I don’t really know how I feel about this one. It had its charm I guess, and quirky characters, but at the same time it only scratched the surface of what a story it could have been.
It all felt very … shallow, shall we say. I was not into the main character Marj. While the story tried to convince me she was a humble compassionate character she came across as a vain sex crazed gold digger. This was mainly because of how obsessed she was with her looks and finding mister Right to marry based on his income and looks. Of course, trying to later tell me this was not the case with her cold feet and turning down things her boss Brandon was offering might have put her in a better light, if the story didn’t lack both characterization and depth.
I can agree with many that this book felt like many other books plot wise and that lack of depth to it didn’t help make it stand out either. I mean, the characters banter was somewhat enjoyable and quirky enough to stand out, but it didn’t help build a personality to either book or characters. As a matter of fact I feel like the story was a bit too dependent on the dialogues and because of that didn’t have much else to contribute storytelling-wise. Still, their banter was sweet and their situation intriguing so the book wasn’t necessarily bad. Had it had more complexity to it and a bit more to the story other than banter I might have considered reading on to part two.
One thing though that really bothers me, that I also have mentioned in my review of Groomless by Sierra Rose, is how disingenuous and misleading the author’s strategy is with her books, releasing three parts of the same story and charging all of them individually as one entire book each instead of each a third of a book. It’s so sketchy and reeks of greed for money that I can smell it a mile away. That is also the reason why I won’t continue on reading this book. It is unreasonable and also quite disrespectful of the author to expect her readers to pay trice as much as one book should cost just to read the book to the end. Unless the price of part two and three gets lowered this will probably be it for me with Accidentally Married to the Billionaire.
