“Above This Grave” is the last book in “The Cloven Pack” Trilogy by D. Fisher and a wonderful conclusion to the series that also offers a glimpse into the future of the story in the Realms. This is the love story of Flint and Irene, but is also so much more, is a story of growth, loss, renewal, sacrifice and the fight for happiness.
Irene Scott is currently in Cloven Pack territory attending their Alpha female during her pregnancy and subsequent delivery, as a skilled Riva Pack midwife shifter, she is intended in Kenna’s well-being, whose pregnancy has not subtle her character in the least, she might be an acquired taste but she is undoubtedly the center of attention more than not. When Irene meets Flint, who is still trapped in his wolf form, something shifters (pun intended!) the former womanized has found his mate, the one and only Irene, and so the struggle begins, a battle for love and redemption, Flint fights with his own wolf to regain his human form while Irene tries to hide her secret, a dark truth that can put everything in jeopardy. This is a highly emotional story, that manages to add a wonderful love story in the mix and conclude the trilogy
A fast-paced, a rollercoaster of emotions, ups and downs, incredible chemistry between a couple that have to fight very hard to attain their deserved HEA, this book has it all carefully written in D. Fisher amazing narrative, captivating from the very beginning, credible, relatable, fascinating, with multifaceted characters that work beautifully with each other as pieces of an incredible satisfying puzzle.
This is a great finale for the series. I started reading this author’s books totally out of order with her newer releases. However the scope of her fiction overlaps with great characters and worlds being shared in more than one series. So if, like me, you are more familiar with her newest fiction, it’s never too late to go back to the beginning and catch up. It isn’t necessary of course but definitely well worth your time!
What a way to end the series! Holy Cow!
From page one, I was hooked. I also discovered that I was so deeply invested in these characters, that I was close to having panic attacks when I thought about what was happening to them. I was still so amped from reading the second book, that it took me a while to suck it up and read the finale. But boy am I glad I did!
If you’ve read book 2, you remember that Flint is stuck in his wolf and can’t get out. He’s trapped with seemingly no way out. At least until he sees Irene. Irene becomes his salvation the moment he realizes that she’s his mate. However, there’s one problem. Irene is hiding a deep, dark secret. Can the two of them get through it? Or will her secrets and lies be the end of them, and him? Guess you just have to read and find out!
Another thing I love about this series is, not only does it have the romance part on lock, but there’s also a massive arcing story line as well. One that finally comes to a head and a conclusion in this book. No I am not going to spoil it, however I will say, I was definitely cheering at the end.
This series was amazing and you can see how the author’s writing had grown over these three books. The ending also leads right into her next series, Rise of the Realms, which is next on my TBR list!
5 out of 5 stars, but I’d give it more if I could!
This book surprised me with a great story. If you’re like me, you’re reading this as a standalone not having read the first two. D. Fischer’s world building and writing is concise, her characters seemed to have a great deal of thought and personality added to them. Then add in the emotional rollercoaster the plot pulls the reader through and it was a terrific read I enjoyed tremendously. Now, I’ll need to backtrack and read the first two books for sure.
