A CLASSIC FROM THE “NEW YORK TIMES” BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF “ONE SUMMER
”
Back in America after twenty years in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes–and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill … Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.
For a start there’s the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. Despite Katz’s overwhelming desire to find cozy restaurants, he and Bryson eventually settle into their stride, and while on the trail they meet a bizarre assortment of hilarious characters. But “A Walk in the Woods” is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson’s acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America’s last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration, “A Walk in the Woods” has become a modern classic of travel literature.

I loved this book! The adventures of traveling the Appalachian Trail from end to end would be a great achievement. Bill Bryson makes every day an experience you might or might not want to have. Meeting his college buddy again after a few decades was also hilarious. I will definitely read more of Bill Bryson.
I had to put it down as I was open mouthed guffawing while I was on a plane.
I love Bill Bryson and this is one of his funniest. I howled sometimes. Other times I was really struck by the stories in the stories. He is truly a brilliant writer.
Can’t go wrong with anything from the wonderful Bill Bryson.
Bill Bryson is an absolute MUST read! ALL of his books…
A totally different entertaining adventure story by one of my favorite versatile authors. I absolutely loved it and its quirky characters.
It was not very funny and I got bored with it and quit reading, and I love nature books!
Excellent book. Quick read.
Have met many of these same kind of characters on the trail myself. A great read, especially if you are a hiker!
A absolutely hysterical account of Bill Bryson’s attempt to hike the Appalacian Trail.
I think it’s Bryson’s best book and I laughed out loud at some parts.
Very funny, quite entertaining.
I love this book. I also have the audio version. The book moves along so smoothly that I listen to it when I want to hear a friendly voice. I fell in love with the character, Katz, the bumbling but wonderful friend.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book like all others by Bill Bryson.
A great story – laugh out loud funny!
Light read for anyone into long trail hiking or someone that knows what it is like to get from point A to point B by living out of a backpack.
Read the book. You will want to hike. Skip the movie.
Better than the movie, for sure!
This book is very entertaining. If you saw the movie of the same name, forget it as this is much much better! It is clever and paints a great picture. Made me really appreciate the people who attempt the Appalachian Trail and made me sure I never want to try!
Typically Bill Bryson at his best
Delightful read. I love Bill Bryson’s writing; have read almost every book. Always informative. This was exceptional and personal.
