It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger.
“Wild nights are my glory,” the unearthly stranger told them. “I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me sit down for a moment, and then I’ll be on my way. Speaking of … Speaking of ways, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract.”
A tesseract (in case the reader doesn’t know) is a wrinkle in time. To tell more would rob the reader of the enjoyment of Miss L’Engle’s unusual book. A Wrinkle in Time, winner of the Newbery Medal in 1963, is the story of the adventures in space and time of Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O’Keefe (athlete, student, and one of the most popular boys in high school). They are in search of Meg’s father, a scientist who disappeared while engaged in secret work for the government on the tesseract problem.

Amazing…a classic
I loved this book as a child and I have read it dozens of time since. It’s a wonderful story of knowledge and cognition needing love to be successful!
Loved it when I first read it as a tween, loved sharing it with my son, love it now. Timeless.
I’ve loved this book since I first read it at what, 8,9 yrs old. It holds up over time and the messages about family, love, and trusting yourself are timeless. I highly, highly recommend this to anyone.
I love science fiction and fantasy and this book fills both those categories.
I remember reading this story as a young adult and loving the book and its series. But couldn’t remember the whole story now that I am in my upper 40s. Re-read the story (albeit Disney’s new version of the story) and now wonder what it was that so impressed me when I was young. Its OK, but now is no longer note worthy. So, unsure if it was …
It almost seems silly to write a review of this book, but here goes mine. This book changed my life. It helped me keep believing in magic, even as it gave me a way to understand science and the way science and religion intersect. That was a beautiful thing for a girl growing up in a culture that wanted to dismiss science altogether. I related to …
This is what got me reading fantasy as a young girl. It informed me in ways I am Still discovering! 🙂
I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve read this. I loved the first three books in the series as a child, and even more as an adult. I highly recommend A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door, and A Swiftly Tilting Planet. Many Waters is so different from the first three that it feels like it is not part of the world of the first three books.
Great Escape, creative
Hopefully, you will read and enjoy this book before you see the movie. There is no comparison and, unfortunately, all the things that make this book work, the whimsy, the science and the connection of one to another, were lost in the theatrical rendition. This is a shame as the book is a good read and is fairly accurate scientifically.
This is one of my all time favorite books of childhood! I am frustrated with the movie versions of this story, and the plain, unvarnished story from the author is a delight from the first word throughout the whole series.
Very fun to read, I had a hard time putting it down.
This was not a very good book in my opinion. It was hard to follow and didn’t interest me at all. I wouldn’t recommend this book, though I have friends who really enjoyed it.
An entertaining quick read about Meg, her brother Charles Wallace and her friend Calvin being sent on a mission to save her father. The very interesting Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which bring an amusing aspect to the story. I was very thankful that the author explains what a tesseract is. There were some paragraphs that I had to reread to …
A little confusing but good
It is amazing
A Wrinkle in Time and the ensuing books in this series are not to be missed. They educate and entertain. They encourage the reader to envision a vast universe, and to imagine a myriad of possibilities.
I enjoy just about everything L’Engle writes. I’m not such a fan of the science part of this series but I do love the relationships she gives the characters. So much of what we read shows only the dysfunction of families so I really appreciate the strong, loving relationships she gives her families. Not only the Wallaces in this series but the …
I just love the beginning of this fantastic tale!! The characters in this book stay with you, and you love them : )
