He’s running from his past; she’s running from her future. But on a snowy winter night, they find each other and the surprising gift of love.Sir Nicholas has given up on marriage. These days he’s content to captain his friend’s troops and avoid entanglements—until one winter night when he rescues a half-frozen woman from a snowstorm. Her irrepressible spirit and kindness to others reminds him … kindness to others reminds him that all ladies aren’t like his former intended, who wed his brother while Nick was on crusade. But he can’t open his heart to Lady Clare. She’s bound to another, and Nick won’t forfeit his honor. Even if she were free, he has nothing to offer but love, and this lady deserves everything.
Lady Clare’s dying grandfather has arranged her betrothal, but the arrival of the man she’s to wed sends her fleeing into a snowstorm. Injured when her horse stumbles, she’s rescued by a mysterious knight. She recovers at his run-down manor, safe at last—until her betrothed tracks her down just days before Christmas. Trapped at home with the wedding imminent, she longs for the winter knight she’s come to love.
Only a miracle can bring Clare and Nick together. But at Christmas, anything is possible.

This is the first book I’ve read by Barbara Bettis and am so glad to have discovered A Winter Knight. I love historical fiction and Ms Bettis brought the era of knights and ladies alive for me. I enjoyed the plot, and growing romance between Clare and her handsome knight. What a lovely escape this book was into another time and place. I will seek out more of Ms Bettis’ books. Highly recommended!
This is book 2 in knights in destiny series.
This is not my usual genre but I was intrigued and it didn’t disappoint.
It has a strong and independent heroine that I always like to read about.
The writing is descriptive and makes everything stand out.
I was gripped and I am going to read book 1 when I get a chance
Sir Nicholas has lost all faith in women. So when he discovers a lady frozen in the snow, he brings her back to the crumbling manor he calls home. Questions crowd his mind but so does his protectiveness. She almost died in a blizzard without anyone to help. God knows what might have happened to her if he hadn’t gone out in a blizzard looking for her. Before he can question her, three men come looking for her. She’s frightened of Sir Rollo, her fiancée, and when he whisks her back home, Sir Nicholas must choose between love and honor. Even though he has nothing to offer her except his undying love, will she accept him and reject the lifestyle which she is accustomed to as Lady Clare?
A Winter Knight is a fervent medieval romance between a knight and a lady. She’s fleeing an arranged marriage to a man she detests, and Nicholas has nothing to offer her. No estate, no land, only his battered heart. The attraction is instant yet there are many obstacles between them, mainly Sir Rollo and Nicholas’ honor. The characterization in this romance is vibrant and the characters leap off the page. The setting is described so well, I could feel the warmth of the fire and the coolness of the snow as it falls. The plot moves at a quick pace and the twists kept me wondering what would happen next. But it’s the slow-burning romance between Nicholas and Clare which makes this a five-star read. Love conquers all but especially at Christmas.
If you love medieval romance and looking to be swept off your feet, pick up A Winter Knight. It’ll keep you toasty warm throughout the winter night. Highly recommend!
Favorite Character/Quote: Sir Nicholas. What woman doesn’t want a knight to sweep her off her feet and rescue her? He’s an honorable man with a fiery spirit and I fell for him from the moment he scoops Lady Clare out of the snow.
My Rating: 5 stars
This book is a sweet, cozy, romantic, intriguing, and engaging historical romance read!!
This book quickly swept me off my feet and kept me fully entertained through the last page!!
I loved that this book was such a charming love story full of well-developed characters, realistic old English wording, and a compelling story line that flows.
I really enjoyed the main and supporting characters. I really liked Nick and Clare together. They were thoughtful, caring, respectful characters. I liked that Clare was a strong, brave, compassionate, kindhearted lady that refused to marry someone she doesn’t love and would rather risk her life to get away from him. I liked that Nick was stubborn, fierce, protective, admired, and benevolent. I also really enjoyed young Tom and of course, Nick’s horse, Solomon, the one who keeps all his secrets lol.
This book starts right off with Nick rescuing Clare from a snowstorm. He arrives just in time, as she is half-frozen and nearly dead. Nick finds Clare mysterious, especially with what little information she provides as to why she tried traveling in such a storm. Both are quickly smitten with each other and the attraction leaps off the pages. It isn’t long before three men arrive looking to collect Clare and take her back home to marry Sir Rollo. Clare’s dying grandpère arranged the marriage to Sir Rollo, but Clare does not love him. Nick is also running from his past, as his former flame, betrayed him and left him bitter and cynical. But with Clare’s recent arrival he begins to push down those walls he’s built up, and finally find love again.
This book focuses on second chances, duty, honor, integrity, loyalty, love, romance, friendships, and commitments.
This book offered a quick escape with a beautiful Christmas miracle!!
There are some predictable scenes. However, there are still a few very unexpected twists and turns that you won’t see coming!
This book is book two in the Knights of Destiny Book Series. This book can absolutely be read as a standalone, as I had not read book one before reading this book and had no problem keeping up.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and would absolutely recommend it! I think all historical romance readers will like this book too! So, add it to your TBR List and get to reading – you won’t be disappointed!
**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book and have voluntarily provided an honest, and unbiased review in accordance with FTC regulations.**
Clare wanted better for herself and was brave enough to leave. She was strong and determined. Nicholas’ past had him desiring a life alone until he found Clare. I loved how protective he was from the start. The companionship these two shared, as well as the desire, made them a formidable couple. I enjoyed the coming together of everything, and I recommend this story.
I received a copy of this story through Goddess Fish Promotions, and this is my unsolicited review.
When Sir Nicholas is alerted to a stray horse near the keep during a raging snow storm, he rides out to try and find the rider. What he finds is a half-frozen young woman in a snowdrift. He brings her back to the keep and enlists the help of the few residents to try and save her. When she finally wakes, he finds himself drawn to Lady Clare, but there’s a mystery surrounding the young beauty. When her betrothed shows up to claim her, Nicholas is not at the keep. He can’t stop thinking about her, but can he win her hand?
This was an pleasant book although most of the action happens at the end of the story. I’m not a fan of the insta-love trope especially when the couple has only known each other for 2 days. The addition of Father John and the twist he brings about was clever and added much to the story. I enjoyed the secondary characters as well especially young Tom. This was a quick read, but I wished Nicholas and Clare could have explored their feelings more before declaring their love for each other.
There were also a number of typos throughout the manuscript and that knocked another 1/2 star off my rating. I voluntarily read this book and all opinions are my own.
This is just a sweet story of a love that can transform a person. It’s part of a series, but can definitely be read as a standalone (though I would like to go back and read the first book in the series. I’m assuming it’s his friend’s story).
The characters are well drawn for such a short work (less than 150 pages and, if I had had the time I could have easily read it in one sitting). My favorite character, besides Nicholas and Clare, is Tom… what a wonderful character. I would love to see him get his own story..maybe a coming of age tale?
And, what can I say about Nicholas and Clare.. I fell in love with them both. I loved how the title aptly describes not only the season, but also Nicholas himself. His heart was certainly frozen due to being hurt previously.
If you are looking for a sweet romantic tale of two people finding each other, give this one a shot. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more of this author’s works.
This is my second novel by this author and I enjoy how she tells her stories. I fell in love with both the h/H from their first meeting. How the h, without even knowing, thawed the heart of the H. He’d been hurt and doesn’t want to open his heart to that pain again.
The h is loving and caring and doesn’t care for material things. How the h’s grandfather could betrothed her to someone old didn’t make sense. But, in the end he redeemed himself.
The secondary character’s were well rounded too and added to the story, especially young Tom.
This is a clean story, only a few kisses, but still their love and passion came through. There is a nasty villain, a smart twist with a Priest and a story line that kept you reading wondering what was in store next.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, suspense, many twists, HEA and romance. (ljb)
A Winter Knight is the second installment from Barbara Bettis series, Knights of Destiny. Even though it is part of a series, I believe it can be read as a stand alone. I enjoyed this wonderful romance. It was a quick and sweet read. I had no problem staying engaged from start to finish.
I am giving A Winter Knight four and a half stars. I would love to read the previous book from the Knights of Destiny series.
I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.
A very sweet and cute story for two lovers. The story seems to be on the soft and timid side of romance. The characters all appear to be strong characters in their own right. The description and details of the scenes are explained with just enough detail, not to overwhelm the reader. I wish that there was a little bit action within the story as the book scene was set back in medieval times.
I voluntary reviewed this ARC a free gifted copy.
When a noble knight rescues a lady on an extremely cold night, it wasn’t his intention to fall in love. She’s promised to another who sees only the value of her home, not her. When she’s forced to return to her home to marry, the noble knight follows. If only she could marry the noble knight she loves. With a few twists and turns Bettis writes an enchanting love story built on love and faith.
A Winter Knight will keep you captivate from the moment you begin the journey with Sir Nicholas and Lady Clare until the very end! Barbara Bettis has filled this story with a strong plot, with remarkable emotions, unforgettable characters, and great dialogue that bring this together perfectly. Lady Clare flees from her grandfathers arranged her marriage. Fleeing during a snow storm Lady Clare gets thrown from her horse and left for dead. The last thing Sir Nicholas needs is to have to go out in a snow storm looking for a lost rider when he just arrived at a decrepit old manor house his friend Lord Roark asked him to check out, he doesn’t need an unconscious Lady to look after. Nicholas does not want a woman in his life! But as Clare lies there he can’t help being drawn to her. It’s a romance full of emotions, danger, uncertainty, threats, deception, drama, suspense, and fear of rejection, trials and tribulations and while the suspense builds, tensions escalate and all twist and turns abound that makes for one outstanding story!
This is a medieval tale with a damsel in distress and a champion to her rescue — a heart warming love story that so well woven that its suspenseful twists & turns plus several obstacles will keep you totally immersed. Clare and Nick’s story is one you won’t want to miss reading.
The last thing Sir Nicholas wants is to act dishonorably like the man who had taken his betrothed from him. So when he meets Lady Clare, a woman who is already sworn to another, he is torn between honor and love.
A Winter Knight is well-written with interesting characters and a story that has you holding your breath in hopes that Nick and Clare will be able to get the happy ending they both deserve.
this was book 2 and i really enjoyed it! two people running for different reason one running from the past the other from the future. one night brings them together. read to find out what happens.
Loved this medieval romance story. Looking forward to reading this author’s other books.
What an absolutely wonderful and heartwarming story this was to read! I love the way Barbara Bettis writes, her characters instantly come to life and you feel every emotion they feel. I must say, I just loved Tom, the young lad, to bits, what a joyful character:) This story is about honor, love, friendship, faith and so much more.
Clare and Nicholas are two lost souls…..she is being forced to marry a man she detests and he has built a wall around his heart against love. When he saves her during a snowstorm, their lives are forever changed but “honor” gets in the way. There are many twists and turns that keeps you on your toes and just when you think there is no hope….there suddenly is!
Very well written, kept my attention from start to end and this author has fast become a “must read”. I definitely do recommend this book, as well as her others.
If you are in the mood for a fast-paced Medieval adventure, you are in for a treat!
I loved the cover of Barbara Bettis’s new novella titled ‘A WINTER KNIGHT’. Who cannot resist the story of a strong charming Knight rescuing a beautiful Lady? I loved her characters Sir Nicholas de Quency and Lady Clare. A Winter Knight is a beautiful medieval love story worth taking the time to read! Ms. Bettis weaved a story filled with great characters, suspense, and intrigue that will keep you interested until the very last page. I love her style of writing because she is very a descriptive storyteller.
