Magic is dangerous. I should know. It got me a thirty-year sentence scrubbing toilets for a scumbag wizard. My only hope is the Unleashing, a ceremony that unlocks the dormant powers of magical descendants when we turn eighteen. Since my mom was a lowly psychic, I don’t expect to be blessed with much more than the ability to forecast the weather. But when the sorcerers unlock my magic, all hell … sorcerers unlock my magic, all hell breaks loose. Turns out, I’m not a wizard, witch, or even a sorcerer. I’m…something else.
Because of my unique abilities, I’m required to attend the Academy of Sorcery until I learn to harness and control my magic. Not only that, but the three sexiest and most powerful sorcerers on campus are assigned to guard me night and day. Jackpot, right?
Not quite.
Turns out these guys aren’t too happy with the arrangement, and they show it by making my life hell. That’s just the beginning of my troubles. The mean-girl squad declares open season on me, a mysterious woman attacks me every time I step off campus, and my professor is too hot for his own good. And when it’s time to find a weapon to help me master my abilities, my magic chooses… a spork.
It’s going to be a long year.
*This is a Reverse Harem series perfect for readers who enjoy:
+light bully romance & enemies-to-lovers
+college academies
+student-teacher forbidden romance
+badass heroine who holds her own against alpha males
+fun, fast-paced reads
more
Reading the blurb, I was hooked at spork 🙂 James and Phoenix have created an interesting paranormal world. Jade is basically an indentured servant, but she just turned 18 and everyone with possible magic, has to go to the Unleashing when they turn 18. Jade’s magic is unleashed and she finds her
Self immediately taken to the Academy with 3 sorcerers as her guards. Their is tension between Jade and her guards, mean girls, humor, and a sassy spork 🙂 I can’ wait to see what happens next!
Academy of Sorcery 1: Unleashing Trials by Alexa B. James is a wonderful story that I have read. This is book number one in this wonderful start to a brand new series that I have fallen in love with. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about magic, reverse harem and parnormal romance.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Hotter than hot!! Loved the sexual tension between the characters and I’m glad this book didn’t jump into anything sexual too quickly. So it gave them time to gradually get to know each other and for their personalities to come out. As well as build on the guys (Thorn, Rocco, Ryker and Darius) relationship with Jade (the MFC). A steamy book but also a great story too. Can’t wait for book 2
This is the first term in the Academy of Sorcery Series, a Paranormal Reverse Harem Series. Jade is a fantastic character, strong, and sassy. Her three powerful sorcerer guards, Rocco, Thorn, and Ryker are alpha, are intriguing. Professor Darius is handsome, protective, and enigmatic. Asher is an amazing supporting character. The world building is fantastic, original, and intriguing, filled with magic, action, mystery, lust, and slow burn romance. The storyline is intricate, fun, entertaining, and intriguing. The light bully, and the forbidden romance, are a great addition to the story. Marnye Young has a beautiful voice, very pleasant to listen to, and easy to understand. She did an outstanding job with the narration. This is a great introduction to the Series, and I can’t wait to listen to Fallen Master, the next book in the Series. If you like RH Paranormal Romance, this Series is definitely for you!
4 stars for Unleashing Trials: Year One by Alexa B. James and Athena Phoenix. This is book one in the Academy of Sorcery series. This is a semi slow burn paranormal reverse harem. I will say it also has some forbidden student-teacher elements, that are oh so hottttttt! This is also my first book from these authors. The story about how magic not being unleashed until they are 18 is original and unique. Jade doesn’t think she is going to have much power but apparently, she has sex magic. (I know right! Sign me up for some of that magic Please.) There were some parts I didn’t like and that’s why the 4 stars . I just didn’t like how fast Jade was to forgive the guys for what they did. (Not going to tell you) I am enjoying the storyline and characters, so it is making up for that little bit I didn’t like. I am looking forward to seeing what the next book has in store for Jade.
This was my first book by this cowriting duo and I really enjoyed the storyline and thought the narration was done very well (not a surprise with how amazing Marnye Young always is!). The story was funny and unpredictable and had loads of tension and sexy times. I did like Jade, Asher, and some of the guys (especially the professor!!), but there were things that kinda took me out of the story a bit which is why I gravitated toward 4 instead of 5 stars for the story (the whiplash I was getting from the guys. It wasn’t as smooth as it could have been. I was having issues remembering where they each stood, especially Ryker). I think the idea about her having her important item stolen didnt 100% make sense. With all the power at this school, why couldn’t they trace it and figure out where it had been/touched it. I understand it was under wards/spells, but the 4 most powerful beings at the school couldn’t take down a couple freshies? I also thought the ending was kinda out of nowhere (in terms of the guys and their relationships) so that kinda took me for a spin. I think this could have been fleshed out a bit more to help with that transition. But overall I was hooked into the audiobook and would listen to more in this series. I
For the narration, Marnye always does a fabulous job. I love her different actions and inflections. She really brings characters to life and makes the story so believable! She always is on my “must listen to” list, hasn’t steered me wrong yet!
Hope book 2 is out soon, I want to know what happens next! I don’t has as much time to read books anymore with the whole pandemic situation, so audiobooks are my escape. Good job Marnye, Alexa, and Athena
This book was great! I love the characters, although the guys could use a bit more character distinction. I found that once I started, it was hard to stop listening because it is very entertaining and easy to read. The world that the story is set in is also intriguing and I can’t wait to see it develop even more. And I can’t forget to mention all of that deliciously steamy tension. So good!
As for the narrator, she did a great job. She was very easy to understand and listen to. She also does a great job with the characters and bringing them to life. 5/5 stars for her!
I really enjoyed this story! It was a fun one for me. It had a lot of the elements that I really enjoy. Everything was blended together well so it all made sense and worked together. This is part one of the series and I am highly looking forward to the next one. It held my attention the entire time through and I really liked the characters.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Jade went from a modern day Cinderella to a high priestess sex goddess in a matter of moments. She now needs to learn how to control and wield her power and has three mages to watch her. Rocco, Ryker, and Thorn were selfish, cold, and utter assholes that I hope get more developed throughout the series and that their relationship with Jade gains more of a connection than it ended with. I probably liked Asher, her best friend, the best out of all of the characters. I think Darius was my favorite guy out of all of them because he seemed like the only one who willingly wanted to help her. Jade put on a tough face, but I feel like her character could have been stronger and less aggressive. I thought it was funny that her magical weapon, Cleo, was a spork and that it seemed to have a personality of its own. I really enjoyed the interesting world building that James and Phoenix created. This book was filled with drama, steam, and humor that kept me intrigued and wanting to know what happens next.
Marnye did a great job with her narration! She managed to bring Jade’s personality to life- the sass, tantrums, and steam. Her male voices weren’t as great, but it didn’t take away from the overall experience.

I enjoyed this book. Jade grows as a character in this book I hope she makes those boys Grovel a bit more in book 2! I look forward to the next book!
Fantastic Story & Narration An Amazing Fantasy PNR
Term 1: Unleashing Trials
Academy of Sorcery, Book 1
By: Alexa B. James, Athena Phoenix
Narrated by: Marnye Young
This is a fantastic story and start to a fascinating series. This is my first book by Alexa B. James and Athena Phoenix and it will not be my last, I enjoyed their writing style and the imaginative world and characters they created. The storylines are interesting, they grabbed my attention right from the start and captivated it straight to the end. I adored Jade, the the lead female character, she a badass, strong minded and fearless. She is stuck working a job she hates but does it to keep her Father safe. She reached her 18 birthday and all 18 year olds from magical decent must attend an unleashing ceremony at the Academy of Sorcery. The Wizards exam each to see if and what magical power they may hold. Jade was reluctant to attend but asked Silas, her boss but he said no, but then Rocco and Thorn from the Academy came to take her there. Not all were welcoming to her, she did make a couple of friends, Elowen and Asher, but the popular girls hated on her right from the start. The big surprise to all was the results of her unleashing, turns out she holds the powers of a goddess, a sex goddess and her unleashing created havoc to all those in attendance. Rocco, Ryker, Thorn and Professor Darius, head sorcerer, are assigned to watch out for her and teach her. There is a lot of sexual tension between them, she thinks it is because of the power she emanates not because they like her. A lot goes on it this book, it is cleverly plotted and there is never a dull moment. There is plenty of drama, angst, some humor, twists and turns, some thrilling and suspenseful moments and some hot romance. Thank you for this fantastic story, I am looking forward to what comes next for Jade and her harem of men.
I listened to the Audible edition, Marnye Young is a fabulous narrator and voice artist. She brings the characters to life, gives each their own voice and personality. She does an amazing job portraying the characters, humanizing them, capturing their emotions and projecting them into her performance. She
is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the great listen

What a great start to an Academy Series! It is a reverse harem with a bit of taboo!! Oh yeah that is pretty interesting. So Jade receives a letter to attend an unleashing. What is that you ask? Let’s just say that supernatural have their abilities bound and it gets unleashed when the turn eighteen. Well because of what has befallen her growing up she is having a difficult time getting to the unleashing. Then she meets Ryker, Thorn, and Rocco who are very powerful sorcerers. So does Jade have magic or not? If she does, can she be helped? Well it gets very interesting to say the least! There is also the Professor! Ohh he is hot. So what will happen? Why does a beautiful women show up and try and take her away. So much happens throughout the book and the mystery of it all captured me. I cannot wait to read the next book.
