Magic is no longer a game. It’s real, it’s deadly, it’s inescapable, and it is coming for Sage Cynwrig.Sage Cynwrig knows her way around a pair of twenty-sided dice and has forgotten more spells than you’ll ever know, but when her mother is killed by a weapon of magical destruction, fantasy merges into a bizarre version of reality. Her birthmark morphs into the Tree of Life. Her boss goes full … Tree of Life. Her boss goes full troll; we’re talking warts and all. Don’t even get her started on the playboy vampire who won’t take ‘no’ for an answer. Oh, and Sage is pretty sure the shadows have come alive, and are stalking her in the darkness. Worst. Day. Ever!
Just when she thinks things can’t get any weirder a supernatural pick-up artist, claiming to work for the A.S.S.E.T. agency, tries to kill her.
They’re all after one thing: The Weapon of Magical Destruction. And Sage is the last living link to it.
Combining elements of Agents of SHIELD with The Magicians and Supernatural, the Agents of A.S.S.E.T. book series is a Fantasy Thriller aimed at readers who enjoy a healthy dose of snarky comedy peppered with pop culture Easter eggs.

A fun enjoyable read. I loved the worldbuilding and the setup of this magical society as both part of the human world and separate from it. The characters are relatable and intriguing and I really liked how the main character of Sage is thrust into the world of what is essentially magical law enforcement finding herself in way over her head. No magical empowerments here; she gets her butt kicked on a couple of occasions. It’s also nice that she’s not wholly embracing suddenly being magically related either; she waffles between walking away and finding out more about her heritage.
There were a couple of times I felt annoyed with Sage, though, that she seemed a bit too passive and accepting. It wasn’t unbelievable given the circumstances, but I felt maybe a touch more fear or anger would have been nice mixed in with her reactions.
But overall I had a great time reading it and look forward to the next book in the series.
Solid 3.5 almost 4 star
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book but was happily surprised with how the story unfolded, there is the mystery, intrigue plenty of twists and surprises. There was some great world building what the real world is like including with ASSET and Sages new and old friends some of who aren’t who she thought they were. I look forward to reading more in the series to see what happens next with Sages new life and those around her.

A Weapon of Magical Destruction by Katie Salidas is an amazing start to a new paranormal series. Cool setup for a story; not an original one, but an entertaining one. Sage’s mom has died and Sage’s life is in for a bigger change than she expected, and her unusual tree birthmark seems to be changing. Her mom worked for A.S.S.E.T. as a weapons expert and died on the job, so when A.S.S.E.T. tries to get Sage to work for them, Sage isn’t having it. Unfortunately, she may not have much choice in the matter; it turns out there’s lots that Sage was unaware of, Sage finds herself involved in the world of the paranormal with danger all around. I liked Sage’s quirkiness, but she’s a bit of a whiny damsel; she’s the bumbling sort and is very woe is me. She can be annoying at times, but I like that she stands up for herself. Most characters in this story are on the annoying side, but they are entertaining. I liked that this book has a whole case being solved, so there really isn’t a cliffhanger. This is very, very light on the romance, so that’s disappointing. There’s some prospects, but I’m not loving any of them. Still really enjoyed this read though, and am looking forward to reading the next one! This was a fun read!
A lot of words but very little character development. There was a variety of fantasy characters but it felt more like it was written for kids. I’m glad it was an ARC rather than having to buy it and finding out it was a mistake. Hopefully the series gets more development and characters are more detailed. I’m sure my grandson might like it.
Intense!
Follow along with Sage as she learns who she really is and the powers that come along with it.
She must catch her mother’s killer and recover the WMD.
Can she succeed?
Definitely worth the read!!!
***I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story.***
Having recently read another of the author’s stories (Pretty Little Werewolf – check it out) I was intrigued to see that she had ventured into a slightly different direction with this series. Lately I have been hooked on supernatural urban fantasy, so this one seemed like it might be a good read. I am glad to say that this more than lives up to some of the best that I have read. The main character, Sage, finds out about her mother and we are along for the ride. This is a great beginning and I am looking forward to the next book in the series
**** SPOILER ALERT ****
In “A Weapon Of Magical Destruction: Agents Of A.S.S.E.T #1” Salidas does it again. The author weaves a wild romp of a tale with elements of fantasy, Science Fiction, action, exposition, intrigue, and betrayal while doing a fantastic job of world building and character development.
I quickly devoured this entertaining page turner, and I highly recommend this book. I fell in love with Sage, she’s a Whovian, what’s not to love? I can hardly wait to read the further adventures of Sage and krew.
In the interest of transparency: I was given a review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review.
It is my own honest opinion.
Received as a review copy, this is an honest review. Sage’s life changes in ways she didn’t expect. In the wake of her mother’s death, she finds out the truth of what her job really was. Magical creatures once believed to just a fantasy, haunt Sage’s life. The secrets she finds lead her down a path she didn’t expect. Snarky dialogue and intense action; highly recommended.
Excellent Ride
The is one of those books that will keep you engulfed from the beginning till the end. This story will be filled with secrets and lies and you just never know who to trust. You flip page after page trying to figure out what to believe.
You will fall in love with the suspense in this story as you try to figure out who the bad guys are and who the good guys are.
Until Next Time…. Tabi
If you want a short sweet cozy paranormal tale…this isn’t it. Sage is living in Las Vegas when she learns her Mother has died in an ocean plane crash on business for a security firm. Scratch that, her Mom was a kick-ass agent for a paranormal peace keeping agency. The only person she can trust is her roommate Matt. But, the people who seem to want to kick her ass are always saving it. From Grey the arrogant ‘meat shield’, Zack the gorgeous vampire to Devon the intense martial arts instructor, they all have her back. Still dealing with the grief of her Mother’s death she encounters her Mother’s ‘shell’ as a Darkling who tries to kill her during an attack on ASSETS headquarters. Her pride sets her up a couple of times but Sage becomes part of the team to learn who the inside assassin is. It’s going to be tough waiting for the next book! And, there’s no porn sex, Yeah!
A wonderful book with lots of intrique. The characters are very good.
A well written book that was easy to be drawn into.
A Weapon of Magical Destruction (Agents of A.S.S.E.T. #1), my first read from author Katie Salidas, & it won’t be my last. A well-written work, intro to the Agents of A.S.S.E.T. series. I look forward to the next book in this series, they’re that good. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
Sage is finally learning about herself and magic. Many twists and turns with revelations. Starting an unexpected chapter in her life. Received ARC.
looks to be a promising start to a series worth checking out.
Katie Salidas has written an amazing novel. The characters were interesting and well written. The plot had plenty of mystery and intrigue and the world building was great. I look forward to the next installment.
I received this book in return for a review.
First I love Katie Salidas writing it seems to flow so effortlessly without the vexing misplaced or missing words that I have found with some Indie authors , nicely edited. Her character building is very good as is her world building. What better place on Earth for a magical story to take place and have all the magical characters so effortlessly fit in with their environment than Las Vegas, NV. There is so much that can happen in this type of setting and so much to explore as an agent of A.S.S.E.T. Sage, the main character, is thrown into the world of magic upon her mothers death but is taken under the wing by A.S.S.E.T., her mother’s former employer, that help her understand what is happening. I have loosely described what has taken place. You will have to read the story to find out what happens, magic ensues. You will not be disappointed.
I just loved the book. It has a very original story, with all sorts of familiar stuff, like the tree of life, mythical creatures, and others but all bind in a way different of what you’re accustomed. I adore Sage and her nerdy and sarcastic comebacks! The chemistry between her and the others characters is very detailed and involving. Can’t wait to read next one!
After the death of her mother Sage Cynwrig’s life changes for ever. She is thrown into a world of magic with magical creatures and magical weapons. There are fairies, pixies, vampires among others. Sage can’t believe her eyes.
After her mother’s death Sage learns that her mother kept a lot of secrets from her. She finds out that her mother was a part of this magical world and had magical powers of her own that she has passed down to Sage. Her mother’s death is very hard on Sage and she sees her mother everywhere she looks and in everything she sees her mother’s presence is all around her.
Sage is approached by different individuals telling her all about her mother’s world and explaining to Sage who and what she is and what is expected of her now. The Agents of A.S.S.E.T. want Sage to join them but she doesn’t trust them and is not too keen on joining their little club.
I kind of think that one of Sage’s reasons for not joining the Agents of A.S.S.E.T. is because her mother worked there and that would be one more place she would see her mother everywhere. Sage doesn’t believe in this magic hocus pocus stuff so why would she want to work for them.
When Sage is attacked in a dark alley one night things start to change for her and she starts to see things in a different light and decides that maybe she had been a little to jumpy in not joining up with the Agents of A.S.S.E.T. and that joining them may be the only choice she has if she is to stay alive and find out more about what is going on why people are after her.
A Weapon of Magical Destruction is a very intense and magically enthralling read filled with action and suspense on every page that will pull you end from the beginning and won’t let go until the end. I just loved all the characters especially Matt and the fairies and pixies and the things they were capable of doing to stay hidden from the humans. I can’t wait to find out more about these magical beings and to meet more of them. I also can’t wait to get to more about Sage, Matt, Devon, Grey and maybe even Zack. Yeah I would like to more about the vampires and their lives.
A Weapon of Magical Destruction is a fantastic introduction into the world of Agents of A.S.S.E.T. Series. I would definitely recommend A Weapon of Magical Destruction to all fans of magic.
Sage Cynwrig’s life dramatically changed with the death of her mother in a plane crash. Mark Sorenson, besides being her mother’s boss and the Director of Operations of the Phoenix office of A.S.S.E.T., had been a surrogate father to her. He was always there for her, someone she could lean on when her mother was away on assignment. Maybe not by blood, but in all other ways, he was family and the only reason she came here to A.S.S.E.T. when he asked her to. When Mark had to leave the office for two minutes – which turned into much longer – Sage closed her eyes to ward off the migraine. She saw fireworks in the sky in her dream, but looked down at bloody wounded bodies in the midst of a magical battle. She saw paranormal creatures fighting with strange weapons. A cloaked figure in blue popped up in front of her, judged her worthiness, then held out blue hands forming a ball of light. He threw them at her feet and each exploded, burning the grass to ash as he laughed. The essence of her mother’s spirit poured into her heart. One small white ember of her mother landed on her wrist and a tree branded into her skin, its roots digging into her veins. She heard a faint voice calling her. The battle disappeared, she woke, and Mark was staring at her wrist!
Finding out more of what her mother did sets Sage on a path she did not want to be part of, involved with people she is not sure she should trust. She learns that having the mark of the Tree of Life will draw dark magic to her. When someone tries to kill her, she begins to take things seriously. Real magic is nothing like her gaming adventures! She could die if she doesn’t find allies she can trust and a way to neutralize the weapon of magical destruction before it takes her life.
This was an exciting book with twists and turns happening everywhere. For a young woman whose only experience with magic comes from a game console, this is a major life adjustment! Will she join A.S.S.E.T. and let them teach her the skills she needs to master? Grab your copy of the book and join the magical battle!
