A time when deception leads to truth, and victory comes from surrender… Guard.
She’s convinced her answer lies in the heart of the kingdom, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get there. Even if it means chopping off her raven locks and binding her curvy, petite figure to refashion herself as a scruffy lad to join their ranks.
Knight Roran McShane’s search for new recruits brings him to the far reaches of the kingdom. Only a select few prove worthy, but the pluck and determination of one particularly small but feisty lad moves Roran to do something he has never done before – take on a squire.
The mute lad proves to be resourceful and skilled, even if he is rather odd and shunned by the others. Roran is forced to second-guess his decision when he begins to feel unnaturally protective of the boy.
When his squire’s deception is revealed, he is both relieved and appalled by the knowledge that he is really a she, and far from a child. Honor and ethics require that he sever all ties, but Roran soon learns that is easier said than done. The lass is no sheltered lady, waiting to be rescued and before she’s done, she’ll surprise Roran, the knights-in-training, even the king himself.
For a warrior’s heart knows no bounds.

I didn’t want to put this book down!! It keeps you on the edge of your seat and it’s not predictable. It threw me off several times…and as much as I read that’s a good thing!! I hope there’s another one on the way!
Wonderful story of mistakes, misjudging & love. A orphan girl names Brighid saw two knights of the kingdom coming into her town to round up young recruits. As a girl they would have never taken , as mute boy he had very good skills they would… brighid had to get to Capitol to find out what he necklace meant. Things were going nicely till she was discovered ………..
Great story! I loved how strong a character Brigid was. She played the part of a young man to try and find information about her past. She has lots of adventures and missteps along the way, but makes friends and finds a family. I loved her and Rorans relationship as well. Give it a read! You will not be disappointed.
Very enjoyable story about rags to riches and the journey to enjoying the natural riches.
Fabulous story of knights and royalty!!
Roran is a member of the Kings Elite Guard, building himself up from a penniless street urchin. When he travels to find new members of the guard to train, he takes a scrawny, scruffy lad with lots of heart to be his squire. There is more to his squire than meets the eye. A fabulous story ensues.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. The read knows the “secret” and the anticipation of the reveal is pure entertainment.
**I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book**
I’m not usually into medieval stories, but I always love Abbie Zander’s books. So, I have this book a try. A Warrior’s Heart did not disappoint. It is action packed, yet it incorporates warm fuzzies. You can always expect a happily ever after. You’ve got to love a protective alpha man and a strong female character. That’s exactly what you get in Roran and Brighid. Brighid has her own secrets. It’s fun to Watch Roran figure it out!
I loved this book. Brighid was feisty, brave, and loyal. It was fun to watch Roran try to understand his growing feelings for his squire. The mystery of Brighid’s parentage was predictable, but the the story was entertaining. I hope Sean’s story is next. I was given an arc. This is my honest review. I would definitely recommend this book.
Wonderful, the characters Ronan & Brighid were engaging. From the first page to the last I was captivated with each of the characters. Truly can’t wait to see if there are more to follow??? Sean, and each of the young men as well as Brighid’s (family). Well done.
What a fun story to read! The “connection” between Ronan and his squire was so enjoyable. I loved that Brighid was more than capable of taking care of herself. She was a true warrior! Throw in a little mystery of a missing princess and the story was a great read! Would love to read one about Sean!
Thank you for the privilege of reading this book! Well done
4.75 stars – I would have liked some of the secondary characters to be fleshed out just a bit more, especially Sean and the orphans. And the ‘young woman disguising herself as a lad’ trope is one I typically have a difficult time suspending my disbelief for, but in this instance it works quite well.
This is a sub-genre I overread many years ago and have since avoided, but Avelyn McRae’s medieval romance is refreshing and so enjoyable. It has the feel of a Jude Devereaux romance, one of the best in the historical romance business. Avelyn is the ‘alter ego’ of our beloved Abbie Zanders, so fans know they’ll get some humor, even a bit of snark, mixed in with the well-woven plot and hot love scenes. Her narrative and direct dialog use descriptive phrases of times long ago past, to lend credence to the story’s historical setting.
What I love is how well she portrays the recognition of some undefinable flare of energy described throughout the early chapters. Ronan’s confusion, revulsion, and denial of his growing feelings toward his squire, to the point that he questions his own sanity and salvation, is very intriguing. He even senses the new recruits feel the same. Even his friend Sean recognized that they became more aggressive during their sparing matches when the squire participated. Imagine Ronan’s relief when he discovers his squire is actually a woman, Brighid!
I love the change in the new recruits’ hearts, the willingness to do what they want to do (but I won’t say what it is, since I refuse to give a spoiler here).
Abbie Zanders’ fans will recognize the use of names we have fallen in love with in her Callaghan series. Not the same characters of course. And the character name Aibhilin is pronounced Evelyn or Avelyn. But English speakers may mispronounce the start of the name as ‘Ab’, as in Abbie. I get a kick out of her playing with the names!
I loved this story, how the knights joked around with one another, and the steamy sensual scenes. I really love that all of this author’s males are strong and protective men. I loved how Roran was so protective of Brighid, and she was so strong and smart. I really hope that the author will write more historical romances, maybe give Sean his forever love.
Such a well written book you get a real feel for the area, time, characters and supporting characters. Brighid is feisty young woman on her own trying to find out her past to get to her future. Roran is a seasoned knight and a man with true heart. Really enjoyed the storyline, the surprises, heart, and yes heat. I had not read this author before but definitely will be reading more. I received a free copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a review
This story this book is amazing my very first romances were historical and after a while they became predictable but this book maybe me want to go back and take another shot at the historical romance. Roran is the highest ranking knight in his King army when he is traveling to the outer reach of the kingdom when he comes to a little town where he meets a young boy who doesn’t speak he makes him his squire. Brighid is a young woman looking for answer of her past. She has been disguising herself as a man for sometime and when the high guard comes into town she sees her chance to find out more about herself.
When it came to light that the young squire wasn’t what him seemed Roran finally let his feeling for his squire come out. But when more questions about Brighid birthright came to light Roran that letting her go was the easiest choice . I very much enjoyed this book and look forward to the sequel or another book from this author
Brighid is not your usual heroine and Roran at least at first finds the lad quite distracting. When the “lad” is set upon by other lads, then the truth comes out and Roran is relieved to find the lovely eyes that captured his interest belong to a beautiful young lass instead. Of course, traveling together becomes more interesting at that point and another mystery evolves.
I truly enjoy the interplay between the characters and the story is full of fun. If you like medieval romances, don’t miss this one.
