NATIONAL BESTSELLER
On a London riverbank, when the body of small-time crook Mickey Parfitt washes up with the tide, no one grieves. But William Monk, commander of the River Police, is puzzled by the murder weapon: an elegant scarf whose original owner was obviously a man of substance. Dockside informers lead Monk to a floating palace of corruption on the Thames managed by Parfitt, where a band … Parfitt, where a band of half-starved boys is held captive for men willing to pay a high price for midnight pleasures. Though Monk and his fearless wife, Hester, would gladly reward Parfitt’s killer, duty leads them in another direction–to an unresolved crime, to a deadly confrontation with some of the empire’s most respected men, and ultimately to a courtroom showdown with Monk’s old friend, Oliver Rathbone, in a trial of nearly unbearable tension and suspense.

Anne Perry portrays characters and the era so well.
This is an excellent book. I love learning about the Victorian era. I have never read an Anne Perry book that isn’t just good, but spectacular.
The books in the Williiam Monk Series are always excellent.
really enjoyed this book
Vivid characters with a intriguing plot.
Great author. I like her style and characters.
My first Anne Perry. Excellent!
I don’t much care for Perry’s war books, but eagerly read her Monk and Pitt series. The plots are always good and I enjoy her perspective on social issues of the Victorian era.
With the way things ended in the previous book, ‘Execution Dock’, I was chomping at the bit to read this one. It picked up that horrid dangling thread and finally gave it closure. Yeah baby, did it give closure. I’m still reeling a bit from all the emotional responses I had at various times to this story. Like many of the previous William Monk …
One of Anne Perry’s best and the best of the William Monk Series.
I enjoy historical novels, especially from British Iles. has twists and turns but also gives a look back to the life of the times and the class differences seen them.
I was mesmerized by this book. I love stories with witches and the minions were a great touch- scary, but almost amusing. The ending, linking the events to a place in a Stephen King story, was a great touch. I am ready for a sequel.
Love this author. Once again a great book.
Anne Perry always gives perfect period depiction and drama to her novels. I have read and will to continue to read her Monk series. She shows us the undercurrent of a prestigious society that is often thought of as faultless. She also shows the poverty that existed during that time. Good read.
I like William and Hester Monk
Good read
All of Anne Perry ‘s books are good. This one depends heavily on the previous one in the series, however.
As usual, Anne Perry delivers a fantastic read! I unconditionally recommend this and all of her other books.
I have read almost every book Anne Perry has written. Once you start her book you do not want put it down. She holds your attention, you really want to know what happens next. Anne Perry is one of my favorite authors.
Wonderful addition to Anne Perry’s Monk series!
