it?!?
