A CLASSIC FROM THE “NEW YORK TIMES” BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF “ONE SUMMER
”
Back in America after twenty years in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes–and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill … Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.
For a start there’s the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. Despite Katz’s overwhelming desire to find cozy restaurants, he and Bryson eventually settle into their stride, and while on the trail they meet a bizarre assortment of hilarious characters. But “A Walk in the Woods” is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson’s acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America’s last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration, “A Walk in the Woods” has become a modern classic of travel literature.

Readable, but sort of slow.
Pretty good Bryson
laugh out loud, pee your pants funny!
I really enjoyed this story, though at times Katz got on my nerves. Sure glad I wasn’t through hiking with him!!! Much easier to appreciate his eccentricities in the pages, than as a real life companion. A range of reading from laugh out loud to scary/haunting incidents. Life has a wide variety of people, places and experiences, and this book …
If you haven’t read A Walk in the Woods, you are missing a totally entertaining, warm and witty book. I felt like I was on this adventure along with the author. Highly recommended!!!
Great story telling.l could see myself giving the Trail a try if I was in better shape.of course they did it and they weren’t. Bryson knows how to tell a great story.
One of Bryson’s best. A true pilgrimage. I have done the Camino de Santiago and recognized the honesty, pain and humor. Thank you Bill.
One of the funniest books I ever read
Loved it!
This is a non-fiction story of the author’s attempt to walk the Appalachian trail. In 1996 he decided he was going to try this, after hearing about the number of people who complete it each year. He didn’t have much hiking experience, but felt that if he tried, he could complete the over 2000 miles of hiking in 5 months.
He was wrong. He took …
I enjoyed this vicarious walk on the Appalachian Trail.
Bryson’s writing is both erudite and accessible. His use of language to convey images and circumstances seems effortless. His descriptions of his sidekick, Katz, for this adventure make you feel like you have known him yourself. There are a number of interesting, informative passages in this book and just as many laugh out loud observations. After …
In addition to giving you lots of information he writes laugh out loud scenarios. This is a very enjoyable read

I very much enjoyed 4eading this book. Parts were funny, informational, interesting and encourage me to take up hiking as a healthful activity.
I just revisited this book on audio with Rob. We thought it was funny and interesting. Rob and I enjoy hiking. My family is from the Appalachian area in Kentucky, his in Georgia. So we knew this book was a good fit for us. What we didn’t realize was how fun it would be listening to it. We would have listened to it in less days, (we meaning me), …
