Mages. Sirens. Demons. Dragons. Gryphons. A Federal Paranormal Unit. Attackers of magic. The Mercy Temple Chronicles will hook you!Mercy Temple lives in a world where paranormals are a thing. Humans know of their existence, but the two species don’t interact. Or so it is thought. She works for a bounty hunter, doing any job he needs done. From killing someone, to finding someone, to bringing them … finding someone, to bringing them in. She has a love/hate relationship with the bounty hunter. He knows her secret and that’s how he keeps her working for him. But still, he pays her well.
Rafael is a demon. He isn’t a good guy, but not a bad guy either. He wants to know Mercy’s secret, but he has one of his own. He works for the Federal Paranormal Unit. Undercover. And he is hunting the same person she is.
Warning: Unputdownable action-packed fantasy, with mages, sirens, demons, dragons, gryphons and a Federal Paranormal Unit.

An enticing start to a new series.
Mercy Temple is a bounty hunter who is being blackmailed by her employer due to her past. She is given a job to hunt down a powerful mage and if she fails it will mean either death or her secret being revealed. Rafael is a demon who is a federal agent, and he too is searching for the mage. The two of them end up working together to try and catch the mage, but both have different agendas.
I enjoyed both Mercy’s and Rafael’s characters. Both had dark pasts that they kept hidden. I like how the author didn’t info dump their past lives but deftly sprinkled hints and crumbs throughout the story. There were many of different types of supernatural races used in the book and it made a nice change from the usual vampire/shifter characters used in most Urban Fantasy. The pacing on the book was great and at no time did I feel it dragged.
The one issue I had with the book was the first person POV. The first third of the book is written from Mercy’s POV then a chapter comes out of nowhere from Rafael’s POV. This was jarring as I read about three pages in before realizing that it wasn’t Mercy. When I went back to the beginning of the chapter, it did have Rafael listed in the heading. From that point the POV switches each chapter between the two POV’s. As Rafael’s POV ended up being a big part of the story, I think the book written in third person would have been a better choice.
My minor gripe aside, there was a lot to like, and I look forward to seeing where the series goes.
Let’s start with the little non-secret, Mercy is the name of our main character, Mercy Temple to be exact. She is also a bounty hunter, the bounty hunter for the supernatural citizens of the city. Humans and supes (as they are called in the story) live in the city but pretty much stay to their own part of town.
Generally speaking, Mercy goes after the ones who harm those who do not volunteer to be food, or are killed while serving as sustenance to vampires or what have you.
Now Mercy is after one of the “what have you” types. While she is strong (what is she???) there is concern that this particular target is stronger. Oh yeah, there is also the Federal bureau that fights those supes as well. They do it “legally.”
The attraction between the fed and Mercy looks like it could be a stumbling block to the capture of this super bad perpetrator.
Fight scenes are pretty well draw out in a manner that will not give young readers nightmares, but there are references to sexual desire. On the plus side there is a morsel of what’s to come that has me wanting to know just what Mercy is and why do the supes want to defend her, now?
A fun-packed ride in the supernatural world. Action, romance, and sarcasm. A great way to escape the day -to-day humdrum of quarantine during these Covid-19 days.
This story follows Mercy Temple, a bounty hunter in a world where human, demon, vampire, etc all know of each other but attempt to remain mostly segregated in zones of human or supernatural referred to as supes. Her background is a bit of a mystery that slowly comes out through this first book. This is the first of a series. In the first book she runs up against a Federal agent that is also a demon when both of them are tracking the same wanted mage. Their interaction becomes more and more entangled as they attempt to work at a common cause although for conflicting outcomes. Good story and kept my attention throughout and the sample chapter of book 2 is good to pull you into the next chapter.
Wonderfully entertaining story with mages, sirens, demons, dragons and gryphons.
Good read
Be prepared to wait for the second book because you are going to want to read it as soon a you finish the first one. It was kind of hard to figure out the bad people from the good ones but I did enjoy reading it.
I’ve read several Mercy books. Love them all
As you get to know the real Mercy, you begin to like the hidden gem of this personality. Her demon ‘partner’ has his own nightmare but finds ways to live life in a world full of real monsters. You hope that the two will eventually realize the strength that comes from deep trust in another.
I ordered the 2nd & 3rd books after reading the first. It was that good!
I am not big on romance, the romance, but the romance was subsumed by the plot.
Fantastic book. I am currently reading the whole series. I cant put them down.
I got this book for free and started reading it just for something different. Finished it in one sitting and then bought the next one in the series…and the next and have almost finished, i think, the entire series. The author takes the point of view of each of the two main characters and i was certain that there was no way i would enjoy it. However, these books are an amazingly great read.
Really great fun to read.
