Originally published in 1968, Ursula K. Le Guin’s A Wizard of Earthsea marks the first of the six now beloved Earthsea titles. Ged was the greatest sorcerer in Earthsea, but in his youth he was the reckless Sparrowhawk. In his hunger for power and knowledge, he tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. This is the tumultuous tale of his testing, how he mastered … mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death’s threshold to restore the balance.

The Earthsea series is easily one of my favourites of all time. I read it in my late teens and it was a seminal work for me as I struggled with my own identity and place in the world. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

A Wizard of Earthsea
I’m going to divulge an important fact about myself: I hate magic systems, mainly because it makes things far too easy for the main character if he or she can wield a wand and everything is done.
Earthsea is an exception to that. Sure: Sparrowhawk uses his magic to gain something, but at the same time he learns that there is a price to pay for …
I read it in the 70s and it is still one of my favorite books. Ursula LeGuin’s writing always leaves you with that emotional hit that you can’t quite trace.
This is the book that started it all for me.
If you want an easy to read book filled with depth. A quick read that doesn’t meander or linger, but paints a picture, this may be the fantasy book for you.
This is my favorite book of all time.
Before all the hype about Harry Potter, Ursula Le Guin’s book about a boy wizard was enchanting children and adults for years. Her language is beautiful and her message spiritual and tender. A truly wonderful fantasy book that draws you into a world of magic, danger, love and coming of age that will stay with you forever. If you like fantasy and …
I have read this beautiful book three times. Each time has brought a sense of wonder at how the writer remakes symbols and epic form to create a new story. I went on to read and re-read the series for the same reasons. As an educator, I have used Ursula Le Guin on several occasions to model how disciplined writing fits ‘hand in glove’ to the …
I first read “Wizard of Earthsea” when I was in high school (hundreds of years ago). I thought it was a great story. I decided to give it another go to see how it stands up. The answer is very well. If I could, I would give it 4.5 stars. It is an uncommonly original story. There are no wars and very few soldiers but there is plenty of action. …
One of my favorite series
Boring
The source for many fantasy writers
I found this book plotting and mediocre
One of the best fantasy ever!!!
I love the Earthsea series. Le Guin is a skilled wordcrafter. Wonderful characters and Dragons! She has created the best dragons I have come across. A really great series and some thought-provoking ideas and dialogue. We will miss her talent…
Ged wants to be a Wizard, but must first meet his Shadow. Written as only Ursula K LeGuin can write – lyrical, well-chosen words, beautifully made characters.
Another one of my favorite fantasy novels as a kid. When I reread this as an adult, i was suprised on how quiet the main character was. It was still a thoroughly entertaining book that influences most of my writing.
