I just finished reading this 4 book series and I’m not even sure I know where to begin….first off, if Amazon would let me this would be a 10 star read instead of 5 stars.
This was my first exposure to this author and I can truly say I will be a fan girl ! This series had everything, a true emotional roller coaster at times, sick and depraved, at other times full of loyalty and love. I loved watching Stella and Sinclair’s character grow and change throughout the series. And Lucius and Teddy…well what can you say…I loved these three brothers together and separately.
Stella’s father was a real surprise and the stepbrother, Dylan, well suffice it to say, he got what he deserved. Nice job Stella!
The author took us on an emotional journey and I loved all the hours I spent steeped in this web of affluent secret society insanity! Bravo Celia Aaron…keep them coming!
This was truly a dark read that was full of so many twists and turns, emotions and gut wrenching scenes of every kind. I was sucked into this series from the first page and was saddened when it ended. I felt as though I was on an intense ride that was propelling me higher and higher and not showing any signs of letting up. The character chemistry is built on intensity, trust and hate. The characters, themselves, offer different sides and views into their own lives and those they touch. I am definitely a new fan of Celia Aaron. She writes dark romance in such a way that you actually develop a “relationship” with the characters and begin to feel/understand who they are, what they feel and why they do what they do. Nothing is as it seems and family love and loyalty goes deep. This book is full of triggers…you’ve been warned!
I was terribly remiss in not writing a review of this series as soon as it came out. It was actually my first exposure to this author, but turned out to be far from the last. One might assume some comparison to Pepper Winters’ The Indebted series (which I had read beforehand), but that would be a mistake and CA did a bang-up job in half the number of books as Indebted. This series is as much like that series as one mystery novel is the same as another. Somehwat similar in subject matter, yet entirely different in content. Furthermore, the author created a completely different world and scenario that utterly captivated me with the kick-ass heroine and an unpredictable, action-packed, nailbiting plotline. I actually bought the novels individually and then bought the complete set when it published, which proves just how much I like the series. After you finish this series, I recommend The Dark Protector, which is one of my absolute favorite novels and just happens to be by this author, as well — followed by The Bad Guy and Blackwood. Actually, I really like all her books!
This is one of those stories that I can try and review, but no matter what something will be missing, some thought not expressed correctly. I will try my best to hit the major parts that I think are important for any reader who is thinking about this story.
First, read all the stories! Do not stop and do not think that one book is enough to judge this story on. I HIGHLY recommend this boxed set as it makes the reading experience so much more. Each of these three stories is an integral part of the whole and cannot be read as standalone. You must also read them in order: Counselor, Magnate, and Sovereign. The stories each have a different vibe and contain different aspects of the story that the readers needs to view the whole story.
Second, understand that yes this book is dark, the dark scenes are not for the light of heart, but they make this story everything that it is. You need those emotions, that darkness to truly enjoy the HEA. Going into this story I was prepared for loads and loads of darkness but I was surprised that there was way less darkness than expected. There are four major scenes that contain about 95% of the darkness and the rest of the story is about the connection of the main characters, their development of their relationship, and the bonds of a family. The dark was DARK, but the light was there also.
Third, do not judge these characters until the very last word! Trials and tribulations, heartbreak and healing, you must take it all in before you form your opinion of these people. Before you question their choices try and think about what you would do in their position. This was a very emotional story and it takes the entire set before the reader understands.
Lastly, when reading a story I like to be a step ahead of the characters and know things before they do. I feel like this helps me to digest the characters choices better as I can spend more time on understanding them and their choices rather than trying to “catch up” with the plot. In this story, as a reader, I did not learn anything about the acquisition or the rules until the main character Stella did. I liked to be prepared to the next step in the story, but I can understand why the author wrote it the way she did. It kept me on the edge of my seat and wholeheartly involved in the action.
I hope this review helps a little. It is my opinion that you just have to read the story to understand. I LOVED this story and it will be in my favorites file. I will read it again in the future. If you have any questions that you would like answer I am more than willing to give out any answers I can, just message me. Happy reading.
Celia takes you to a whole nother world with this series. Sinclair needs an Acquisition and Stella is what he wants and what he gets. This book is a powerful story on what a woman can and will go through to save herself and the people she loves. I could not put this book down the first or second time I read it.
