I really enjoyed this story. It was a little different than this authors other books and I absolutely loved it. I like how it was the girl that was fiery, passionate, and strong willed. And that the guy was a bit more shy and reserved. I adored how their romance blossomed. And how sweet they were to each other. There wasn’t too much drama in this one and that was ok. I have a feeling the next book will have so much stuff after the groundwork for the next couple has been laid.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are real, and well-developed. I was drawn into their lives: their emotional fears, love, anger, insecurities, and their too-often rash decisions. The mystery, not truly knowing what had happened behind the scenes, kept me on the edge of my seat. I was constantly apprehensive about what danger lurked in the shadows. The storyline is a good one, with twists in the plot that kept the story moving.
There are a handful of places that need editing, but not so bad as to be a distraction. What I did take issue with was the excessive use of exclamation points. And a few times a sentence ended with a question mark that, to me, didn’t seem to be a question. Another edit would help the book a lot.
Overall, I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a Regency romance. It’s a great read.
This is the first book I have read by Ms. Ella Edon and I was surprised. I had to smile as I read parts of it. As far as the heroine being a “Fiery Lady” I don’t think so. She is too emotional, prone to cry at the drop of a hat and had a hard time expressing herself. But it did take guts to kidnap a peer. There were parts of the story that made no sense. When Emilia kidnapped Luke instead of the Duke, she became terrified, kept him locked up for four days. At first when Luke arrived it was to an empty room. Then magically it transformed into Emilia’s father’s study. When Luke sat at the desk, he found the Earl’s ledger. It revealed the financial distress he faced. I thought for sure that ledger/book would be used in the story somehow to allow Luke to help the Earl get his money from the Duke. The other thing was that Luke lamented about losing his freedom and yet when the opportunity arose to escape, he did not take it. It was like it did not even cross his mind. Duh. And there was more than one opportunity. Strange. Emilia’s father was too absorbed by making money that he became out of touch with his own daughter. Here she was trying to rescue him from financial ruin and he seemed to take a lackadaisical approach to it all. Now I love a good romance and yet Luke and Emilia’s romance I felt was not well developed. Another thing, there was just too much crying. Emilia cried, her father, the Earl cried and even Luke cried. TOO much. The impression I got from the story was that Emilia and her father were living on a limited income. She had no money to spend on ball gowns and the like. Her cousin paid for her masquerade outfit for the ball. So, it was a great surprise that at the end of the story the Earl spent lavishly for a ball. Where did he get the money? The Duke was an odd duck. Arrogant and for some reason had a grudge against Luke and we never find out what that was all about. Emilia’s attitude pretty much throughout the book was “woe is me” or “my reputation if found out is doomed” or “what will happen to my father”? It got tiring to keep reading her thoughts over and over again. Again, there were parts of the story I smiled about as I read. I loved how much Luke and Emilia loved each other. The way the author describes the special moments between them were swoon worthy. I think the ending of the story lead me to believe there might be another book in the works based on Luke’s cousin Hal and his association with Emilia’s cousin Hestony and the mysterious Osburne. Did not get to know too much about him. Anyway, I think the overall intention and theme of the book is good but the execution was not. There is plenty of room for improvement.
There were some parts of this story that were really hard to accept as reasonable especially for the era. Luke never tries to escape? It seemed like Emilia was always crying about something, mostly her father or some situation she got herself into. The ‘bad guy’ is just too much. No one in this book really has much of a backbone although the title would make you think otherwise. This is the second book I have read from this author and while the story concept is interesting the execution is not so much.
