This Scottish regency romance featuring an English lady and a Scottish highlander penned by USA TODAY bestselling and HOLT Medallion winning author Bree Wolf proves that you can fight love, but it’ll be a fight you cannot win.Scotland 1805: On his way to claim his late father’s title, highland chief CONNOR BRUNWOOD, stumbles upon an English lass in a deserted clearing. She’s dressed like a man, … She’s dressed like a man, in shirt and breeches, her blond tresses hidden under a large hat and a foil in her hand, as she practises the art of sword-fighting.
Awed by the sight of her spirited, blue eyes, and graceful, yet alluring movements, Connor calls her bluff, vowing that he will make her his wife.
However, that is easier said than done.
Weary of men and their intentions, HENRIETTA TURNER lives and plays by her own rules alone. So far she’s thwarted every marriage proposal to come her way – though gentlemen aren’t exactly beating down her door. Her scowl and outright manner have sent even the most steadfast of them running for the hills.
Good riddance, for Henrietta is hell-bent on remaining unwed.
However, her plans come to an abrupt halt when a devilishly disarming highlander discovers her secret hideout. Undeterred by her rejection, Connor goes over her head to her uncle and secures her hand in marriage.
Outraged, Henrietta is determined not to bend her head to this savage brute from the north, whose crooked smile and knowing eyes make her pulse race in a most disturbing and highly inconvenient way. Still, the walls she’s built around her heart begin to crumble as she struggles to resist his keen wit and gentle strength.
Sensing her wounded heart, Connor is resolved to break through her defences, and soon Henrietta will find herself swept off her feet by her dangerously attractive husband and the kind heart he offers her in exchange for her own.

A wonderfully well-written story of a young 5-year-old girl who rescues her brother by carrying him carefully downstairs and hiding while her father again beats her mother. This time, however, the mother ends up stabbed to death and her father shot to death. After all noise ceases, she carries her brother out of hiding and finds her dead parents. This experience scars her, leaving her unwilling to trust anyone, and spurs her to learn self defensive fighting with daggers and foils.
20 some years later, she still lives with the uncle that took the children in and her brother is away, somewhere. A chance encounter in the forest with a traveling Scottish clan chief starts a series of events leading to their marriage. As the story progresses, she slowly lets down the walls of suspicion and distrust that she has built. A loving husband and kind mother-in-law play a large role in this endeavor.
The story has a number of storylines running through it: Her husband had been made chief of the clan after the death of his father, and there is still anger and strife about his selection over his cousin. A long feud erupts when a son from one side of the feud marries the daughter of the other side. Jealousy by a woman in the clan that had wanted the chief for herself results in a deadly ambush which threatens to tear the clan apart. These are skillfully woven together to a satisfying conclusion—except for one thread: what happens to the brother? Apparently his story is so complicated that it will be told in the next book.
This is a clean story, no cursing and only kissing between a married couple is described in any detail. I find the writing style more interesting from this author than several others writing historical novels of this period, although there is not much history in this particular book. I am left wanting to go directly to the next book, the brother’s story.
This book gave me thought as to what it must have been like for women back then, who were treated like cattle and had no say about their future. I cannot imagine. The H was very patient and knew what he wanted. He was willing to be patient as he knew the best was yet to come. Enjoyable read!
3. Book 3: Abandoned & Protected: The Marquis’ Tenacious Wife:4 stars
I received a free copy of the clean historical novel Abandoned & Protected: The Marquis’ Tenacious Wife (Love’s Second Chance: Tales of Lords and Ladies, #3) by Bree Wolf, and this review was given freely.
This is the fourth novel in the series. It takes a slightly different slant in that it involves a Scottish clan rather than English Nobility. Abandoned and Protected contains another strong female main character, Harriet, her many struggles with her past and accepting love. Like the last 3 novels, the end of the book contains a cliffhanger. Unlike the last three novels, the epilogue does not complete the story, It was an excerpt or a second cliffhanger that reinforced the potential of Tristan’s death that was hinted at in the end of the main story.
4. Book 4: Betrayed & Blessed: The Viscount’s Shrewd Wife:5 stars
I received a free copy of the clean historical romance Betrayed & Blessed: The Viscount’s Shrewd Wife (Love’s Second Chance: Tales of Lords & Ladies) by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely.
Betrayed & Blessed is a well-written full-length clean Regency Romance that has it all. Tristan and Elisabeth rise above family abuse and treachery to form a happy and loving marriage. Tristan’s Sister Henrietta and her husband Connor’s mad journey, to save Tristan, is continued in the end of this novel. The Dowager/Grandmother is a strong woman who is not afraid to give her opinion and is skilled in subtle manipulation and insults. Hints are given regarding who I think will be the next couple in the series. And of course, the happy ending.
5. Book 5: Deceived & Honoured: The Baron’s Vexing Wife:5 stars
I received a free copy of Deceived & Honoured: The Baron’s Vexing Wife (Love’s Second Chance: Tales of Lords and Ladies, #5) by Bree Wolf, and this review was given freely.
Cunning, subterfuge and well intentions help Derek achieve his goal, the hand of Lady Madeline. The romance of Derek Ainsworth and Lady Madeline flows easily. This clean and sweet romance has a strong theme of doubt of self-worth but a reformed Rogue, a cute three-year-old and loving interfering family, and friends provide both balance and humor.
6. Book 6: Sacrificed and Reclaimed- The Soldier’s Daring Widow:5 stars 5 stars

Separated by the need for adventure, injured at war, and left for dead Edward Dunning returns to England broken in body and mind to find his wife Megan has grown into a strong and independent wife. The majority of this novella expresses the fear, despair, and desires of Megan and Edward both before and during their reunion. This is an emotional romance featuring contemplation of suicide, a child almost falling to her death, and a happy ending expressing joy in the future.
7. Book 7: Destroyed & Restored: The Baron’s Courageous Wife:5 stars
I received a free copy of the clean historical novel Love’s Second Chance Series book #12: Destroyed & Restored: The Baron’s Courageous Wife by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely.
Matthew suffering from regret, insecurity regarding his self-worth, and nightmares after a duel has gone wrong vows to do anything his cousin Tristan requires.
Coincidence and a threat to use Lady Adelaide as collateral at a card game embroils Matthew Baron Whitworth in a marriage of convenience to the woman he has been secretly attracted to. Complexed, interesting, and easy flowing this novel focuses on such topics as legitimacy and birthright vs blood and emotions as the true meaning of family and recovering from abuse. There are some twists and secrets but the end is ultimately heartwarming.
8. Book 8: Despised & Desired: The Marquess’ Passionate Wife also Tales of Damsels and Knights book 1:5 stars
I purchased a copy of the clean historical romance Despised & Desired: The Marquess’ Passionate Wife (Love’s Second Chance book 8/ Tales of Damsels and Knights book 1) by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely
Another excellent story by Bree Wolf. Despised and Desired starts out as the two before with sadness, angst, and intrigue. Somewhere along the way the two main characters, Ellie and Rick .succeed against adversity and form a deep and lasting love, heal the broken hearts of the females of the house, and solve a mystery.

This is a complicated and ironic plot of desire, greed, and revenge with the dark themes of forced contractual arranged marriages, mental illness, abuse, and rape.
Discovering he had been manipulated by his father, thirty-year-old Sebastian CampbellViscount Huntly/ Earl of Weston returns from his tour of the continent to his home of Hartridge Hall when he learns his father has forced his younger sister Victoria into a loveless marriage to the abusive Lord Northfield which spurs Sebastian to taunt his father by marrying “an unsuitable woman of unknown parentage” Lotte Ferris/ Lady Charlotte Frampton, who just happens to be one of Lord Northfild’s past rape victims and long thought dead. Strongly attracted and drawn to Charlotte, Sebastian begins a campaign to earn her trust and love while “Lotte” struggles to keep her identity and traumatic past hidden.
10. Book 9: Condemned and Admired- the Earl’s Cunning Wife also Tales of Damsels and Knights book 3: 5 stars
I received a free copy of the clean historical novel Condemned and Admired- the Earl’s Cunning Wife: Love’s Second Chances book 9/ Tales of Damsels and Knights book 3: by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely.
Violet now 18 loves her family and the life of a Privateer but coincidence, well intentions, irony, and a little subterfuge in the form of a fake marriage to Oliver the Earl of Cullingwood place Violet back in the restricting life of British Nobility and back together with the man she was promised to as a child. This is a well-written romance with a complex plot involving a meeting on the high seas, lots of drama, answered prayers, the true meaning of family, breaking with tradition, and of course true love. This novel contains some violence, expresses the harshness that can be found in the British aristocracy, is suspenseful, action-packed, and ends in a hook.
11. Book 10: Trapped and Liberated- The Privateer’s Bold Beloved also Tales of Damsels and Knights book 4: 5 stars
I received a free copy of the clean historical novella Trapped and Liberated- The Privateer’s Bold Beloved: Love’s Second Chances Book 10/Tales of Damsels and Knights book 4 by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely.
Alexandra and Antoine’s romance is one of escaping the controlling English aristocracy’s habit of selling daughters into marriage for gain and that of finding an everlasting true love when you least expect it. Seamless and smooth flow this is a complete and fulfilling sweet romance. I could feel the emotions between Antoine and his father, Antoine, and Henri and Antoine and Alexandra. This is a well-written sweet romance and an excellent precursor to Condemned and Admired or Violet’s story.
12. Book 11: Oppressed and Empowered: The Viscount’s Capable Wife also Tales of Damsels and Knights book 5:5 stars
I received a free copy of the clean historical novel Oppressed and Empowered: The Viscount’s Capable Wife: Love’s Second Chance Series Book 11/Tales of Damsels and Knights book 5 by Bree Wolf and this review was given freely.
Best if read in series. Contains social conflicts and a cliffhanger.
Evelyn and Lord Richard Ashford’s romance is a sweet historical winter-based novel of opposites both in both personality and belief in a woman’s ability to have a career, an arranged marriage, and that of hidden attraction realized. Suspenseful with some twists, multiple conflicts, an ailing father, a loving mother, an unplanned pregnancy, a well-meaning brother who guards his emotions, and a young woman advocating her right to be a Doctor are just of the few of the things that make this novel interesting while reflecting concerns of the era. Although there is a happy ending for Evelyn and Richard, this novel does end in a cliffhanger.
13. Book 12: Destroyed & Restored: The Baron’s Courageous Wife also Tales of book 6: 5 stars

Traumatized by the death of her parents, Henrietta fears trusting anyone. When she meets a mysterious stranger she fears the connection. Suddenly she’s now his wife. Terrified of being alone among strangers in Scotland, her one hope is her new husband. He will do whatever it takes to bring her out of her isolation and fear. Nightmares of her parents’ death may lead to a murderer. Is her life in danger in Scotland? Not a bad read!
A complex story of two very different families. Scottish families and English families trying to find and keep love. Very touching characters helping each other understand their pasts. A touch of magic helps them, I have already some in this series but it doesn’t matter as each is great as a stand alone book.
I love this entire series… while one book essentially leads to another you can read each one as an individual tale. Henrietta is english and Connor is most definitely a Scot. She has no love for men and no desire to marry. Connor is now head of his clan and makes a bargain for her hand and they go through a lot to actually find each other. It really whet’s your appetite for the rest of the series.
Abandoned and Protected the Marquis’s Tenacious Wife by Bree Wolf is a Regency romance with some adventure thrown in. The story plot line is intriguing, main characters become three dimensional as the plot develops, a horrific event from the past is not quite what it seems, a new place has allies and enemies, and love cannot happen without trust. Altogether this was a satisfying read. Jumping five years into the future with an epilogue was a bit confusing and there is a cliff hanger that leads from this story into another book.
This was a hard book to get through because of all the emotions and because the subject matter was so close to home. Henrietta suffered so much emotional pain due to her blanked out memories of her parents’ death when she was five years old. Her husband Conner was soooo patient with her as she gradually uncovered those memories and he showed her an unlimited amount of unconditional love. Many husbands nowadays could use a lesson from this guy. I would challenge all husbands to read this book if you’re not afraid to. I also would warn those who are interested in reading this that it has a major cliffhanger at the end, however, since I have made a commitment to myself to read all the books in this series, that I am NOT afraid of the cliffhanger. This is an excellent psychological lesson for all.
I love that most of this book is set in Scotland! It was a nice change of scenery. Henrietta and Connor work so well together and I loved their character development! At the start, I thought Henrietta was too prejudiced and Conner was a little full of himself, but as the story went on, you can see that they are much more complex than that. Can’t wait to read more books in the series that are set in Scotland!
This is one of my top favorite books by Bree Wolf. Henrietta comes off as this bitter, cynical woman, who does not want a man controlling her life. She is introduced to us in an earlier book where she becomes estranged from her best friend due to her harsh beliefs about love and marriage. But now we find that there is far more to Henrietta than what first meets the eye. She has traveled a harsh road that has shaped this woman she has become. But at her heart she is a dynamic, feisty woman with untold depths of love and loyalty.
I loved reading this book. I love how Hennerita learned, changed and became the person she was supposed to be. I love how Connor stuck by his wife. It was a great book.
I enjoyed this book.
Ms Bree is one of those authors that never disappoints. Refreshing plots, nice twists and hea who could ask for more..Ahem, Will there be #14?
Abandoned & Protected: The Marquis’ Tenacious Wife is a phenomenal historical romance by Bree Wolf. Ms. Wolf has once again impressed me with her story-telling abilities. Abandoned & Protected is a well-written book furnished with a stellar cast of characters. Five-year-old Henrietta is in the home when her abusive father murders her mother and then himself. Connor is the future Marquis of Rodridge and the new chief of clan Brunwood and meets Henrietta on his way to London to claim his father’s titles. Connor and Henrietta’s story is packed with everything a historical romance should have, drama, action, humor, steamy sex and suspense. I loved this book from cover to cover and look forward to my next book by Bree Wolf. Abandoned & Protected is book 4 of the Love’s Second Chance Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
Just finished “Abandoned and Protected”. If you want an edge of your seat historical romance that is a very beautiful, touching and sad historical romance
with some really goof action scenes but no blatant sex scenes you must read this book, you will need a few keenex! The story line is great and the character buliding
is first rate. Please read and enjoy!!!! Bree has hit a home run with this book. I can’t say enough good things about it. Please keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sincerely, Sue D.
Surprising Finish!
I wasn’t sure that I would like this book as the main character, Henrietta Turner, appeared in an earlier book as sort of an unlikeable, man-hating friend to the heroine. It was a pleasant surprise the more I read this book that I actually starting liking Henrietta and hoped she would find her happily ever after with Connor. Henrietta needed to come to terms with what happened to her mother. Connor was the perfect husband to help her. The story was well thought out. The was some skullduggery involved. Almost a cliffhanger ending but still a most satisfying read.

Abandoned and Protected contains another strong female main character, Harriet, her many struggles with her past and accepting love. Like the last 3 novels, the end of the book contains a cliff hanger. Unlike the last three novels, the epilogue does not complete the story, It was an excerpt or a second cliffhanger which reinforced the potential of Tristan’s death that was hinted at in the end of the main story.
FANTASTIC READ!!!
This is a story that will pull you in and keep your eyes glue, not wanting to miss a single word. You have a feelings that flow from animosity, hurt, angry, fear, fury and jealously runs a close first. With twists and turns, up and downs, its no wonder this is a great read. Bree has a feel for bringing so much detail to life. A well written plot that keeps you guessing. A marvelous job matching the characters personalities.
Good romantic read. Worth the time
OK for a light read
